To wonder why anyone buys KrispyKreme doughnuts

5Foot5 · 06/05/2011 12:53

Don't get me wrong, I am not averse to the odd doughnut from time to time. Plain, jam or apple filled, I am not picky. I also like the occasional cream cake when I really feel like treating myself. So, although I have never had one, I have no fundamental objection to the idea of a KrispyKreme doughnut other than the name (FGS why those 'K's and what is so hard about spelling 'cream' correctly - what sort of person would be more attracted to this product because of the awful spelling???) but that is a whole different issue.

What I cannot get over is the price of these things. The Tesco metro near where I work has recently started selling them, prominently displayed near the front of the shop. I kid you not when I tell you they are asking at least £1.50 each!! If you buy a box of 12 then it would set you back £9.45!!! Now if I walk to the back of the shop where the rest of the bakery items are I can buy jam doughnuts for 25p each or a bag of five for 60p.

Why on earth would anyone pay so much more for these "KrispyKreme" creations? They are only about the size of ordinary doughnuts and, apart from a bit of fancy glazing and a range of fillings, they do not look that amazing.

Is it me? Can someone enlighten me as to why anyone part with so much more dosh for a doughnut?

Didn’t realise this was such an old thread, obviously the sort of topic I like as found I had already posted on it, 8 years ago Grin.

Similar here bananas they opened the first store as a drive through in my city and there was a 3 hour queue, a freeway was brought to a standstill and the police had to come to test the doughnuts help with crowd control.
Of course a week later the place was empty and you could just wander in but I think people got overexcited at not having to FLY interstate to get them

PinkHeartLovesCake · 14/05/2019 14:28

The best doughnuts are the hot sugar ones you get at the seaside 😋 However a Krispy Kreme is tasty

I find the jam doughnuts in supermarkets very disappointing to be honest, I don’t mind a Jam doughnut if freshly home made but I can’t be bothered with that often so a Krispy Kreme it is

DennisSkinnersMolotov · 14/05/2019 14:32

Krispy Kreme are good, fairground doughnuts are better, Greggs jam doughnuts are the nuts.

Supermarket doughnuts are invariably a bag of fatty, soggy disappointment.

ToastyFingers · 14/05/2019 14:37

They're pretty good and no more expensive than the shitty Gregg's rip off ones. Plus, as far as food treats go, they're cheaper than a Starbucks, or even a bacon roll from most places.

I do have an incredible sweet tooth though.

pigsDOfly · 14/05/2019 14:43

Obviously, a great many people love them so I think I must be lacking some sort of fancy doughnut gene, because the sight of them all sitting in their rows covered in that shiny, sugary icing crap just puts me completely off. They look horrible, sickly and artificial.

I don't care what they taste like inside, a good doughnut does not need icing or a shiny chocolate coating.

WeeMadArthur · 14/05/2019 14:50

If anyone is interested in trying them, if you download the KK app, you get a free introductory glazed ring doughnut ( I had mine today!)

MadSweeney · 14/05/2019 14:58

The KK in San Francisco has a window into the bakery so you can sit and watch them being made. Could have happily sat there all day 😁

Megs4x3 · 14/05/2019 15:45

I don't understand the homage for Krispy Kreme. Far too sweet and tasting of grease for me. Give me a Tim Hortons donut any day - and their coffee is pretty good too.

Megs4x3

I don't find it hard to understand- some people do have a sweet tooth. I am not a fan either, but it's easy to understand why some people like them.
I like lime pickle, jalapenos and stilton, I totally understand that some other people don't like these things.
Some people in my family love KK- OH, DD and my mother, DS and I don't like them.
Just the way things work.

bubbles1960 · 14/05/2019 16:00

How has nobody mentioned the Lotus Biscoff ones? They are my crack.
The glazed ones are the absolute best though.
They are so much better than way more expensive Crosstown Doughnuts or Doughnut Time.

buttermilkwaffles · 14/05/2019 16:04

YANBU, I like a good doughnut but KK are not a good doughnut, far too sweet and very average. Best doughnut I ever had was in Faro Portugal, still warm, light as a feather, sweet but not too sweet and filled with fresh custard cream which was also still warm (they only filled it when I ordered it). Cost - 1 euro.

KK used to use hydrogenated vegetable oil aka trans fats (pretty sure they no longer do though) which tells you that it's all about mass production using cheap ingredients, rather than quality...

Megs4x3 · 14/05/2019 16:23

@speakout I understand all that, but I was answering the op.

There's no point in the post if we all have the same opinion or, have different opinions but don't state them because 'everyone's different'. I stand by what I said - I don't think Krispy Kreme are a particularly good product.

(And I certainly wouldn't have done what my friends did, which was to queue for 6 hours to be sure of getting some on the day a new store opened local to them, so I'm well aware of 'different strokes for different folks'.)

Pgqio · 14/05/2019 16:29

They have horrible associations for me, namely shitbag SLT trying to pally up in the staff room by bringing variety boxes in.

The one in Gateshead Metrocentre bakes the doughnuts for the region. The kids used to love watching them on the conveyor when they were younger.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 14/05/2019 17:13

It"s not unusual here in Georgia to have a Krispy Kreme donut wedding cake -- especially at summer weddings.

3luckystars · 14/05/2019 18:11

Lidl do lovely puffball doughnuts here. Very light and not greasy. I hate doughnuts but I will eat them (if I have to Smile )

Ooh another Zombie thread! 🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️

Quasimodo22 · 14/05/2019 20:31

I resurrected this thread as i wanted to see if anybody else thought they were excessively priced. I googled Krispy kreme expensive and this topic was the first in the list.

CheeseFace · 14/05/2019 21:41

I just don't get the love for Krispy Kreme's, they're not NEARLY as nice as a good jam doughnut, the crumb is far too dense and they're overly sweet.

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/05/2019 21:13

OMG. I opened this thread thinking it sounded familiar and found that I actually started it - 8 years ago

LOL. You're like the poster who resurrected the travel pushchair thread. Her DC is probably GCSE age by now.

I remember getting a free Krispy Kreme donut in Harrods many many years ago when they first came to the UK. It was quite nice, but not worth the £££s they are asking for them and I think I actually prefer a seaside donut or three or a Sainsbury's or Greggs jam donut at a fraction of the cost. KK donuts with all their icings and fillings are just too sickly.

One of my happiest childhood memories was watching the automagic donut machine on day trips to the seaside. The machine dropped the batter into a sea of hot fat and the donuts floated along to a flippy paddle thing that flipped them over to fry the other side. the donuts then floated along some more to a second flippy paddle thing that fished the donuts out and dunked them into a pile of sugar, at which time they were ready for us to buy.

I think I thought that the display in the shop window was actually one of the designated seaside attractions. Simple pleasures.
