to think that the entire country should boycott NoW?

I can't believe the headlines from the last 2 days; I thought he Milly Dowler story was bad enough but to target the Soham girls as well is beyond contempt. Infact I can't remember a story that has got me so angry in years.

I honestly believe that the entire country should boycott the paper and see their sales achieve 0 on Sunday

Yes, babybarrister, the NoW would love this story to turn into a 'they were all at it' kind of thing. That would muddy the waters nicely.
I think a clear distinction needs to be drawn from the start between using shady investigative journalism tactics - which have been going on since the dawn of time - and tapping the phones of the dead.

I think the Daily Mail is being quite shy about this story. It's quite far back in the paper today and usually they would jump at a chance to give a good kicking to a media rival.

It is disgusting and I would like to see those involved punished and brought to account. But I also think that a boycott will have a knock on effect on the hundreds of ordinary staff and their families who work for the paper who had nothing to do with this decision and who will suffer as a result if the paper goes out of business, while Rebekah Brooks will presumably have piles of money to fall back on. I don't know what the right thing is here tbh.

lionheart · 06/07/2011 13:04

I thought that too NT. Something of their own to hide perhaps?

wannaBe · 06/07/2011 13:18

I have no idea why anyone pays money for this shite anyway.

But I do also think it needs to be accepted that there were more than just journalists involved - they must have got the numbers from somewhere.

I am also slightly baffled as to how it is seemingly so easy to hack into someone's voicemail?

CurrySpice · 06/07/2011 13:20

While it's hardly a surprise that the NOTW morals are, to say the least, iffy, this really does take the Biscuit

But the NOTW won't go out of business nomorehotbaths, Rupert Murdoch (sp?) wouldn't allow that

Funtimewincies · 06/07/2011 13:37

Can't wait for the next Private Eye! Rebekah Wade's Brooke's antic are old news I'm afraid and I'm sure that they'll be gloating magnanamous in their coverage Grin.

Funtimewincies · 06/07/2011 13:37

antics - sorry, can't preview posts at the moment Hmm.

You sure about that CurrySpice? In a fast growing market, the paper might be able to ride this out. But in a declining market like newspapers, I suspect something like this might be too much to withstand.

Carminagetsprimal · 06/07/2011 14:18

Yanbu - I've never bought the paper in my life but would urge anyone who does to STOP!

Those journos are disgusting.

CurrySpice · 06/07/2011 14:18

I am pretty sure Maurice. RM would rather eat his own head than let the NOTW go down over this. He'll dig his heels in.

IMHO of course :o

BelleDameSansMerci · 06/07/2011 14:19

I think Curry is right... Unless he comes out in full condemnation blah, blah, blah.

mauricetinkler · 06/07/2011 14:25

Murdoch has gone off the boil. He let his firm by myspace ffs! From a PR/social media point of view (much of the former now conducted via the latter) I dont think he and his people will be able to handle the fall out from this.

Glitterknickaz · 06/07/2011 14:35

I'll happily boycott every single News International product except Sky.
This only because we cannot get any signal via aerial, even digital aerial (which is ridiculous we're not in the middle of nowhere), there's no Virgin or BT cable to where we live.... Freesat depends on an aerial.

Sky is our only option to get any tv, and when DS2 is having a bad day that's a godsend.

GrimmaTheNome · 06/07/2011 15:30

Freesat depends on an aerial.

Confused I thought it was - as the name implies - a satellite service?

oohjarWhatsit · 06/07/2011 15:32

apparently very few people change the default pin number on their voicemails, so yes very easy

Shoesytwoesy · 06/07/2011 15:54

yanbu
I would boycott it if I read it, and we don't have sky.
easy to just stop buying a paper and hope everyone who "reads" it does.

GrimmaTheNome · 06/07/2011 15:58

and even those who do, there are a few very popular choices. Numeric code for 'love' apparently is one such. Anyone prepared to work through a couple of dozen common codes would have a fair chance of hitting lucky. (don't know if there's a retry limit on phones)

Glitterknickaz · 06/07/2011 16:10

Grimma - sorry it's freeview, that's a digital aerial required for that.
I have just seen that actually I can get freesat using a sky dish.... which is good news for me.

EightiesChick · 06/07/2011 16:42

I'm partly saying this because I enjoy having Sky Blush and I actually do watch a lot of the channels - but I feel comfortable with focusing on a boycott of paper(s) only at the moment. It will be much easier to gather and sustain support for something more targeted. While I don't like Murdoch's ambitions for expanding his empire, it would be an impressive show of consumer power in itself to take the NOTW down a peg and relates directly to the matter at hand.

LittleOneMum · 06/07/2011 16:47

and the Times and the Sunday Times and the Sun please. Same people.
