To wonder why anyone buys KrispyKreme doughnuts

Don't get me wrong, I am not averse to the odd doughnut from time to time. Plain, jam or apple filled, I am not picky. I also like the occasional cream cake when I really feel like treating myself. So, although I have never had one, I have no fundamental objection to the idea of a KrispyKreme doughnut other than the name (FGS why those 'K's and what is so hard about spelling 'cream' correctly - what sort of person would be more attracted to this product because of the awful spelling???) but that is a whole different issue.

What I cannot get over is the price of these things. The Tesco metro near where I work has recently started selling them, prominently displayed near the front of the shop. I kid you not when I tell you they are asking at least £1.50 each!! If you buy a box of 12 then it would set you back £9.45!!! Now if I walk to the back of the shop where the rest of the bakery items are I can buy jam doughnuts for 25p each or a bag of five for 60p.

Why on earth would anyone pay so much more for these "KrispyKreme" creations? They are only about the size of ordinary doughnuts and, apart from a bit of fancy glazing and a range of fillings, they do not look that amazing.

Is it me? Can someone enlighten me as to why anyone part with so much more dosh for a doughnut?

OP YABVVVU

Try chocolate dreamcake, lemon meringue.

just out of interest, what price would you consider okay for a piece of cake?

I don't really do takeaway anything, but Krispy Kreme is the rare exception.

viques · 14/05/2019 13:23

You and me both OP. I will eat them if they are there and someone else has paid for them, but buy them? ESpecially not out of those display cabinets that are open to every germy set of fingers and spotty cough in the neighbourhood.

An ex colleague told me that she regularly goes past a local KK factory outlet on her way home on a Saturday night, apparently people queue up in their cars to buy them fresh off the production line. Other people's lives eh?

viques · 14/05/2019 13:25

She goes home via , not past.

Gruzinkerbell1 · 14/05/2019 13:27

Because they’re the dogs bollocks of doughnuts. You can’t compare them to any old crappy doughnut.

My fave is the one with chocolate icing and sprinkles 🍩

ladybee28 · 14/05/2019 13:27

Oh gosh OP, just seen your update – please don't delay it, eat one now!

Just so we can hear your verdict!

definitely not overinvested in this

3luckystars · 14/05/2019 13:28

I had seen these on the tv.

When I went to America I went straight off to buy one. It was filled with stuff like the inside of a creme egg. Revolting.

That was a long time ago but it has stayed with me.

ladybee28 · 14/05/2019 13:28

Also, friend of mine was a police officer and she told me that when she qualified she was given a discount card for Krispy Kremes!

Literally free doughnuts for coppers... amazing!

shamelesshackney · 14/05/2019 13:30

I bought DD some donuts from Crosstown yesterday and they were amazing. So bloody expensive though - £3.75 a pop! Very big SATS treat.

plominoagain · 14/05/2019 13:31

Really ? I wish I had one of those - they’re the currency of fines at work .

Personally I prefer the old fashioned jam and sugar variety , these are just far too sweet even for me .

ReadWriteDraw · 14/05/2019 13:32

Horrid horrid things. Synthetic tat that leaves you mouth like the inside of a frying pan. And I speak as a woman who loves a doughnut and a cake!

5foot5 · 14/05/2019 13:33

OMG. I opened this thread thinking it sounded familiar and found that I actually started it - 8 years ago!!

And I confess I have still not tried a KK donut. I like cake but I don't like sickly sweet things. I tend not to like cup cakes wit thick layers of icing for the same reason. Give me a nice scone or a slice of Victoria sponge any day. A normal size slice - not one of these things with about six rainbow coloured layers that are about 8 inches thick.

We bought a box of 12 last week- didn’t last until evening! That’s it until the next holiday- always a ‘on our way home’ treat we pick up!

Beaubird83 · 14/05/2019 13:35

Chocolate glazed custard filled are my favourites. I agree they’re expensive, but I’m not buying them daily, maybe one once or twice a month so it’s okay 👌

Kedgeree · 14/05/2019 13:35

They are beyond delicious and I'm glad they're more expensive than gold because the price means I never buy them, thus saving money and calories Grin.

Bluerussian · 14/05/2019 13:37

Never heard of them.

3luckystars · 14/05/2019 13:38

Well you can't say that any more now.

midsomermurderess · 14/05/2019 13:41

I think they're horrible. Overpoweringly sweet and cloying.

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/05/2019 13:44

Are they newish in uk?

No, they've been around a decade or so. But I suspect a lot of people didn't have 'access' to them until Tesco started selling them rather than it just being standalone shops.

When they first arrived in London, people used to but them all the time in our Canary Wharf office when it was birthdays etc. They're so sweet though that we had to introduce an 'informal' ban on combining Krispy Kreme and Starbucks as the caffeine-sugar combo meant that one particularly contentious meeting got very shouty. But that was a good 10ish years ago. These days I don't see anyone at work drinking Starbucks (apart from visiting Americans) as people are a lot more picky about their coffee nor do I see any Krispy Kreme. They've definitely had their day where I work/live. When people want a treat, it tends to be cinnamon rolls and coffee from Ole & Steen. Crosstown and various other niche brands are selling doughnuts and they're much nicer than Krispy Kreme - but also twice the price!

speakout · 14/05/2019 13:46

People buy them because they enjoy them and can afford them.

I buy a box of 12 every 3 months or so, they are not my favourite, ( I don't have a huge sweet tooth) but my family love them

If you've never tried one you can't judge IMO

SignedUpJust4This · 14/05/2019 13:58

They are yucky 🤮

LonelyTiredandLow · 14/05/2019 13:59

Sorry, wrong thread Blush

Elphame · 14/05/2019 14:01

I had one when they first came to the UK. It was beyond vile. Tasted of nothing but sugar; I couldn't finish it.

I really don't understand the appeal.

KrispyKreme came to Ireland and there was chaos... Had to close down the 24hour drive-thru because of noise!
