To find most blogs oh so bloggy boring...

....and furthermore, to find the term 'mummy blogger' excruciating? Genuinely wondering if it's just me.

OP posts:
JJ · 02/07/2011 14:12

The one BoF mentioned : 27bslash6.com It is very funny. As is hyperbole and a half, although she's not writing as much, sob.

I like mnftiu.cc which is the guy that did Get Your War On and who has the Artisanal Pencil Sharpening company -www.artisanalpencilsharpening.com/, daringfireball.net and boingboing.com. The one I would choose if I had to pick only one is kottke.org.

The only mummy(ish) blogger I read is belgianwaffling.com -- I love the way she writes as much as anything else. The only person to mention sodding cybermummy in my twitter timeline or on the blogs I read was someone who doesn't even have a blog!

Disclaimer: the whole reason I wrote this post was to mention Belgian Waffling which you should read if you haven't. Smile

MmeLindor. · 02/07/2011 14:33

Worriermum
You can start a blog - blogger is good for beginners - or wordpress then apply to join the blogger network. If I were you, I would set up a blog email address that does nit have your RL name on it. Yahoo or gmail. That way you can post without revealing who you are.

I think that MNHQ have said they won't link blogs to user names - check on the blogger network thread for that.

JJ
Agree with you on Belgian Waffling. Great blog.

worriermum · 02/07/2011 16:14

Thanks MmeLindor - very useful advice. And may I say that this thread has introduced me to your blog, which I am enjoying. I'm just off to set up [email protected] and then I'll post on your blog.

DirtyMartini · 02/07/2011 16:21

Yes, they have said that, worriermum - they know a lot of people are concerned about privacy, as are you.

Can I recommend WordPress? I dithered about whether to go with it or with Blogger and I've never regretted choosing WP. Support is good, and I've never yet suffered from the technical hitches that appear to plague Blogger on a semi-regular basis.

overmydeadbody · 02/07/2011 17:44

The great thing about blogs is that you only have to look at/read the ones you like and find interesting.

I wouldn't waste my time reading a blog about a person's life as a parent, it would bore me to death, but I can waste hours blog surfing through blogs about sewing and decorating. I don't read the content so much as browse the photos for inspiration.

If it wasn't for all the tutorials and instructions about sewing that other people blog about I would have to actually buy sewing patterns, which I don't want to do. So I love the fact that we have blogs.

Don't read ones you don't want to read. Simple.

moominthecorner · 02/07/2011 18:08

Have to agree that Belgian Waffling is beyond good. Her linked blog Goop is ace too. When DS2 was in SCBU I read everything she wrote, it saved my sanity.

nannynick · 02/07/2011 18:12

Blogging could be seen as being similar to a mumsnet talk thread where no one responds to the OP. Though actually on some blogs people do post comments.

A really boring blog will be really boring to some people, whilst it may actually be of interest to others. Blogs tend to be about a specific subject, rather than random ramblings though I'm sure some exist which are purely full of random thoughts.

MintyB · 02/07/2011 19:58

I blog. I guess I wouldn't have subscribers if people didn't like it! There's room for all - give people a break?

carocaro · 02/07/2011 20:52

Don't even have the time or the energy to look for the good one's let alone read them!

worriermum · 02/07/2011 21:55

Thanks for that clarification Martini. So, to clarify (sorry, some of us here are slow learners): I go to Word Press, I choose a template, graphic and blogger name and then, once I am up and running, I apply to be part of the MN bloggers network ? Yes ?

And then presumably, I post on MN on my regular name about what a great blog mine is, and how much I recommend it :) ?

MmeLindor. · 02/07/2011 23:09

Worrier
If you would prefer to keep the blog separate from your normal MN name, you can do that I think. Have a namechange for blogger network posts. I could not do that, as I would forget to namechange back.

moominthecorner · 03/07/2011 14:54

Depends on whether you want the traffic from mumsnet contributors. Tbh some people have been so crushing I'm pretty sure I won't get any. I see nothing wrong with monoblogs about daily life. I like seeing how people tick and like minutiae. But that's just me.

