to think that the entire country should boycott NoW?

I can't believe the headlines from the last 2 days; I thought he Milly Dowler story was bad enough but to target the Soham girls as well is beyond contempt. Infact I can't remember a story that has got me so angry in years.

I honestly believe that the entire country should boycott the paper and see their sales achieve 0 on Sunday

Snuppeline · 06/07/2011 09:54

I didn't know The Times, The Saturday Times and The Sunday Times are all part of the NoW empire. I look forward to my sunday paper all week....... but I too want to make a stand so no more Sunday Times. Which paper should I switch too?

Someone up thread said that advertising is the most important source of income to newspapers but actually advertising follow the readers. If noone reads a newspaper then noone will bother advertising in it either (as noone will see the advert). So boycotts work very well. As do shaming the companies who continue to support the NoW newspapers.

Sirzy · 06/07/2011 09:55

Capricorn - we get the basic package plus sport for just over £40 a month so your figures seem a bit out!

hurricanewyn · 06/07/2011 10:01

I emailed the list of advertisers yesterday that was in the grauniad, asking if they intended to continue using the NOTW now. Only Tesco have replied so far and they seem to be taking the same line as the co op:

Thank you for your email to Philip Clarke, our Chief Executive, to which I have been asked to respond.

I appreciate how concerned you must be over the recent allegations made against the News of The World .

These latest claims will cause huge distress to a family which has suffered enough. However it is now a matter for the police and like everyone, we await the outcome of their investigation.

MarioandLuigi · 06/07/2011 10:03

The Times is a class act Hmm

The NotW is a scum paper that thrives on peoples misery and always has been. I am glad that it is being made obvious to people.

MarioandLuigi · 06/07/2011 10:04

Well Ford have suspended advertising, so I hope it wont be long before others do the same.

capricorn76 · 06/07/2011 10:10

@Sirzy I totalled it up from the Sky website and I recall seeing a boxing match advertised for £15 extra. Maybe the charges have gone up for new customers? My hairdresser is defo paying £115 though.

Thats why Murdoch is gunning for the BBC, he wants a situation where we're all forced to pay ridic sums to watch tv (where people pay to be advertised to) from a company that doesn't even create its own orginal material oh sorry I made a mistake I think they did part create 'Hottet than my Mother' a modern tv masterpiece!

MarioandLuigi · 06/07/2011 10:13

We have sky and we pay £40 a month and that includes the sports channels. We dont get ESPN though, which is extra and we dont get movies.

mauricetinkler · 06/07/2011 10:16

Capricorn - I pay 55 quid for full sky package (minus Hd) plus sports. I gather this is going rate if you like sport.
On the SkySports thing, when Sky bid for footy 20 years or so ago, nobody else was interested in it as the game was on its knees thanks to hooliganism. Sky have made it the popular product it is. Worth remembering that.
Snuppeline - I switch between Times and Observer. Former centre right, latter centre left politically. Both best on market by a long way.

Sirzy · 06/07/2011 10:16

Just looked on the website and it says £31.75 for the basic package with sports. www.sky.com/shop/bundles-offers/tv/

Anyway that's off at a tangent but I don't see why anyone would pay the figures you are quoting unless they are mad!

mauricetinkler · 06/07/2011 10:21

It's called having a captive audience Sirzy. Sport is the key as Sky has all the best events on an exclusive basis. The rest of the channels you can get on a like for like basis on free to air.

Sirzy · 06/07/2011 10:23

But you don't have to pay anywhere near the £115 a month Capricorn quoted if you want to get that though which was the point I was making, you can get that for £40 a month or £50 if you want hd.

mauricetinkler · 06/07/2011 10:26

Capricorn's figures are wrong. She may have been factoring in broadband, phone etc. In terms of tv viewing alone, 50 quid a month will get you all channels plus movies and sport.

