To wonder why anyone buys KrispyKreme doughnuts

Don't get me wrong, I am not averse to the odd doughnut from time to time. Plain, jam or apple filled, I am not picky. I also like the occasional cream cake when I really feel like treating myself. So, although I have never had one, I have no fundamental objection to the idea of a KrispyKreme doughnut other than the name (FGS why those 'K's and what is so hard about spelling 'cream' correctly - what sort of person would be more attracted to this product because of the awful spelling???) but that is a whole different issue.

What I cannot get over is the price of these things. The Tesco metro near where I work has recently started selling them, prominently displayed near the front of the shop. I kid you not when I tell you they are asking at least £1.50 each!! If you buy a box of 12 then it would set you back £9.45!!! Now if I walk to the back of the shop where the rest of the bakery items are I can buy jam doughnuts for 25p each or a bag of five for 60p.

Why on earth would anyone pay so much more for these "KrispyKreme" creations? They are only about the size of ordinary doughnuts and, apart from a bit of fancy glazing and a range of fillings, they do not look that amazing.

Is it me? Can someone enlighten me as to why anyone part with so much more dosh for a doughnut?

Because they are nice - I can inhale a box of the glazed original ones in under 10 minutes and the chocolate topped custard filled don;t get me started.

RJRabbit · 06/05/2011 12:56

Because they're bloody delicious.

FebreezeYourJeans · 06/05/2011 12:58

I've never had one, but my dd was invited to a KK factory party!!!
We were, genuinely, busy that day so I don't know what you do other than scoff doughnuts!

stabiliser15 · 06/05/2011 12:58

Because they are amazing. I'd pay twice what they cost for a box of chocolate glazed ones. It's a good job our nearest outlet is 100 miles away because I'd get so fat if it were closer.

RunforFun · 06/05/2011 12:58

Thet are in a different league.

animula · 06/05/2011 12:58

messybessie's link from cupcake thread the answer.

It plugs the hole of nothingness and horror, around which our lives, it sometimes feels, revolve.

People are encouraged to buy the big variety boxes to liven a up a dull work meeting with a touch of lightheartedness, thus revealing that they are people not workbots, and hint, tantalisingly, towards the individual behind the suit.

Oh, and to summon the ghost of existential freedom, lying, we all dream, beyond the bars of day to day existence.

MarionCole · 06/05/2011 12:59

Because they taste like little pieces of heaven.

And they are a treat.

hester · 06/05/2011 12:59

I have an incredibly sweet tooth, but I'm not mad keen on Krispy Kremes. Would eat one if it was handed to me, but would never actually buy one. (If only I could say the same about chocolate.)

Merlotmonster · 06/05/2011 13:01

Marion- I totally agree..!! heaven ;-)) and Ive just eaten one ! (the ring one that has ridges in it covered in the crisp icing that melts in the mouth)

OP - dont knock them if you havent tried them ! he he

Selks · 06/05/2011 13:05

They sound like the dietary equivalent of heroin to me. Far too nice, far too addictive and far too unhealthy.

animula · 06/05/2011 13:05

The world we are born into is an overdetermined mass of contending ends, essentially meaningless at its core. As humans, our sense of self is structured on an essential longing for unrealisable fulfilment.

We have dreams, ambitions, and a longing for intimacy-with-autonomy that can often go unfulfilled.

Some of us go on to achieve great things in life, with our names passed from mouth to mouth, through history. Many of us don't. Some of us achieve great love and understanding, extraordinary and sustaining relationships, that anchor us, always, in this world. Many of us achieve that intermittently, and feel anxieties about our place in the world, and sense of self. For the latter, there are doughnuts.

FoofffyShmoofffer · 06/05/2011 13:06

I have a sweet tooth and have never met a Krispy Kreme doughnut I liked. They are vile.

memphis83 · 06/05/2011 13:08

my brother plans his client visits so he can stop at outlets a few times a week, he even has mugs with the logo on!! i had one and had the worst heartburn i ver had...but the heartburn was so so worth it!!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 06/05/2011 13:08

Because they are the king of doughnuts and, at that price are absolutely only a once in a blue moon treat. I've only ever bought them at Christmas. Took some into the office one Christmas and they fell on them like vultures!

moomaa · 06/05/2011 13:08

They have them in our Tesco Metro and and at about 11am each day a man in a van turns up, empties all the ones in the display unit into a bin bag and fills it up with new ones. Loads of waste and their own dedicated delivery. That's partly why they are so expensive.

They are very tasty though. I love the cafes in the US, good for people watching.

Ragwort · 06/05/2011 13:10

If you hang around at Tesco at the end of the day they usually reduce them massively Blush. Agree, they are delicious.

YANBU... i wont but them for that reason either... have had a few in my time, and yes they were delicouse, but in all honesty id choose a normal jam doughnut instead.

im still happy to eat them but wont buy them... if i want to buy doughnuts, for me, its the jam ones i choose

pooka · 06/05/2011 13:10

They are far far too sweet. Taste of nothing but intense sugar.

The best doughnuts in the world are from Malcolm Barnecutt's bakery in Cornwall.

bruffin · 06/05/2011 13:11

Because they are nom (i have teens - am I allowed to use that word?) - but only as an occassional treat. There coffee is really nice as well especially gingerbread latte.

5Foot5 · 06/05/2011 13:11

Blimey!!

I like cakes as much as the next woman but I never expected them to inspire such eloquence and longing.

You know what you have gone and done now you lot? I will have to buy one to try for myself. Except I can't get away with buying just one I will have to include DH and DD too so there goes a fiver!

So - someone has already mentioned chocolate topping and custard filled - any other recommendations? And no I am not buying a whole box of 12 even if it is Friday

bruffin · 06/05/2011 13:12

We have the bakery not far away and it you are there at the right time they give out free ring ones

tyler80 · 06/05/2011 13:12

They were a huge let down for me. I'd heard tales about how wonderful they were but at the time they weren't sold in Missouri. So one day, when some friends decided to take a trip to Illinois just to buy some I was looking forward to seeing how great they were myself ...

...but it was just a doughnut

AuntieMaggie · 06/05/2011 13:13

I had a fruity one yesterday - passionfruit and mango icing or something and it was yummy!

twolittlemonkeys · 06/05/2011 13:14

Oh yes the chocolate glazed custard filled ones are yum. I have forgotten which flavours they do but they are all delicious. That said, 10 years ago I could have scoffed a whole box, whereas now I feel sick after 2. It's probably a good thing.

Chil1234 · 06/05/2011 13:15

We very occasionally visit the big Tesco at Watford where you can watch the KK doughnuts being made on the production line ....stamp, rise, along through the fryer, flip, through the fryer again, up the ramp, drain.... next to the coffee shop where you can buy a nice fresh one. Mesmerising entertainment for a wet Sunday afternoon :) Worth £1.50
