To wonder why anyone buys KrispyKreme doughnuts

Don't get me wrong, I am not averse to the odd doughnut from time to time. Plain, jam or apple filled, I am not picky. I also like the occasional cream cake when I really feel like treating myself. So, although I have never had one, I have no fundamental objection to the idea of a KrispyKreme doughnut other than the name (FGS why those 'K's and what is so hard about spelling 'cream' correctly - what sort of person would be more attracted to this product because of the awful spelling???) but that is a whole different issue.

What I cannot get over is the price of these things. The Tesco metro near where I work has recently started selling them, prominently displayed near the front of the shop. I kid you not when I tell you they are asking at least £1.50 each!! If you buy a box of 12 then it would set you back £9.45!!! Now if I walk to the back of the shop where the rest of the bakery items are I can buy jam doughnuts for 25p each or a bag of five for 60p.

Why on earth would anyone pay so much more for these "KrispyKreme" creations? They are only about the size of ordinary doughnuts and, apart from a bit of fancy glazing and a range of fillings, they do not look that amazing.

Is it me? Can someone enlighten me as to why anyone part with so much more dosh for a doughnut?

The best doughnuts are the freshly cooked ones that you get hot, in a paper bag, at the seaside.

Proper english jam doughnuts, all soft and squidgy and covered in real sugar, are pretty gorgeous too.

Unfortunately doughnuts seem to be morphing into a giant, very solid, jam-filled brick with icing sugar - they are now the only sort available in our local bakeries.

KK beat the brick-like ones hands down...but can't touch an old-fashioned doughnut IMO.

YANBU. They look and smell bloody horrible. And at nearly £2 for one doughnut I can't believe people buy them. But the KK cafe at Tesco is always packed, god knows why! Give me jam doughnuts from a proper bakery or a hot, freshly made doughnut smothered in sugar (the type you get at fairs and theme parks) any day.

I don't get it either - a friend of mine buys them in boxfulls as a regular thing. Her DD has one for breakfast each day Hmm

We went up skating one morning and she brought the box along. I said we'd never tried them. She said how lovely they were, delicious, etc, and gave us one each like casting pearls before swine (we are very much the poor relation).

And, yes, it was OK. A bit sweet but the glaze was quite nice. But, seriously, nearly a tenner for them? I think they saw her coming, as my mum would say!

Mmmm KrispyKremes. The nearest places to me that sells them is Selfridges in Birmingham and that's a good 3/4 an hour drive away. Good job really because I'd be fat if they sold them in my town.

Could murder a caramel dreamcake right now..

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 06/05/2011 14:34

Because they are light as air and if you eat them standing up they have no calories. Grin

tyler80 · 06/05/2011 14:35

Hersheys chocolate tastes of vomit because it contains butyric acid which is also found in vomit!

BeattieBow · 06/05/2011 14:35

I think they're vile too. Too sweet, full of crap and about a million calories each (not worth it unless delicious imo).

I prefer the old fashioned ring donuts you can get from the fair [old gimmer emoticon]

YANBU
They have a very artificial taste, yuk. Waste of money plus guilt plus fat plus E-numbers.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 06/05/2011 14:56

Beattie, me too! Or in my case the agricultural fair I used to get taken to as a kid. Hot hot hot and dipped in crunchy sugar, eaten out of a paper bag.

Shaxx · 06/05/2011 15:01

I think they are revolting. They're just far too sugary and there's no depth of flavour. I hate them.
I agree with fresh proper doughnuts being absolutely delicious.

NotJustKangaskhan · 06/05/2011 15:32

I bought them as a homesick American ex-pat, I saw them during a trip in Birmingham and they made me feel all nostalgic. Nostalgia never tastes as good as you think though and they've pretty much gotten rid of all the classic flavours, so I don't bother much anymore.

wotss · 06/05/2011 15:54

I have a really sweet tooth but they taste a bit artificial to me, and repeat on me in a greasy kind of way for ages afterwards. (Ordinary cheap doughnuts do this too tbf).

It's not the lardy-ness that spoils them - Fooffyshmoofffler's reminded me that I love proper Lardy Cake - but I think it's probably something to do with the fat that's used.

Dozer · 06/05/2011 16:06

Love'em, pure sugar/fat/white-carb rush!

A (thin) woman in our office always looks up the calorie content on the internet when anyone brings them in (station near work sells boxes, lethal!), thus spoiling the communal moment a bit.

Dozer · 06/05/2011 16:07

Probably trans fat!

Don't care, love'em.

sayanything · 06/05/2011 16:11

I love them. Looooooove them.
Best to buy them in the US. We stopped by a KK somewhere in Pennsylvania. Asked for half a dozen glazed, the guy said that it would work out cheaper if we got a dozen. We said fine, let's get a dozen and he gives us a massive box of 24 because it's "Buy a dozen get one free."
I had stomach cramps, but it was worth it.

squashycreech · 06/05/2011 16:16

Ugh, they are horrid! Taste of nothing but chemicals.

Tidey · 06/05/2011 16:16

I think they're 200-300 cals each, depending on whether they're a ring doughnut or one custard or cream in the middle. Not that bad really, as a very occasional treat. Luckily I don't live anywhere near a branch of KK, or even a Tesco that sells them or I'd be fifty stone and have no teeth.

schroeder · 06/05/2011 16:22

Am still in awe of animula's rhapsodic ode to the Krispy Kreme. Smile

hocuspontas · 06/05/2011 16:38

Not keen on any of them apart fom the simple glazed ones. I have noticed though after about 4 or 5 they leave a horrible taste on the roof of my mouth. Agree that the seaside ones are the best although I was horrified at the prices at Cromer a couple of weeks ago. Something like 80p each.

5Foot5 · 06/05/2011 17:00

rookiemater, Littleboxes, LadyClarice and others: Thank goodness it is not just me!

Where I used to work someone brought back a bag of mini Hershey bars after a business trip and left them in the kitchen for people to help themselves. I tried one and ended up spitting it out because it definitely tasted of sick. I thought maybe it had gone off but apparently not.

I am in a quandary now since the balance on Krispy Kremes seems to be swinging the other way. I like sweet things but I don't like sickly sweet. DH is more of a cheese man. Maybe I will just stick to the Friday treat of 5 jam doughnuts for 60p and save the Krispy Kreme experiment for another time when it can be carried out in a controlled fashion with someone else paying
