DD ate all the grapes before purchase. The checkout assistant actually held up the remains before scanning and said 'What is this?' in a very disapproving voice. All that was left was a plastic bag, a stalk, and few squashed half grapes.Blush

But even worse than that, I LOST my shopping list half way around. We went back to search but it was nowhere to be found. I have to admit in all honesty that it had 'nice ham' written on it!Blush

I am mortified.

what's wrong with 'nice ham'? (dives for cover)

squeakytoy · 07/05/2011 17:01

I think its taking the piss a bit to let your child stuff their face with unpaid for food, which you know damn well you wont be paying for. Different if there is a bar code and a price on them already.

TheFlyingOnion · 07/05/2011 17:01

Grin at Hecate

These things happen; its not the world's worst crime, obv.

For future reference, I resent paying for stalks anyway and always break the stalk off the broccoli so I don't have to pay extra when it is weighed

Supermarkets should put a grape only till as you enter the shop. Solves all problems.

OP, do you sometimes write 'shit ham' on your list?

squeakytoy · 07/05/2011 17:03

I always break the heavy stalks off broccoli.. I dont eat it though as I wander around.. I leave it for anyone who might bizarrely enjoy broccoli stalk! Grin

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 07/05/2011 17:04

don't break off the stalks! Broccoli stalks are LOVELY for soup. really smooth and creamy.

Jix · 07/05/2011 17:04

i think some people are being way too harsh here. don't any of you remember the nightmare of getting 2 small kids round a supermarket and trying to do a million things at once??

i always used to pick up 2 bags of grapes ... one would in all probabililty get eaten and then i'd let the cashier weigh the other one so that i could pay for it.

or i'd pick up a bag of apples or a sandwich that was already priced, so it didn't matter if it got eaten on the way.

in fact, don't think i EVER managed a trip to the supermarket without Something being eaten before we got to the end!!

i think cashiers are used to it :) and are usually quite understanding of small children. also MUCH better than having a wailing child!!

FannyPriceless · 07/05/2011 17:05

exit What am I going to do with my 6p stalk? Flay myself, obviously.

I do.

I used to take something and give it to them. or buy something and give it to them.

tbh, I feared being rugby tackled by Security in the middle of the cereal aisle if I let them tuck into anything without first paying for it.

So I made sure I always went prepared.

Sometimes I would grab something, pay for it and then go and do my shopping. clutching the receipt, ready to wave it if Security came hurtling towards me Grin

squeakytoy · 07/05/2011 17:08

As a kid I was never given anything to eat as we wandered around a supermarket.. why do children need to be eating something all the time to keep them quiet or make them behave???

nickelbabe · 07/05/2011 17:09

okay, in future: weigh the grapes before your DC gets hold of them.
(there are those little manual scales in the veg seciton)

or grab the grapes first, then go to the kiosk or the fast checkout and pay for them (make sure you get the receipt!)
then let the DC have them.

TheMonster · 07/05/2011 17:09

Urgh. Unwashed grapes.

susssiq · 07/05/2011 17:10

Have just realised how much I love my supermarket that puts all the slightly bruised bananas in a barrel with a cuddly monkey and a sign "for kids to eat round shop"

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 07/05/2011 17:10

That's true, squeakytoy. The first hint of a moan of whinge from me round the supermarket earned me The Look Of Death from my mother.

Enough to turn the mightiest warrior to dust, that look.

Why couldn't you stop her from eating the grapes? How could she have eaten a whole bunch without you noticing. She will suffer from a very uncomfortable tummy after eating that lot and, possibly worse, as they were not washed. You do know what fruit and vegetables are sprayed with as they are growing don't you?

You come across as rather hopeless, tbh.

Icelollycraving · 07/05/2011 17:17

Unwashed grapes indeed,yuck!
Yabu for letting her eat them before paying, the till lady asking a question was yr time to say how many ish (not to the nearest grape obv) you thought there may have been. I find it odd people eating or drinking in a supermarket before paying, don't remember doing it or seeing it when I went with my mum. If she didn't weigh anything (even the stalk) she could have got into trouble, there are cameras watching the till ops all the time.
The crime isn't exactly the stuff of a mini series so don't worry too much!

At least it was obvious what had happened and you owned up to it. I have twice 'stolen' food from supermarkets in the five months since DS was born. In my defence it wasn't deliberate either time ? I have a tandem pushchair and on both occasions DD was in the seat furthest from me, insisting on holding something and yes, you've guessed it, I forgot and walked out without paying for it.

The first time it was some cheese, the second it was a nice punnet of M&S strawberries. Both times I was so far away from the shop by the time I realised I was too embarrassed to go back. I felt guilty for ages!

And, yes, you would have thought I'd have learnt after the first time.

Jesus, bibbity, don't hold back there.

How can you label someone as 'hopeless' on the basis of one post?

oprahfan · 07/05/2011 17:22

sorry op, but it is stealing. You cud have stopped the scoffing, i don't let my kids do it. people with yr thinking make us all pay more for our goods.
if your little 'uns really need to eat, at least get something with a bar code on it and that doesn't need weighing. you deserve crap ham.

susssiq · 07/05/2011 17:23

I live in sweden so a swedish one and they all do it over here :-)
