Husband of a friend telling off my child

I was invited out this morning with some neighbours who are good friends. The husband is known to be snappy and to have little patience with his own children.
In the space of an hour, he told my 4 year old daughter to 'stop whining' and in a cafe, he snapped at her to 'OI, STOP THAT' when she kicked him under the table ( she was doing it playfully). My daughter burst into tears and came and sat on my lap. When his wife, who is a good friend, commented to him to calm down, he agressively responded 'Its not my problem if she's crying cos I told her off for not kicking me. She can deal with it'.

She is 4.

I said nothing as I didn't want to upset his wife, who I know was mortified.

I really want to email him tomorrow to tell him how inappropriate and uncalled for it was. AIBU? What would you do?

PS. The ironic thing is, he has an obnoxious daughter who is really badly behaved and I say nothing!

Ivortheengine8 · 21/06/2011 21:49

Yes, I don't even mind kids kicking anymore.
Mine kicked a lovely old lady in the shin today and I just thought....what the hell?
Let kids be kids.

JoySzasz · 21/06/2011 21:58

Yes,all "moving to music" baby classes are going to be replaced with "kicking to music" -all gentle (of course )....building up to swift painful shin kicks by about 4!

all because of this enlightening thread...

At ease!

Ivortheengine8 · 21/06/2011 22:04

lol, Yipeeee! Grin
At least Kicking is healthier for a child than sitting slumped in front of a tv all day (physically) Maybe the NHS will actually promote it soon to prevent obesity.

mummyosaurus · 21/06/2011 22:07

It sounds to me like you should have had a closer eye on your DD. Kicking is not acceptable and it just not a playful thing to do.

But YANBU to complain at his manner of telling her off. He could have asked her politely not to kick him, explaining that it hurt, and so drawn your attention to the situation. Whining is par for the course with 4 year olds (I have one too).

Telling off anyone else's child is a very delicate thing and I would rather avoid people with ill disciplined children than get into the situation you are in.

exoticfruits · 21/06/2011 22:33

What a shame-I rather liked the fact it had gone off on a tangent!

tallulahxhunny · 21/06/2011 22:37

OMG you would absolutely hate to be my friend then OP, My friends little girl is a screamer, for absolutely no reason it could be anything from seeing a child she knows or just screaming or whining because she wants something. I regularly tell her off especially on the way to school in the mornings, usually its along the lines of, hey you, give it a rest, people are still sleeping you know!! or good god how do you stick that noise? (usually said to friend) And one time when she kicked me i told her i would kick her back, she never did it again Wink

But im not one who will tell other kids off and dont tell my own off they get told off exactly the same !
