its a way of saying to women that you dont have to be a frumpy hippy to breastfeed and young sexy mums breastfeed too ...... that doesnt take a genious to work out. Loving the part with the fruit ha ha funny.....

crazycatlady · 18/06/2011 21:40

It is the association with sex that is awkward and unfortunate in a breastfeeding promotional video. You have to think about how this would be perceived by those who are anti BF, think it is somehow icky or inappropriate, or those who think their boobs are just for sexual purposes.

It is a clumsy and misguided campaign.

MillyR · 18/06/2011 21:41

To paraphrase from Postcards from the Edge:

Burlesque dancer or frumpy hippy? These are my options?

crazycatlady · 18/06/2011 21:42

But doesn't the title 'Apple Dumplings' just SCREAM OUT 'frumpy hippy'?

This whole thing is just so odd and badly thought out.

xxxtallulahblue · 18/06/2011 21:42

thats thier problem if they think thier boobs are just for sexual purposes they need to get over it because thats not the main purpose of breasts

Crosshair · 18/06/2011 21:43

Dont young mum's were topshop, select, primark ect. Never seen one out and about dressed as a lady of the night. Im no genious genius though.

MillyR · 18/06/2011 21:44

But it isn't just their problem, is it? They also make it a problem by making nasty comments to women, including mothers trying to breastfeed in public.

WorzselMummage · 18/06/2011 21:46

Is Apple Dumpling the title ? I thought it was the name of the production company or something.

Apple dumpling as a name would be really really ridiculous, wouldn't it ?

crazycatlady · 18/06/2011 21:46

OK Tallulah, so when Virginia set out to make this video to promote breastfeeding to 'all women of childbearing age and society as a whole' (as she requested in her post on MN months ago), then she meant to exclude those who think of boobs being just for sex? Sorry, I missed the part where she said that Hmm

thats why this video is important to show to these vulnerable young girls or women this is a popular way to feed your baby.... The more breastfeeding is shown on tv the more normal it will become and it will change to the minority having that silly attitude can you not see this im really confused as to why nobody can see this

crazycatlady · 18/06/2011 21:50

The production team has clearly got confused with what they personally think is funny and cool, and what their target audience(s) think is funny and cool. I'd love to know what focus groups and external research they did before commissioning the work?

Sadly this video suffers the same fate as so many BF promotional campaigns in that it is too inward-looking and does not appeal beyond its own demographic (or even that widely within it, given the criticism it's faced both here and on other forums!)

well surely small minded women that think of boobs being just for sex wouldnt get involved would they? you dont have to point out the obvious when advertising for people to be involved in something if they want to be involved they will..........

Crosshair · 18/06/2011 21:54

'well surely small minded women that think of boobs being just for sex wouldnt get involved would they?'

I dont think its fair to call people small minded because they think boobs=sex.

Crosshair · 18/06/2011 21:56

And surely the boob=sex women are the sort you want to attract to BF?

xxxtallulahblue · 18/06/2011 21:56

who are you talking to soverylucky?

MillyR · 18/06/2011 21:56

TB, I don't know what you think about the sex industry or about breastfeeding, but I suspect what you think about it is different to what many other people think about it. When other people think something different to you, it isn't because they don't understand, it is because they have a different perspective.

You can't argue with people to convince them that the video is in fact great. The video has to get its own message across, and it hasn't done. Some people like it but a lot of other people don't. The reason many other people don't is because of the burlesque element. The fact that many people either really don't like burlesque or don't like it outside of specific adult contexts is something that should have been considered before making the film.

Burlesque really isn't part of youth culture anyway, if young mothers are the intended audience.

crazycatlady · 18/06/2011 21:56

No they probably wouldn't get involved in creating the campaign, no.

But that's not the point is it? The point of any BF promotion is to actually promote BF, and reach out to a particular audience or audiences, with a message you want them to hear and absorb...not just to get people to take part in the making of a video, production of a poster or whatever.

crazycatlady · 18/06/2011 21:58

TB my last post was in reply to your of 21:52:26

xxxtallulahblue · 18/06/2011 21:59

Im not trying to persuade anyone..... just wanna say i think its brilliant!

Crosshair · 18/06/2011 22:01

You seem to be saying alot of things and most of them contradict each other.

'thats why this video is important to show to these vulnerable young girls or women this is a popular way to feed your baby'

Showing vulnerable young girls, women in their late 20's early 30's dancing in corsets does what now? Personally I think the video needed more random cows.
