DD ate all the grapes before purchase. The checkout assistant actually held up the remains before scanning and said 'What is this?' in a very disapproving voice. All that was left was a plastic bag, a stalk, and few squashed half grapes.Blush

But even worse than that, I LOST my shopping list half way around. We went back to search but it was nowhere to be found. I have to admit in all honesty that it had 'nice ham' written on it!Blush

I am mortified.

Hmm at stealing!

Firstl the CHILD, ate the grapes, not the mother, and since criminal responsibility is of the age of 10, she is not responsible for her actions, and since the OP never ate them, and had no intent to steal the grapes, she is legally not a criminal in the eyes of the law, and DID NOT FARKING STEAL grapes!.

FannyPriceless · 07/05/2011 17:54

pirate Thanks for the Wine.

Though, not sure I'm supposed to be drinking this while sitting on the naughty step wearing the bad mother crown. Meh.

Her mother allowed her to though. So the mother is responsible.

The actual value of the item is irrelevant as far as the law goes.

Yes, it seems petty, and it isnt a big deal to a lot of people, but if every customer were to scoff a pounds worth of food without paying, how much would the supermarket be losing on a daily basis.

What is so hard in saying to a child "if you behave, you can have some grapes once we have paid for them", rather than teach them that is fine to just help yourself before you pay for anything.

worraliberty · 07/05/2011 18:00

And not only that, but if she's under 8yrs old...I hope she cut them in half! Grin

BabyDubsEverywhere · 07/05/2011 18:01

With ref to the ham...

my poor mother was mortified when she once lost a shopping list. My sister only ate 'nice ham from the deli counter', i for some reason would only eat the processed wafer stuff.

Her list said

Nice ham for X
Crap ham for Y

I do like to remind her of how i wasnt worth the nice food and everyone knew it Grin

alistron1 · 07/05/2011 18:01

Under 8?! I still cut them in half for myself Grin

AmazingBouncingFerret · 07/05/2011 18:02

Terrible and I bet she was standing up in the trolley too.

Wink

How can you label someone as 'hopeless' on the basis of one post?

blimey i have seen people medically diagnosed, marriages ripped apart, and posters advised legally on less Grin

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 07/05/2011 18:03

This thread has given me a warm, contented glow. When there are grape threads on MN. all is right with the world.

Bizkit · 07/05/2011 18:07

Ive never given food to my DC while shopping, they are told not until its paid for, simple as that.
I used to work at a supermarket and it did kinda nark me when I saw kids munching on grapes or bananas round the store, as the parents must know they are basically not gonna pay for that item, what gives them the right to do that??
Anyhoo, is still quite amusing that the cashier weighed the stalk Grin

chrisonabike · 07/05/2011 18:08

"you deserve crap ham" = Best Insult Ever

madonnawhore · 07/05/2011 18:09

Saw a man in the lunch queue in Waitrose (I know) yesterday, eating his lunch. The queue was really long and I guess he couldn't wait. He must have got to the checkout and handed over a load of empty packaging.

FannyPriceless · 07/05/2011 18:12

evenless Happy to oblige. Next week I'm starting a thread about disabled loos / Greggs sausage rolls / bumsex. (delete according to preference)

I used to have regular customers like that, Madonna, at shop where i worked 20 yrs ago. tbh, it so got on my nerves that's why DC are never allowed to nibble anything before it's been scanned at least.
But not to go back to that debate...

I was in a cafe today with retired parents and 3 lively DC (eldest manky laprat ungrateful ill-mannered brat DC off at adventure camp, thankfully), and DC were SO embarrassing. Swinging around the place like the ends of a pendulum (sigh). Make you feel any better, OP?

I always misplace my shopping list 1 minute before I walk thru the door, it's almost like part of my supermarket shopping ritual (the list fairy whisks it away to reassure me all is normal). I'd be confused if I still had the list by the time I went to put first item in my basket.

squeakytoy · 07/05/2011 18:15

Madonna, the packaging would have the price on it though. Its a different matter with things that are priced based on their weight at the till.

I had rotten hayfever last week and opened a pack of tissues that I had yet to pay for, but I had cash on me, and still paid the correct price. I have done the same with a bottle of water, and with headache tablets.

florencedougal · 07/05/2011 18:17

ive drank orange juice when i was feeling a bit lightheaded, but always give the bottle to the cashier to scan

stoppinchingthedummy · 07/05/2011 18:18

Well im another yabu -simply because if your child must eat grapes pick some up that are packed with a price on so you can pay for them - I completly get feeding a child something round the supermarket if they are hungary/being a pain ,i usually give mine the end of a french bagette ,it takes them the whole time were shopping to get through it Grin

Newgolddream · 07/05/2011 18:19

ZimboMum "I just think its quite funny that the cashier weighed the stalk! My judgypants are firmly round my hips and the outrage you've caused over 15 grapes has made me grin"

Me to, Im with you all the way zimbomum! Its hilarious all the judgey comments about a child eating a few grapes GrinGrin
If the cashier was that bothered about it she would have got some more grapes, weighed them and charged the OP the price, weighing a stalk - its sooo funny.

But I guess some people are just so perfect and moralistic they would have had the OP arrested by now. (for what I dont know as it was a child )

BabyDubsEverywhere · 07/05/2011 18:20

We are that family that lets the children sit in the trolley and snack around the shop, but only on items that we can pay for, like yumyums Blush

actually no Blush i cant see the problem Confused

So long as you pay at the end, naughty op Grin

Indith · 07/05/2011 18:23

The greengrocer just gave my dcs some grapes to eat the other day when it became obvious that I was completely incapable of preventing dd from grabbing at everything. I strapped her in her buggy after the first couple of tellings off but she could still reach the stuff they had piled on the floor including a lovely mushroom display and dd does love mushrooms.

UrsulaBuffay · 07/05/2011 18:25

Do we not cut grapes in half before we give them to the DCs?

BabyDubsEverywhere · 07/05/2011 18:33

Ive taught my dd to bite the grapes before putting them in her mouth fully, same with cherry toms. Saves me chopping up. My DS who is older wont do this but as he refuses to eat most either im not so worried Smile

CurlyCasper · 07/05/2011 18:35

poor fanny, you come on here to have a giggle about the combination of two classic MN experiences and get told you are hopeless. What a harsh thing to say, regardless of anyone's opinion on grape munching. fwiw, given all you have achieved in the last year, I think this one blip is a tiny drop in a big ocean. Or even a 6p stalk in a placky bag. Grin

kaid100 · 07/05/2011 18:38

OK this seems to much a coincidence to be real, but here, it appears, is the checkout assistant's take on it: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1209410-Grape-theft-at-work-today-was-i-unreasonable-to-weigh-a-stalk?msgid=25232319#25232319
