I remember reading of an exchange where Philip looked at a foreign dignitary's medals and said:

"I didn't know [whatever country it was] was in the war that long!"

The dignitary replied:

"Well at least I didn't get them for marrying my wife!"

Not his war????

I seem to have wandered into an alternative universe of some sort!

seeker · 11/06/2011 16:00

"Someone like Moira Stewart would have had a better attitude and more respectful approach."

Respectful????? Yep - definitely an alternative universe.

Seeker - you're getting on my nerves.

seeker · 11/06/2011 17:20

Why don't you go away then?

Stewie - what are you agreeing with?

exoticfruits · 11/06/2011 17:28

I always admire people who are themselves and don't go and have 'make- overs' or PR people trying to improve their image.
I wouldn't do what he does for any money.
I haven't a clue what he is really like, but I expect he is a product of his age and background. He probably isn't a deep thinker-more a doer -but not knowing him I can't say. Anyway he keeps quiet on personal matters which is a good thing.

Animation · 11/06/2011 17:29

I was asking Seeker what her point was?

exoticfruits · 11/06/2011 17:30

I think her point is that she disagrees with you Animation!

Animation · 11/06/2011 17:34

How have you come to the conclusion he's not NICE?

I saw a badly conducted interview and he got a bit prickly with the interviewee.

cory · 11/06/2011 17:34

I admire people who are themselves- if that self turns out to be a pleasant person to be.

Someone who makes stupid and unthinking quips about the unemployed and the benefits of murderous dictatorships can only use the excuse of being a product of his age if the majority of other people his age also behave the same way. The same goes for rudeness. Making silly jokes about a country you are visiting would count as rudeness with most people of that generation.

When did you last hear the Queen make a racist or bigotted remark? Or even a rude one?

Animation · 11/06/2011 17:35

I would like to know from Seeker what she is getting at - because she appears to be working up to something and not being very direct about it.

exoticfruits · 11/06/2011 17:38

I think AIBU threads get a bit silly. I think that seeker is generally pretty direct! Anyway I don't know why I am speaking for others. It is impossible to know what he is really like just as a member of the public-I'm not sure I want to find out.

seeker · 11/06/2011 17:42

what do you mean what is my point?

My point is that everything i have observed of Prince Phillip is that he is ia racist, rude, sexist and has never done anything of any value to society in his life. But somehow on here he is being painted as a national treasure. I have asked for evidence for this point of view - because there is loads of evidence to support mine. And nobody has come up with any.

I'm not sure how I can be any more direct than that!

Animation · 11/06/2011 17:44

Seeker - I suggested that Moira Stewart might be a better alternative because she might conduct an interview with the courtesy and deference that would be more fitting towards a Queen or Prince. The over familiar, touchy feely approach is the wrong approach - it got short shrift.

Animation · 11/06/2011 17:45

In the interview he gave short shrift - does that mean he's not a nice man.

seeker · 11/06/2011 17:47

AH. Well, I think courtesy is incredibly important, and I can;t imagine Fiona Bruse being anything but courteous.

I don't think deference is a desirable attitude under any circumstances, and respect has to be earned. And you don't earn it just by being a prince or living a long time. And as far as I am aware, Prince Philip has done nothing to earn anyone's respect.

Direct enough for you?

Animation · 11/06/2011 17:48

"he is ia racist, rude, sexist and has never done anything of any value to society in his life. But somehow on here he is being painted as a national treasure."

Ah right I see.

Animation · 11/06/2011 17:49

Yes Seeker - you are getting to the nitty gritty now!

whomovedmychocolate · 11/06/2011 17:50

He is the Boris Johnson of his generation. No-one takes him too seriously and he assiduously gets things done behind the scenes. You should never take a fool too lightly, they are often up to more than first appears.
