Husband of a friend telling off my child

I was invited out this morning with some neighbours who are good friends. The husband is known to be snappy and to have little patience with his own children.
In the space of an hour, he told my 4 year old daughter to 'stop whining' and in a cafe, he snapped at her to 'OI, STOP THAT' when she kicked him under the table ( she was doing it playfully). My daughter burst into tears and came and sat on my lap. When his wife, who is a good friend, commented to him to calm down, he agressively responded 'Its not my problem if she's crying cos I told her off for not kicking me. She can deal with it'.

She is 4.

I said nothing as I didn't want to upset his wife, who I know was mortified.

I really want to email him tomorrow to tell him how inappropriate and uncalled for it was. AIBU? What would you do?

PS. The ironic thing is, he has an obnoxious daughter who is really badly behaved and I say nothing!

Enjoyed my trip very much ...I don't know it at all though...

When I get back to the UK, I hope to do a lot more trips!

prettybird · 21/06/2011 17:36

I've been to Boston (long weekend), Vail (skiing), Miami (JC World Congress - met dh there), Texas and Wilmington (the last two on business so didn't see much)

Animation · 21/06/2011 17:43

"i think he had a right to tell her off for kicking. or you should have done it."

Yes, thanks, Skybluepearl. Back down to business. Anyone on our team want to take this one?

I'm just about to serve the evening meal here. Smile Confused

Did you? Boys are going (museum) in the next 2 weeks!

We live about 3 hrs from there ...we live in the sticks Grin

prettybird · 21/06/2011 17:51

But at least you know where the UK (and its constituent parts) is/are. I've met many Americans who don't know that much ("Is Scotland close to England?" "Do you have Universities in Scotland" Confused)

Nearly fell of a chair lift in Vail when the American sitting beside me turned and asked "So what do you think of Margaret Thatcher's attitude to Europe?" (this was back in 1990)

JoySzasz · 21/06/2011 17:51

We are heading for Dorset next year though, I am so excited to be coming home and to such a lovely place.

prettybird · 21/06/2011 17:54

... didn't realise you weren't actually American (having insulted a whole host of Americans but not the sort that frequent Mumsnet Wink)

JoySzasz · 21/06/2011 17:55

prettybird I have no excuse ~ I am originally from London!

I get some funny questions too Wink

My DH is American though, that is how I ened up here.

JoySzasz · 21/06/2011 17:56

Grin prettybird

Ivortheengine8 · 21/06/2011 18:03

Its not that lovely Joy! I loathe living here after being away for 4 years. But then that's London. There are some nice parts that still exist! :)

JoySzasz · 21/06/2011 18:11

Ivor, you are in North London right?

My family came over to the South side from North London in'71 (when I was born)

They eventually recovered Wink

Where did you live for those 4 years ...sorry, bit nosey...

Ivortheengine8 · 21/06/2011 18:41

I guess I will get used to it some day :( Blooming husband!

My parents took us off to France where we lived for 3 years when I was a teenager, then when I finished uni, I went off to teach English in Korea, Spain and Greece. I had always looked forward to coming home and being able to understand what everyone was saying but alas, I met my husband who wanted to work in London so............that was the end of that!!
Also stayed in west Africa for a few months.

Really North London isn't so bad, could be worse!! :) People have been more friendly than I first thought.
I really miss the outdoors life though, having proper summers etc
I also miss the villiage and family life you get abroad because I don't think that is appreciated in the UK.

Do you miss anything about here?

But then I guess I moaned about other stuff when I was living elsewhere!!
The grass is always greener! :)

JoySzasz · 21/06/2011 18:57

Well, being a Londoner (albiet Wimbledon) I miss the suburbs (I am a little strange)

I don't miss 'proper' London at all ...I spent years stomping around the streets in central London,I wouldn't do that again Grin

You have travelled a lot :) I did too (with my work)

I totally understand that you miss village life/family ...that is why we are coming home -for those exact same reasons :)

I am excited to be living in Dorset when we get back!

I hope to give a sample of that life to my children.

exoticfruits · 21/06/2011 19:23

It is quite heartening to know that after 700 posts on something the 4yr old will have forgotten, people have got bored and moved on!

Ivortheengine8 · 21/06/2011 19:28

lol Exotic, yep! We are all friends now! Grin

We are going on holiday to Charmouth! :)
My parents live in Somerset now. The South West does have lovely parts.
Do you miss travelling?
I still miss the thrill I think of going into the unknown, but I have become all 'responsible' now.
I thought I would find it very hard to settle somewhere but once you have kids I think that grounds you doesnt it.
I would love to do more though when I am 'old' and all the kids are grown up.

exoticfruits · 21/06/2011 19:33

I was out all day-missed it all.Grin

Ivortheengine8 · 21/06/2011 19:36

I havent been back long myself. I'm just a tagalong. :)

JoySzasz · 21/06/2011 20:20

ivor no,I don't miss traveling one bit :)

I always hated it,but unfortunately it was a massive part of my job!

You are right,I believe it is the kids that make us stay put...for a bit Wink

Actually the part of Dorset we are moving to,boarders Somerset and Wiltshire.

I am glad I tried the US, we would have always wondered what it might be like , if we had not.

Hope you have a lovely holiday :)

Ivortheengine8 · 21/06/2011 21:14

What do you do Joy (sorry if it's nosy!) You don't have to say!

JoySzasz · 21/06/2011 21:34

No, :) I don't mind at all...

I was a fashion model/ TV commercial actress for 20 years (since a child)

When my youngest son was born I gave it up, as it was impossible to do the school thing (for me ,at that point) for my eldest.

In 2005 we came to the US and we had our little girl in' 08.

This year I will be 40,so a bit old to take up posing again Grin

I will need to find a new job at some point ...:)
