To wonder why anyone buys KrispyKreme doughnuts

Don't get me wrong, I am not averse to the odd doughnut from time to time. Plain, jam or apple filled, I am not picky. I also like the occasional cream cake when I really feel like treating myself. So, although I have never had one, I have no fundamental objection to the idea of a KrispyKreme doughnut other than the name (FGS why those 'K's and what is so hard about spelling 'cream' correctly - what sort of person would be more attracted to this product because of the awful spelling???) but that is a whole different issue.

What I cannot get over is the price of these things. The Tesco metro near where I work has recently started selling them, prominently displayed near the front of the shop. I kid you not when I tell you they are asking at least £1.50 each!! If you buy a box of 12 then it would set you back £9.45!!! Now if I walk to the back of the shop where the rest of the bakery items are I can buy jam doughnuts for 25p each or a bag of five for 60p.

Why on earth would anyone pay so much more for these "KrispyKreme" creations? They are only about the size of ordinary doughnuts and, apart from a bit of fancy glazing and a range of fillings, they do not look that amazing.

Is it me? Can someone enlighten me as to why anyone part with so much more dosh for a doughnut?

I love them. Love, love, love them. Especially the chocolate glazed custard ones.

BUT.

The very best doughnut in the whole world comes from the little doughnut shop by McD's in Skegness. They are a freshly fried sugary fatfest that cannot be beaten.

LetThereBeRock · 06/05/2011 18:29

They're vastly overrated imho. They're much too sweet.

jasminetom · 06/05/2011 18:37

Funnily enough I am sitting here in Qatar with a 6 box of original glazed as I speak. i think it cost about 75p. Blame the cost of running a franchise in the UK, tax and bloody Tesco.

bigTillyMint · 06/05/2011 18:39

KK doughnuts are divine. I don't like regular doughnuts at all, but KK's are melt in the mouthSmile

icooksocks · 06/05/2011 18:46

I've never had a KK donut-I live in the middle of nowhere and no-one round here sells them. Fresh donuts from the seaside are great though-and as I live right by the sea I can treat myself regularly Grin. But 80p a donut Shock they are 5 for a quid round here

LetThereBeRock · 06/05/2011 18:49

Fresh fried ring doughnuts are the best.

Maybeitsbecause · 06/05/2011 18:50

They're divine, but you ca't beat a good bakery-fresh jam doughnut. Agree the fairground frie dones are bloody lovely, too. Christ, I want one now.

Blatherskite · 06/05/2011 18:53

We have a KK shop in the city center and my local Tesco has a selection delivered fresh every day. They are yum. Glazed Raspberry filled are my favourite or the ones that look like cogs (a sort of spikey ring)

They are scary on the trans fat front and I've been on a diet forver though so it's been a while since I've had one Sad

befuzzled · 06/05/2011 18:54

We do the calorie look up thing! Whatever you are thinking, double it! Truly frightening amount of calories. I like to imagine that the basic supermarket ones aren't as bad

wildstrawberryplace · 06/05/2011 19:03

Well I do buy them whenever I get a chance (fortunately not that often due to the fact we don't have an outlet in our town) but I do think that they are best when plain glazed and still warm or given 5 secs in the microwave if consuming them at home. It's the buttery, oozy, crisp on the outside and warm light meltiness of them inside that is addictive. That's the problem though; I have been known to sink a box of 12 over the course of a day, and end up feeling rough as a dog afterwards as my liver is turning to pate.

And as someone who knows about these things, I can confirm that they are indeed the crack cocaine of donuts.

Deaddei · 06/05/2011 19:26

They are vile.
The company are clients of dh's and when he was over there in the States, he said there were doughnuts at every meeting, piled randomly around the offices. No wonder the staff were huge.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/05/2011 19:28

I love them more than life itself. But thankfully for my bank account have none within a few hundred miles.

Quasimodo22 · 14/05/2019 12:47

And 8 years on my local morrisons sell them for £2.30 each

MonnieMoo · 14/05/2019 12:50

I felt much the same until I tried one. Trust me when I say they are not your average donut.. and I bloody love a freshly made jam doughnut! They’re worlds apart and absolutely drool worthy.

MonnieMoo · 14/05/2019 12:50

Oops. I didn’t realise how old this was!

ChocChocButtons · 14/05/2019 12:52

Because their delicious???

steff13 · 14/05/2019 12:55

Oh my gosh, there's a Krispy Kreme factory near our house. I went on a field trip with my sons' day camp. We got to watch the whole process, then we each got to take home a dozen donuts. They were still warm from the line. I thought they were good from the store, but when they're still warm and soft, they're so good. It was the best field trip ever. Way better than the farm where I got bitten by a goat.

steff13 · 14/05/2019 12:55

Oh my gosh, I didn't notice the date. Blush

PookieDo · 14/05/2019 12:57

This is really weird as I was just talking about them and this appeared!

Saavhi · 14/05/2019 13:04

K is used a lot in branding as the letter has some very unique characteristics that lend itself well to brand names- it's quite interesting.

I have never been able to turn down an original glazed.

roses2 · 14/05/2019 13:10

I used to love Krispy Kreme. That was until I discovered Doughnut Time. doughnuttime.co.uk/. They are £5 each but OMG they are amazing!

longwayoff · 14/05/2019 13:10

I've never had a KK doughnut, one mouthful and I'd be lost, yearning for them daily. Get thee behind me Satan.

Yabbers · 14/05/2019 13:16

I love a donut. But KK donuts are hideous. Synthetic flavourings, bland dough. Yeuch!

Yabbers · 14/05/2019 13:18

@steff13. Me neither. It usually warns us.