LtEveDallas · 06/07/2011 10:34

Sirzy, £115 a month will be with Broadband and telephone. We are on £65 a month with Sky 4 pack, Lowest Broadband and phone (and no Sports pack)

CurlyBoy · 06/07/2011 10:51

I don't read it anyway, just don't ask me to boycott Sky!

Aitcherella · 06/07/2011 10:53

YANBU, the whole group needs to be boycotted. It's an absolute disgrace. I already boycott due to the groups reporting on the Hillsborough tragedy.

capricorn76 · 06/07/2011 11:04

From their website - 'Our prices and packaging will be changing from 1 September. '

Insomnia11 · 06/07/2011 11:04

What I can't believe is that lots of people are just waking up to the fact that a lot of newspapers are no more than lies and hate-filled rags. Some are worse than others, but you don't think it's just the NOTW that do this sort of thing do you?

I have rarely bought any newspaper in my life - I actually harboured some thoughts about becoming a journalist until I did media studies as part of an ALevel.

It's rather depressing that many people are just waking up to the fact that you have to read between the lines.

Insomnia11 · 06/07/2011 11:06

We have Freesat - fewer channels, no sports or movies but also no subscription, and ours is BBC HD, so nothing to do with Murdoch either.

capricorn76 · 06/07/2011 11:13

Sky TV Subscription: Basic packages £19.50-£52 per month (pm). Sky Movies Box Office costs extra.
Sky 3D: 3D TV and Sky World HD subscription required. Sky World HD means 6 Entertainment Packs, Sky Sports Pack, Sky Movies Pack and the HD Pack (£62.25 a month). PPV means this programme will incur a charge.
ESPN: £9 extra pm if you are a Sky Sports Pack customer, otherwise £12 extra pm
Sky Multiroom: £10.25 pm. Provides the same Sky TV channels as your main Sky TV subscription on a box in another room.
Remote Record: Recording requests must be made at least 30 minutes before start of programme. Confirmation costs 25p.
Sky Anytime+: ~ *Up to 20Mb broadband required. Wired standard set-up £40 or free for new Sky+HD customers (not available for new Sky+HD customers choosing Sky+HD self set-up) with Everyday Lite or Broadband Unlimited. Wireless self set-up £60 per box.
Sky Movies Box Office: Pay per view charges apply
Movies Pack - £16 extra per month
Sports Pack (4 sports channels) - £20.25 extra per month
Major Sports Events - PPV.

I copied and pasted this (edited it though) from the Sky website. This does not include broadband/phones. Sounds for expensive for tv.

mauricetinkler · 06/07/2011 11:16

Insomnia11 - I think most people know that the newspaper industry has some less than savoury practices going on. But hacking the phones of the dead - that is something different entirely.

IntergalacticHussy · 06/07/2011 11:21

There's no point boycotting the NoW unless you're going to boycott The Sun too.

stretch · 06/07/2011 11:33

We pay £110 per month for Virgin, tv, broadband and phone.

We have XL package, sports and movies (not from today though) fast broadband, virgin+HD box, extra box upstairs, and free landline calls.

donnie · 06/07/2011 11:34

Murdoch is one of the world's biggest tax dodgers.

News Intl pays bent coppers for information.

News Int has interfered with criminal investigations.

News Intl is happy to fuck over the parents of murdered children for sales.

News Intl is happy to cause court cases to collapse because they print stories which are in contempt of court. This means that criminals could easily walk free from court.

I could go on; but just ask yourself at this juncture: am I happy to keep paying people to do this? do I want to support, encourage and pay for these people to carry on doing this? Does this square with my conscience?

If the answer is 'No' then VOTE WITH YOUR FEET and withdraw ALL your financial support for News Intl RIGHT NOW.

And sign the BskyB petition RIGHT NOW.

oohjarWhatsit · 06/07/2011 11:34

we have virgin too, been pleased with it for about 10 years now

oohjarWhatsit · 06/07/2011 11:36

i have not spent money on a newspaper for years and years, except the local evening one

its either all doom and gloom, woe is me, or who has been sucking someone else's whatsits. I think i can live without knowing all that
