to not care about immigration?

So many people seem to have a huge problem with it and I really don't understand why.

The crazy thing is, I live in a hugely multicultural area and most of the people I know who have a problem with this, live in predominantly white suburbs.

We have a problem here with alcoholic homeless people fighting and screaming in the streets - none of them are immigrants.

another one about healthcare and education:

schools are (in theory) paid for by council tax, which is paid by everyone apart from a few exception.
healthcare is paid for by NI-contributions, i.e. everyone that works.

I know, it is not as simple as that, though.

Thanks alice. I actually needed that. I have been feeling quite sad following this thread that there are a lot of people who think I (and others) are unreasonable, insane and morally repugnant for thinking that we should care about how other people live and should be prepared to do something about it rather than sit back and say how terribly unfortunate it is, but hey, that's life, it doesn't affect me so I have no obligation to change it. Sad

Actually, I don't give a damn if other people couldn't care less about other human beings. That is a matter for their own conscience. Just don't stick your boot in their face and don't deride people for saying that everyone deserves equal treatment and oportunities in life, not just a select few. You may not agree that as individuals we have a moral obligation to every other person on this planet, but please try to understand why some people do hold these beliefs.

Equal treatment is OK but I do not see that equal opportunity will ever be possible as long as people have the right to provide the best chance for their children.

Fine, but do not expect normal people in this country to pay for your beliefs!"

Has it occured to you that we DO care how other people live, just people in this country who have seen their standard of living plummet in recent years just so people like YOU (that clearly are not affected by immigration) can feel a bit better about themselves?

ohanotherone · 19/05/2011 13:26

I definately agree that in theory everyone should pay their taxes. But there is a whole level of people living in this country who live illegally and don't pay taxes because our controls are so lax. There are certain streets in London where you can go and hire an illegal immigrant for £20 a day to do stuff like moving furniture etc.. for you. Some are paid in Rupees and live with extended families who are legal so never even scratch the anntenae of the taxman.

evitas · 19/05/2011 14:11

ohanotherone that is why illegal immigration continues because the host society is permanentlyexploiting the immigrants and take advantage of their illegal status. Is it fair to "hire an illegal immigrant for £20 a day to do stuff like moving furniture etc.. for you"?? I don't think so.

Alice I also agree with you

ohanotherone · 19/05/2011 17:23

I didn't say that I did it, I said that these places exist and the society that we live in lets it happen because in this country we have very poor immigration controls.

evitas · 19/05/2011 18:08

ohanotherone, I agree with you that there is a poor control, but I think the control should focus on trying to fight the illegal networks that make a fortune out of their business and exploit both the immigrants here and their families back home.

ohanotherone · 19/05/2011 20:31

Absolutely!
