To wonder if muslims judge non-muslim women who do not cover their heads?

Obviously I only mean muslims who cover their head themselves, I realise some muslims do not agree with the practice.

I am curious to know whether as a non-muslim woman who doens't cover her head I would be judged?

Just one thing Riven, I have quite a lot of exposure to ultra orthodox women, and have spent time in Jerusalem, I have never once seen an observatn Jewish woman wearing a hijab or anything of the like. It is totally against Judaism to obscure your face.

Correct - many women do cover their hair (the extent depends on their community, their own beliefs, etc. etc.) and normally it is either a scarf or a sheitl (wig). You also wear modest, female clothing, so skirts that go below the knees and a top that doesn't show your cleavage, sleeves down to elbows etc. Broadly speaking, in the ultra-orthodox (haredi) communities, women will also always wear tights and their tops will cover their collarbones.

AbsDuCroissant · 22/06/2011 13:07

The only time a women would wear a veil is on her wedding day. That's it.

Riveninside · 22/06/2011 13:09

There was an article in an israwli newspaper about it Abs. The Israeli Govt are not happy.

And your opinion about veils is just that. Yours. Leave people alone to wear what they damn well like.

fuzzywuzzy · 22/06/2011 13:10

I've read about a sect of Jewish women who feel veiling is a religious requirement.

here

Makes for interesting reading, another religions perspective on the matter.

AbsDuCroissant · 22/06/2011 13:11

No, Riven - the thing on not covering your face is very clear in Judaism; your face is supposed to be the area of your soul, and their might be very very few women, but they would be in a tiny minority. In my experience of the ultra orthodox communities in Stamford Hill, NYC, California etc. etc. is that women wear sheitls. I meant in JUDAISM they only time a woman would wear a veil is on their wedding day

AbsDuCroissant · 22/06/2011 13:12

Not area of your soul, like an expression of your soul.

nailak · 22/06/2011 13:15

yes but in order to understand it you need to atleast have a very ood understandin ofclassical Arabic, and the stylistic tools in the Quran, and the circumstances of the revelation, who the verse is referrin to etc and you need a scholae to teach you that?

you need to interpret with understandin and knowlede and not your nafs

knittedbreast · 22/06/2011 13:19

is that where eyes being windows to your soul comes from then?

AbsDuCroissant · 22/06/2011 13:21

I like to think so Grin

I can't really remember, but I went to a talk where there was this whole long thing about Hannukah and the clash of Jewish and Hellenic culture; the Greek word for face referring to just the surface appearance, whereas the Hebrew word is Pan (plural panim), and is connected to another word (I can't remember what). But the basic premise is that in traditional Judaism, your face and the character of your face is deeply connected to your inner being, so you should not obscure it.

interesting article.

I know nothing about this subject but I am fascinated with the scarves that the youg girls wear at uni. They always look so neat, and they have this high up bump bit and I always wonder how they do their hair underneath. What is that type of head covering called? I want to check on youtube how to do it. Grin

Riveninside · 22/06/2011 13:23

here

They feel its a requirement. Long as it doesnt hurt anyone and they make a choice then why does it matter.

Personally i think hiding your eyes is more concealing than hiding the mouth or nose. With sunglasses people cannot see your eyes and expression.

So you probably did see tnem Abs, and assu ed they were muslim.

Riveninside · 22/06/2011 13:26

The high bump looks a bit odd i reckon but eachto their own. You put your hair in a ponytail with the loose end in the bunch too. Young girls often add a massive scrunchie thing so when the scarf is on it makes a huge bump which looks like masses of hair!
I just ponytail - my hair is mid bavk length - and tuck the end of the tail up inside he bonnet cap i wear under my scarf. Otherwise tendrils drift out like escaping spiders and irritate.

nailak · 22/06/2011 13:30

never heard the camel hump hadith?

Riveninside · 22/06/2011 13:35

I have indeed

nailak · 22/06/2011 14:04

just checkin, Smile

GothAnneGeddes · 22/06/2011 14:40

I never realise how many other Muslim MNers there are until these threads and I'm sure lots of other people don't either. Smile

I wear hijab, but I don't judge anyone for not wearing it either. Only God knows the whole truth about people and all that.

Further to the earlier debate. I take my ruling from the Sunnah on hijab and there is a strong hadith stating that only the hands and face should be seen. I know some people do not follow hadith, I'm just giving my personal reasonings.

Peachy · 22/06/2011 14:46

That's one of the best tings about MN isn't it Goth? Unless someone is on my FB or known to me then I have no clue about ethnicity, faith, or anyting else unles they choose to share. Fab.

Riveninside · 22/06/2011 15:13

We might be bikini wearing martians Grin
i wear hijab cos of hadith and niqab through personal choice. Byt only where uts safe to do so.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 22/06/2011 15:48

A hadith is a... received teaching, not in the Quran, IIRC?

Is there really one saying, don't go putting your hair in a big bun, cause it'll look like a camel hump? Or are you talking about something else entirely and I have firmly seized the wrong end of the stick?

Riveninside · 22/06/2011 16:29

Its a hadith reportedly said by the Prophet (pbuh) and has to do about women wearing hijab for beauty and fashion and not for modesty.
