To be dismayed at the increasing number of pregnant women I see smoking

I used to notice the odd one or two but I've seen loads recently. Maybe it's not that there's more women smoking in pregnancy but just more not giving a shit what people think.

"Maybe it's not that there's more women smoking in pregnancy but just more not giving a shit what people think."

If that's the reason you're coming across more pregnant women who smoke then it's good to know that the fear of other people's disapproval hasn't completely taken over.

YANBU to be dismayed at the increase - you are entitled to feel as you wish.

If you were to judge or dictate, that would be a differenc matter. Wink :)

I gave up smoking when i found out i was pg with dc but my god it was bloody hard. I would never judge as I know that it was so hard and I also know that had I not had ms I might not have been able to do it!!!

AlpinePony · 13/05/2011 15:51

Sounds as though your neighbourhood is going to the dogs. Next they'll build a greggs and it'll be game over.

BimboNo5 · 13/05/2011 15:53

I loved smoking when pg. I especially loved resting the ashtray on bump- bump loved it too and tried to kick it off! Aww!!

millie30 · 13/05/2011 15:53

I'm quite glad if they don't give a shit what other people think about their smoking. Since when does a pregnant woman's body become public business?

squeakytoy · 13/05/2011 15:57

Eeeeeh you wouldnt have like to be in the pub last sunday, there was a woman in the beer garden, smoking AND drinking... Grin

5318008 · 13/05/2011 15:58

best move somewhere more salubrious

HTH

MotherPanda · 13/05/2011 16:00

I think its a very selfish thing to do... seeing as you have to be 18 years old to smoke now, i'm not sure why people think its ok for your unborn child to be smoking 20 a day...

Have been gleefully watching Misbehaving mums to be on bbc three. Judgey Pants held up high.

ashamedandconfused · 13/05/2011 16:00

Oh yes, i hate seeing this YANBU

have seen them complete with their 6month pg bumps, and their mobile drip stands, outside the front of the hospital

It was all i could do not to scream in their faces on the day we went in to see the consultant after DD was stillborn Sad

BimboNo5 · 13/05/2011 16:00

A child in the womb doesn't breathe so how can they be 'smoking 20 a day'?

bluepaws · 13/05/2011 16:01

agree its horrible and very selfish not to mention disgusting

if you cant put an unborn baby first, what does it say about you

Nancy66 · 13/05/2011 16:03

I never really 'get' why people smoke - but I understand that they do and it's their choice. I'd also hate to see a complete smoking ban.

But, I don't like seeing pregnant women smoking. Just seems like such a shitty, selfish thing to do. I don't see how those women can then go on to be good mothers.

squeakytoy · 13/05/2011 16:05

nicotine goes into the bloodstream, I assume the bloodstream connects in some way to the child...

alphamummy · 13/05/2011 16:05

YANBU

Bimbo - are you being serious?!

BimboNo5 · 13/05/2011 16:06

Squeaky thats not the same as 'breathing in' or 'smoking 20 a day' is it?

MotherPanda · 13/05/2011 16:06

BimboNo5, the child in the womb doesnt breathe itself, but gets all the oxygen from the mum - so nasty things like carbon monoxide and the other 4000 chemicals in cigarettes go straight through to the baby as well.

I think its sad that a lot of people don't know about that.

sausagesandmarmelade · 13/05/2011 16:07

Couldn't give a toss what people do to their own bodies...but endangering the health of an unborn child is a different matter entirely...and the mothers should be held liable in some way.

People aren't ignorant of the risks...there's been so much out there in the way of education that it's just selfish...
It amounts to child abuse and these people aren't fit to be mothers.

It's no thanks to the mothers that so many of these babies survive pregnancy....even if they do go on to suffer various other problems.

Same view re mothers who drink heavily throughout pregnancy.

BimboNo5 · 13/05/2011 16:07

Its sad that people think a child in the womb sits breathing in 20 lambert and butlers via its mother- but dont let that get in the way of villifying anyone hey

lubberlich · 13/05/2011 16:08

God knows how they do it - I was dry heaving for 9 months just from inhaling air.

squeakytoy · 13/05/2011 16:09

Bimbo, really? you dont think an unborn child deserves to develop without its' mother adding drugs to its body?

BimboNo5 · 13/05/2011 16:11

Many people drive hence polluting their foetus with carbon monoxide, use harmfull chemicals in the home, drink caffeine...
