To wonder why anyone buys KrispyKreme doughnuts

Don't get me wrong, I am not averse to the odd doughnut from time to time. Plain, jam or apple filled, I am not picky. I also like the occasional cream cake when I really feel like treating myself. So, although I have never had one, I have no fundamental objection to the idea of a KrispyKreme doughnut other than the name (FGS why those 'K's and what is so hard about spelling 'cream' correctly - what sort of person would be more attracted to this product because of the awful spelling???) but that is a whole different issue.

What I cannot get over is the price of these things. The Tesco metro near where I work has recently started selling them, prominently displayed near the front of the shop. I kid you not when I tell you they are asking at least £1.50 each!! If you buy a box of 12 then it would set you back £9.45!!! Now if I walk to the back of the shop where the rest of the bakery items are I can buy jam doughnuts for 25p each or a bag of five for 60p.

Why on earth would anyone pay so much more for these "KrispyKreme" creations? They are only about the size of ordinary doughnuts and, apart from a bit of fancy glazing and a range of fillings, they do not look that amazing.

Is it me? Can someone enlighten me as to why anyone part with so much more dosh for a doughnut?

I eat vast quantities of fattening food. However, I cannot eat Krispy Kreme doughnuts. The two occasions on which I've tried one, I've actually had to spit it out because it was so horrible.

I just don't get it.

tryingtoleave · 06/05/2011 13:17

They aren't all that nice really - too sweet, too fatty tasting. Are they newish in uk? There was huge excitement when they started appearing in oz, but now people seem to be getting tired of them and branches are closing.

ObiWan · 06/05/2011 13:18

I don't like them at all.
I am very dissapointed in myself, because I really want to like them.
When people at work bring in a box (for birthdays and things) I like the look of them, and who wouldn't like the idea of a whole box of doughnuts... but I have never yet met a Krispy Kreme that I can eat more than a bite of.
They taste....weird, and have an odd texture.

DrunkenDaisy · 06/05/2011 13:18

They sound gross. I've never had a doughnut in my life; KrispyKreme or otherwise.

However, I think nothing of taking down a big bag of kettle chips on one sitting washed down with white wine.

Cyclops99 · 06/05/2011 13:19

if you think KK are yummy you have to trek to Canada and sample Tim Hortons doughnuts...........I'd swap my first born child for a Boston Creme or maple glazed doughnut...........

moondog · 06/05/2011 13:22

'gingerbread latte'?
wtf

There shoudl be a law against such obscene decadence.

Lonnie · 06/05/2011 13:24

Am I the only one reading this and now have a desperate NEEED for one of their maple syrup glazed ones??? (wonder if DH can grap some on the way home.. their custard ones are pretty good to and the glaced ones are delicious with coffee and oh the kid like the pink ones and th eones with the multi coloured sprinkles onn

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I NEED A KRISPY KREEMEEEEEE

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 06/05/2011 13:30

YANBU. I just don't think they're that nice. They just taste like old grease to me.

FoofffyShmoofffer · 06/05/2011 13:39

LadyClarice - Yes, they are 'Lardy'.

rookiemater · 06/05/2011 13:41

Don't talk to me about Krispy Kremes. I once went on an extended blind date in the US which involved driving from Boston to NY the "highlight" in NY was a trip to KK.
They are just donuts IMHO lard covered sugar, fat & carb, can't get excited about them but might eat half of one if someone brought them in to work. Now Hotel Chocolat chocolates - thats worth getting excited about

UKSky · 06/05/2011 13:42

Got to be the caramel filled one - definitely - and you will NEED to have 2, just to make sure they are that good Smile

Lainey1981 · 06/05/2011 13:44

The only ones i like are the plain glazed ones or raspberry jam ones. All others i've tried have been spat out quietly disposed of in the nearest bin. Weird fillings

working9while5 · 06/05/2011 13:47

The lemon meringue one is amazing.

I have them as a special treat on M1 trips to Manchester airport. And when they are custard filled, it's like the custard of KINGS.

florencedougal · 06/05/2011 13:47

agree with the OP, have always wanted to taste one but not at those prices!!

chrisonabike · 06/05/2011 13:50

good god they are gopping - I ate half of one once and my mouth tasted like a deep fat fryer for the rest of the day.

I have a theory they are just Dunkin' Doughnuts, rebranded. Am I right?

rookiemater · 06/05/2011 13:56

Do you know another American thing we are meant to like and is utterly disgusting - Hersheys chocolate is absolutely foul and tastes worse than dog chocolate ( I know this because my granny used to give me the dogs chocolate buttons)

LittleBoxes · 06/05/2011 13:56

Sorry, donuts

rookiemater · 06/05/2011 13:56

Arrff at thought of custard filled donut, yuk

LittleBoxes · 06/05/2011 13:56

Hershey chocolate tastes of sick.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 06/05/2011 13:58

Hersheys does taste of sick. No one does chocolate properly except the UK.

And no, KKs are not Dunkin Donuts rebranded. DDs were much nicer. RIP.

chrisonabike · 06/05/2011 13:58

LittleBoxes - yes! Hersheys choc has a distinct whiff of vom.

Tidey · 06/05/2011 14:01

Chocolate iced glazed KK doughnuts are looooovely. The glazed raspberry ones are good too. I agree they are far too expensive, but they are gorgeous.

HotchpotchHoney · 06/05/2011 14:04

you can still get dunkin donuts can;t you? thought i'd seen them in a service station recently.
KK are disgusting, I love doughnuts, cakes, and sweet things (do limit myself though just in case you were wondering) but kk are far too sweet and sickly. I was at the fine institute that is Thames Valley University in Slough Hmm when the new huge tesco opened with a kk bakery/cafe underneath it. We all traipsed over and brought several each, out of 6 of us only one person actually liked them. 3 of us didnt even finish the first one.
