I can't believe the headlines from the last 2 days; I thought he Milly Dowler story was bad enough but to target the Soham girls as well is beyond contempt. Infact I can't remember a story that has got me so angry in years.

I honestly believe that the entire country should boycott the paper and see their sales achieve 0 on Sunday

Every single news operation, including the BBC, have paid the police for information.

I am 100% certain of that

reelingintheyears · 06/07/2011 23:01

Please don't get me wrong mauricetinkler.

I take no delight in lining Rupert Murdoch's pockets, but i do like the Times.

Suncottage · 06/07/2011 23:02

Am I being cynical here but.......

All the companies that have boycotted advertising in NOW/Sun/Times etc just going to use that as an excuse for cheap advertising in the future?

Nancy66 · 06/07/2011 23:06

they won't be permanent boycots

moonferret · 06/07/2011 23:10

I haven't read the full thread, and this point may have already been made.

It's a shame the whole country didn't follow the lead of the people of Liverpool in boycotting "The Sun" (NoW's "sister" paper) in 1989 when they falsely reported on the Hillsborough Disaster. The NoW needs to be boycotted en masse this time, although I do wonder just how principled the paper's bulk readership will be on this issue. Congratulations to advertisers such as the Halifax and Ford for their withdrawal of advertising.

ChristinedePizan · 06/07/2011 23:18

I think that very much depends on how much their circulation falls nancy. I suspect this is exactly the sort of issue that could turn vast swathes of their readership against them.

ChristinedePizan · 06/07/2011 23:19

Will be interesting to see how this all pans out re circulation figures over the next few weeks

Really!! Or are you just extremely annoyed like the rest of us. What sort of proof do you have?

Sorry if I come across a bit stroppy, but I dislike statements like this without any serious back up.

bbbbob · 06/07/2011 23:28

Ok chav alert Blush I have bought The Sun every day and NOTW every week for years. But after these revelations I will never buy them again.
Disgraceful.

theinet · 06/07/2011 23:31

I love the News of the World, and the stories it prints . It gets under the skin of the rich and powerful, as well as regular members of the public. Everyone is treated alike! Its riveting every Sunday. People are naive if they don't think every paper has done this for years, going through people's bins, hacking, and subterfuge. How do you think they get such good scoops?
The News of the World is the biggest selling English language newspaper in the world - there's a reason for that. The punters buy it, despite knowing what has been going on - it's been in the public domain for years. The PI's work for all papers, using the same methods. Horrid but a fact of life.

Nancy66 · 06/07/2011 23:34

complex - i say that having worked in the industry for 20 years. I know BBC journalists.

I don't have a problem with journalists paying sources for information if it's for the greater good

birdofthenorth · 06/07/2011 23:39

I have stopped watching Sky News watch as an addict is a wrench. Takes real effort to remind myself to press 503 for Beeb instead!

I will give up watching Sky Atlantic once Mildred Pearce has finished Grin

birdofthenorth · 06/07/2011 23:41

bbbbob brilliant, good for you! I really hope fellow readers do the same. Come over to the Mirror, it's great Grin

ivykaty44 · 06/07/2011 23:50

All the newspapers are hacking into peoples lives regardless of whether they are dead or alive, it sadly isn't just one or two newspapers - there is a whole underworld called the dark arts and it is disgusting and they will sell to any newspaper and often sell to various newspapers.

Boycott all the newspapers to make a difference

Just wait until, joy of joys, the Guardian or the Indie turn out to have used phone-hack material in one of their high-minded campaigns.

Iregular verb:

I am an investigative journalist
You work for the NoW
S/he is lowlife.

mauricetinkler · 07/07/2011 08:25

Not sure they will give a shit Andrewofgg unless they turn out to have been hacking phones of dead people. The phone hacking thing has rumbled on for ages and people have hardly taken any notice - until now. This is has given things a very sinister twist.

GrimmaTheNome · 07/07/2011 08:34

Newspapers need to do 'investigative journalism'. There may be occasion when bin-foraging etc is justified - in exposing issues which are in the public interest (e.g. MPs expenses) but this sort of behaviour is not justified to dig up spurious 'scoops' which might generate salacious or morbid interest among some members of the public. If the editors and owners of the media can't understand the ethical difference then they should not be in the business.

NormanTebbit · 07/07/2011 08:43

Most journalists do stuff which is morally suspect. Doorstepping bereaved relatives, attending funerals of strangers, secretly recording people, stealing photos of deceased from their homes etc

And the broadsheets and BBC will be high and mighty but many will have donethis stuff too.

But what angers me is the casual tapping of phones of people caught up in events and going through a horrendous time - it could happen to any of us and my feeling is who the hell do these journalists think they are? You can slam a door in a journalist's face, refuse to talk tomthem if you wish but can't object to something of which you have no knowledge like people listening to your private phone messages.

NormanTebbit · 07/07/2011 08:47

I also think the nature of tabloid news has changed. Tabloids hada proud tradition of breaking stories about real stuff but people seem keen onceleb gossip which means these methods become the means of getting stories. And if the NOTW is doing it, they all are.

"They're all at it." Guaranteed, that is exactly the kind of line Murdoch will be trying to spin out over the coming weeks and months.

ivykaty44 · 07/07/2011 10:06

newspapers don't give a shit about about investigating stories - it is all about one thing and one thing alone - money, sales, how many papers are sold and how cheap the news was to obtain.

There are very few stories in the newspapers, there are maybe 10 main items of news and they are in different formats across each newspaper. We don't actually get any frigging news its just trip most of the time.

William and Kate
phone hacking
Libya
US gay service men
China and death rumors
facebook and skype

not much actual news 10 odd stories each day

Andrewofgg · 07/07/2011 12:21

In principle it is jsut as wrong to hack Murdoch's mobile as Millie Dowler's - anyone disagree?

wildkittydeer · 07/07/2011 12:24

I really hope people, especially women will band together on this one and boycott anything to do with all these papers owned by NI. Ever since Murdoch launched his version of The Scum standards in UK media engaged in a race to the bottom. Imagine, God forbid that any of you were the mother of Milly or Holly or Jessica or any 7/7 victims, soldiers etc, how would you feel if somebody tried to excuse what these louse have done? This is about money, the love of it, the abuse of it and the power of it.
