Today I have read a comment that someone's potential home looks like "a council house on a sink estate," seen a debate about "chav fashion," vile comments about "Poor Kids" etc and seen numerous threads over the past few days where people fight to gang up together against the infesting lower orders with their bad grammar, poor articulation, txt spk and poor spelling.

WTF people?

It is snobbery. Nothing else.

It is true hully. What is the world coming to?

mind you a couple of times I was being a twat and probably deserved it. But mostly just big old meanies.

I thought fifi was 25. I resented her pert youthfulness.

Primalscream · 09/06/2011 13:33

Ha ha fifi. Me too.

Hullygully · 09/06/2011 13:34

I thought she'd eaten 25 stottie cakes (I imagined them a bit like rock cakes but bigger) and was a positive hippopotamus.

The thread you mentioned did get out of hand, yes. But the op of that thread in question gave the impression of self promotion. Also she came to the attention of MN from those who also use the boards on nm.

She annoyed, insulted and berated a lot of people on both sites; and only initially got defensive and rude herself when people, quite rightly pointed out that some of her comments were very insensitive to people on the conception boards. If you had seen the attack and venom she employed in trying to slate this site on mn in it's entirety you'd realise that she was a few pastrys short of a fruitshoot.

It's to easy to see group mentality as always a bad thing. Mumsnet is a better example that self moderation does work rather than self moderation fails. Mumsnetters generally vote with their keyboard or by arsing around on a "bad" op, not mature, no, but effective. But it still detracts from any inappropriate witterings on any op purposefully stirring.

On mn and others the thread will keep rising up again and again causing resentment between posters and mods.

Hully has made a good point. Keep the respect and we keep Mumsnet.

Honeydragon · 09/06/2011 13:36

Hully stottie cakes are bread.

Hullygully · 09/06/2011 13:36

But...but...but Paggy everyone loves you. You're like the world's most loved MNer.

Hullygully · 09/06/2011 13:37

Are they? Gracious. Are they nice? Are they individual breads?

Primalscream · 09/06/2011 13:37

What is a stottie cake? It sounds unhealthy and Scottish

Pagwatch · 09/06/2011 13:42

Stottie cakes sounds like something that might be a shit.
Like scutters. My aunt used to call me a little scutter which I mistakenly assumed was cute and affectionate.

Honeydragon, I never read her original Mn thread which kicked it all off. As i said she was silly, brought much of it on herself and was obviously told so but I got the impression she was also a bit low and vulnerable and sometimes think we have to step back from the PC and remember these are people who we don't know what issues they are dealing with in RL and giving someone a kicking just cos you can as your smarter, and wittier, stronger and it's all pretty faceless and anonymous, isn't what we should be aiming for. I've written some things I haven't been too proud about sometimes to people but I try to reign myself in and remember there is a real person on the other end of the Pc.

god maybe i should just change my name to Mary Whitehouse - i sound like a barrel of laughs!

superwomanisamyth · 09/06/2011 13:58

Can people please start taking responsibility for their own fuck-ups and stop blaming the government please?

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 09/06/2011 14:02

Hear hear superwoman!

Hullygully · 09/06/2011 14:04

That is a very interesting post, superwoman.

I owuld say that it contains a number of complexities: govt policies directly affect people's lives and their ability to do something about them or not. Individuals can fuck up on an individual level, eg steal their boss' computer and get sacked, but on the macro level, there is little they can do about the economic and social conditions in which they find themselves.

Stottie cakes are bread. I think other people call them flat cakes. In Geordie land they are called stotties. They sell them in Greggs next to the sausage rolls

MN has been a bit unedifying recently. lots of sneering.

i didn't like that thread where the OP basically told people to f off if they used text speak or can't spell

thought it was extremely presumptuous

Hullygully · 09/06/2011 14:22

They look nice..

OP posts:
PinotGrigiosKittens · 09/06/2011 14:28

Beer you have great muffins.

I can't help but loathe text speak as I can't understand it. I use proper punctuation in my text messages. It makes me feel old and that just won't do. I am 36 and I don't want to be an old gimmer until I am at least...? 50? Yes - 50 is the point at which I accept my opinion is outdated. Til then I hate text speak and will moan and whinge.

Spelling is something as a rule people can't help. My sister can't spell for toffee but is a bright spark so it's not that shite spellers are thick. I can spell but make typos like I have sausage fingers. Meh.

And my toe is bleeding as I just walked into the kitten, she jumped, hissed and stabbed a claw into me. I have loo roll wedged round my toe like a fool. Like a fool!

Fifis25StottieCakes · 09/06/2011 14:31

Thats them, they make a lovely sarnie. You cut them into 4 and slice to make 4. You get them all over up here. I love scottish square bread but no body sells it.Sad

a lovely sanwich

Fifis25StottieCakes · 09/06/2011 14:32

Hullygully · 09/06/2011 14:32
