to think that the entire country should boycott NoW?

I can't believe the headlines from the last 2 days; I thought he Milly Dowler story was bad enough but to target the Soham girls as well is beyond contempt. Infact I can't remember a story that has got me so angry in years.

I honestly believe that the entire country should boycott the paper and see their sales achieve 0 on Sunday

Someone asked how The Times was reporting it (that's actually the Guardian because you can't link the Times)

"James Harding, the editor of the News of the World's News International stablemate the Times, also publicly condemned the behaviour, telling an audience of advertising executives that if "it [the Dowler allegation] is true, it seems to me what has happened is disgusting and indefensible and for us as journalists it is profoundly depressing".

Harding added: "My concern is, the shame is not just on the people involved, not just on that particular newspaper, but journalists in general.""

TrillianAstra · 06/07/2011 08:52

If you try to hide NotW inside the Sunday Times then you lose the point of a tabloid, which is that it's easier to HOLD the bloody thing.

mauricetinkler · 06/07/2011 08:56

It would be a shame if the Times got tarred with the same brush here. They are completely separate business entities, after all and the Times is a class act IMO.

I don't buy thr NOTW or any murdoch papers. But as from yesterday I stopped watching Sky news on freeview.

Will be sending stern e-mails to companies I use who advertise in the NOTW.

Of course they all knew about it, journos, execs, police and probably politicians.

Sirzy · 06/07/2011 09:04

I don't see how you can claim the police and politicians knew all about it?

Jajas - I have some faith in humanity. I am sure lines are crossed in investigative journalism. But the latest revelations - ie hacking phones of murder victims - are a different thing entirely. I can't believe more than a handful of very dodgy people would be prepared to get involved in anyway in such henious acts.

GrimmaTheNome · 06/07/2011 09:09

Thanks Trill.

Hassled · 06/07/2011 09:13

It's Rebekah Wade's attitude that really really hacks me off - that bollocks statement about her shock and horror. She was the pissing editor at the time - if she didn't know, she should have known. When her hacks came to her with stories re how someone was impersonating Millie and had given her mobile number to a job agency, who "left a message on a voicemail" did it not occur to Wade to ask how they knew that? She's either lying or incompetent.

Sewmuchtodo · 06/07/2011 09:14

Boycott all News Corp International papers and take a stand!

news of the world
sun
the times
the sunday times

ShirleyKnot · 06/07/2011 09:15

Trills - when I was a papergirl (when dinosaurs roamed free) I had to deliver to a veh posh road - they all took a "big paper" and a tabloid and I had to make sure I inserted the tabloid into the broadsheet before I posted it through the doors.

Freaks

livetolaugh · 06/07/2011 09:16

I wont be buying NOTW again but haven't for many years but I will still be watching Sky. The alternatives to Sky are rubbish. Anyway, don't think for one second it's just Murdoch doing all these things. The other just haven't been caught

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 06/07/2011 09:21

Piers Morgam got sacked for faking a photograpgh when he was editor of NoW (I think!(. The current editor should be sacked after getting on his/her knees and begging for forgiveness.

Never buy this paper anyway.

capricorn76 · 06/07/2011 09:25

Cancel your Sky subscriptions. If enough people will do it, Sky won't be able to afford to pay ridiculous sums for sports and then football and cricket will be back on free to air tv (same with US programmes such as True Blood) and the footballers will be paid realistic wages.

Why people will pay a grand a year to flick through 300 channels (as there are only about 2 half decent channels that don't actually produce programmes, just buy them from other companies) is a mystery to me.

saidthespiderwithahorridsmile · 06/07/2011 09:29

the kind of meat-headed mouth-breather who buys NoW isn't going to understand or care about the reasons for boycotting it

Sirzy · 06/07/2011 09:29

Completely of tangent - but Capricorn I can only assume you don't realise how many sports clubs rely on money from sky to survive

capricorn76 · 06/07/2011 09:40

@Sirzy. How did clubs survive before Sky? People will still play sport no matter how much money there is and most of the money goes to the Premiership and supports wages of up to £200k a week. It's Sky subcribers who allow tits like Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs to act like total overprivilaged wankers.

Sirzy · 06/07/2011 09:44

The sports have changed a lot though and couldn't go back because financially now they need the money. I don't follow football but from my understanding the majority of the money comes from very rich investors so i doubt losing sky would have much impact on them but for smaller sports it would mark the end of a lot of clubs - I follow
Rugby league and I am all to aware how the clubs need the money they get from sky to survive and compete.

We didn't miss anything when we stopped sky subscription a few years ago - we'd got it before freeview existed, mainly for kids programs.

There's so much good internet content available now too.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 06/07/2011 09:52

I never buy or read papers. When did pure facts leaching out to be replaced by 'opinion'? Makes me mad. The NoW should be heavily penalised so that it really 'hurts', but it won't be. This country's love of scandal-rags is a joke. Angry

capricorn76 · 06/07/2011 09:52

@jajas. Yes it's about £60 a month for the basic package but if you want stuff like HD and ESPN etc its another £20. Then you have to pay extra for 'half-decent Box Office' movies, extra for major sports events at around £15 a time. If you have the broadband pacakge and go over your allowance, the fees you pay are astronomical. I found out about this as my hairdresser was complaining that Sky was costing her £115 a month as she'd gove a bit over her broadband limit, Sky handn't told her and had increased her Direct Debt for the last 3 months (she said she needs Sky because her kids want the kids tv channels. All this to basically watch tv!