DoraJarr · 03/07/2011 14:57

they so are dull - apart form mine which caused a rl local ruccus Wink
all " ooh mr comedy name has mown the lawn"
or " here is a cake from this book"

just shite

Cadmum · 03/07/2011 15:11

I love some home-education blogs and some doula ones. I will admit to preferring to live my own life rather than reading about other people's...

Like threads on MN, if you don't enjoy them, then don't read them?

moominthecorner · 03/07/2011 17:02

You can't equate a blog with writing, say, a book. Just because I blog doesn't mean I have any ambitions or false belief in my writing abilities. I blog to keep a diary of the things I like, feel and enjoy. Quite frankly the majority of my existence is boring and banal (laundry anyone?) but it's my choice if I want to write about it. And it's the visitor's choice to read or to pass by. Why be so judgemental? there's no need. And of course, in a few hundred years' time domestic blogs will be held up to be shiny examples of social history records. And I will be smiling in my Cath Kidston lined grave. With a piece of cake.

DoraJarr · 03/07/2011 17:05

i think a lot of blog posts are just TOO LONG
the edit of a book /newspaper renders them far more readable

pigletmania · 03/07/2011 17:09

There are some very interesting blogs. My dd has possible ASD, social communication difficulties, and I have been on the special needs forum on here, where there is a MN dad, who writes a blog about his son who has ASD. I find it comforting to read, and that I am not the only one going through this. Some blogs are very useful, others dull and boring.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 04/07/2011 00:32

I have just been giggling hysterically for about two hours, thanks everyone for these great links. Bloggess is fabulous, so is the slashB bloke and ShirleyKnot's blog too.

I have been thinking about starting one myself, and I keep havering about it.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 04/07/2011 00:36

Oh and nearly forgot, my two favourite blogs are this one though she hasn't written much for a while and this one. They are both written by mates of mine so it's possible that I only find them funny because I know the creators.

ScatCatShoo · 04/07/2011 04:18

Just don't read the blog if you find it boring. Seriously.

I do have a blog, and its a food one. I enjoy it as I get to share traditional recipes with people from all over. I ocasionally post stuff about my li'l girl and some more stuff about having moved to a different country. But I am not shoving it down anyone's throat, and the people who read it read because they find stuff they like in it. If its not to their taste, they stop reading.

FWIW, I hate the term 'mummyblogger'. I see someone has already linked to MmeLindor's rant on it, which is exactly how I feel. I mean - if a father blogs on a computer blog is he called a 'daddyblogger'? Nah, just a blogger. Similarly I prefer food blogger to anything else.

Piggles · 04/07/2011 06:04

YANBU - mummyblogger is a truly boaktastic piece of terminology.

I also agree that there are some blogs which are crashingly boring and yet so very smug and self-satisfied you want to reach into the computer and strangle the author. But if I find one of those I exercise my right to hit the back button and never return to that page. Not all magazines and books are enjoyable either - so why should I expect all blogs to be?

I blog - but not with hopes of a huge readership and gushing yes-men commenters stroking my virtual ego.

I blog because I'm an English girl living in the US and updating a blog on a daily basis is easier than individually emailing or phoning all my family and friends back in Europe [lazy] but still lets them all know that I'm still alive and happy if they care to look.

My blog is total random stuff (ideas, recipes, photos, anecdotes, weather reports, the latest mayhem my evil bastard cats have caused etc) I don't delude myself that anyone but people who love me would give a rats ass about anything I write.

Yes, I suppose my blog is probably quite boring - but it fulfils it's purpose.

There are all kinds of blogs out there, some meant only for the blogger and some just for their immediate circle of friends/family. Some aspire to wider audiences. A fair number of all types of blog are well worth perusing - if they are about something or somebody you are interested in of course.

But yes, there are a fair whack of bloggers out there who think they're something really rather special, that they have outstanding writing skills and the ability to be funny, moving, inspiring... but without a publisher to tell them they're deluded and to not inflict their garbage on unsuspecting denizens of the internet, you just have to avoid them as best you can.

butterflyexperience · 04/07/2011 09:30
