they are 21/22, young girls, with the eyes of the world on them. I am horrified at the generally vicious comments about how they looked at the wedding. Leave them alone for goodness sake. Their mother is generally vilified and those girls have to live with that - not least at this wedding where she was notable by her lack of invitation, for whatever reason. How was your confidence when you were 21/22? Probably not that hot. HOw was your fashions sense at that age? Probably not that hot. Did you listen to any advice/advisors at that age? PROBABLY NOT.

fwiw I think they looked great - Eugenie's outfit was lovely and it suited her. Beatrice's coat didn't fit that well but the hat was fab and imo their outfits were a mature and respectful choice.

But I'm a fashion designer, so what would I know Biscuit

Clegg's wife looked as if she'd escaped from a Flamenco lesson in a dusty village hall somewhere.

worraliberty · 30/04/2011 11:00

This thread is so funny!

I'm sure Beatrice and Eugenie will be logging into MN, reading the comments on their silly outfits and crying into their Earl Grey Hmm

So we can only post opinions on famous people now if they're positive and arse kissy?

Best you jump on the other threads and start sticking up for Dave and Vikky Beckham and all the others being slagged off Saint Springydaffs

SummerRain · 30/04/2011 11:02

I was a mother of two at 22 as well and would never in a million years have turned up to a family event looking like that!

It's one thing a child picking a rotten outfit and having to to be dissuaded but once a girl/woman is old enough to dress herself she should have been instilled with the common sense to be able to to look in a mirror and see that her hair need brushing and that a quilt with bows on it does not flatter her shape or age. And if she lacks that common sense there should be someone in her life who's honest enough to say 'You're a beautiful girl but that outfit/hat doesn't show it'

sausagesandmarmelade · 30/04/2011 11:03

LOL re the Colonel's comments! Grin

thefirstMrsDeVere · 30/04/2011 11:03

I love fashion.
I follow it from afar because I know longer have any need to dress up.

But I know one thing - 'fashion designers' are not best known for their judgement of what real people think about clothes.

If they did we wouldnt have the genius of Viv Westwood and Alexanda McQueen would never have progressed past his bumsters.

Look at poor, mad, John Galliano the antisemetic pirate.

I mean, really ...

Mamaz0n · 30/04/2011 11:04

I think they are both very attractive, I think they are often forgotten about in terms of the royal family, I think they wanted to stand out amongst a congregation of almost 2000.

They did just that.

The outfits were not what I would have chosen but then I am fairly sure Mn would rip me to shreds over some of my most favoured ensambles too.

when you attend the biggest wedding for 3 decades you can chose your own outfit and come ask us what we think, until then leave the poor mares alone.

ZacharyQuack · 30/04/2011 11:08

But it's not about a good "fashion sense", it's about style and knowing what suits you, which is a totally different thing to knowing about what's in fashion. That was probably where B&E went wrong, they were trying to be fashionable without really getting much advice on style.

Eugenie needs to look at Nigella, Christina Hendricks (? the hot one in Mad Men), young Sophia Loren, Marilyn Munroe to get an idea of what will look good on her. Beatrice needs to realise that not everyone can carry off avant garde. She's no SWINTON*

(* gofugyourself reference).

breathing · 30/04/2011 11:10

I have a piccie of the outfits in my newspaper and lose the hat and the apricotish one is lovely

meditrina · 30/04/2011 11:11

The Ugly Sister comment was unkind, because those fairytale characters were known as archetypes of nastiness - it's not a neutral comment on their appearance.

I didn't like their outfits - but then again a number of Royals have worn bizarre outfits at public occasions (think of the Princess Royal a while back), but I think chuntering when weird choices are made has become almost a part of tradition. It didn't help that the York Princesses are blessed with large busts for their frames, and easily look chunky - they were sitting right behind the Queen, and the solid bustline really didn't show to advantage.

Bucharest · 30/04/2011 11:15

I think they were dressed more like what we traditionally expect the royals to dress like, er, a bit out of touch and what-the-feck-is-she-wearing....bit like Princess Anne and all those duchesses that you don't hear much about these days.
Maybe we've become used to royals dressing for fashion's sake (after Diana, and now Kate) that we've forgotten that they used to all look a bit like Beatrice and Eugenie yesterday.

Loving the righteous indignation. Especially given how vile MNers have been to other MNers this week. That's OK then, but not if the person is famous? HmmHow very sycophantic.

Pagwatch · 30/04/2011 11:15

I have a very nice John Galliano dress.
Antisemitic pirate he may be but still was a purveyor of nice frocks.
When I am asked about it now I will have to lie. I can't not wear it - it is too lovely. Perhaps I could get a disclaimer sewn in the hem

Roberto Cavalli however makes almost every woman look like a blind hooker who fell over in claires accessories.
Designers do not always have good taste. Because people with bad taste still want to spend lots of money on clothes.

I make my own clothes sometimes. And I can stitch the crotch of a pair of trousers in under 5 minutes. I know shit.

SoupDragon · 30/04/2011 11:16

There is no getting away from the fact that Eugenie's dress was shit and didn't fit or flatter and Beatrice's hat was straight off Lady Gaga's head.

Both did look like pantomime costumes.

Mamaz0n · 30/04/2011 11:18

bucharest - where? I seemed to have missed such bitchy hypocrisy

MayBankHoliday · 30/04/2011 11:22

YANBU. They were there to support William and Kate on their wedding day, not to take part in a catwalk show. They both seem like happy, friendly young women and it doesn't really matter what they wear.

Lilmeena · 30/04/2011 11:23

I think they're both very attractive actually ( as is their mother ) and anyone who calls them 'ugly' really needs to get out more ( or there's some jealousy issues going on ) - they're certainly not ugly by any stretch of the imagination, and even if they were - so what? Is it a crime to not be stunningly attractive? - Wearing a bad choice designer doesn't change your face or you as a person.
(( VW is not a brilliant designer ( imo ) and should have retired when punk died out - - just to add ))

So op; YANBU

thefirstMrsDeVere · 30/04/2011 11:23

Thats the point though pag

He does make lovely frocks Envy but he got to that point with wild experimentation and making stuff that only little girls that are shaped like little boys can wear.

I had a wonderful VW outfit. My God the work was genius, the way it was put together (but I am the sort of person who reads books about couture sewing methods and has a little cry).

But she was laughed off tv for her little bustle skirts.

I used to have a JG (only diffusion) it was luverly. I doubt I could button it up now though. I have a pair of his wedged sneakers in the loft. I found them in a car boot sale in the early 90s. They have great big rubber soles and give me electric shocks if i wear them for too long. Grin

nothingnatural · 30/04/2011 11:23

Oh c'mon everyone they were GREAT.

Brilliantly Bat-Shit crazy Ijustdon'tgivearatsarseasI'mfuckingloaded brilliant.

It cheers us commoners reet up to see those born with such vast wealth and privilidge (fuck, can't spell) coming out and making a tit of themselves.

activate · 30/04/2011 11:29

since when has 21 and 22 become 'young girls'

they are adults

they do not deserve special dispensation for having more money than sense and being young, as older people don't either

I don't like fashion as it makes people look like twats ie Beatrice and Eugenie (and IMO Clegg's missus) at the Royal Wedding

Pagwatch · 30/04/2011 11:31

Grin at shocking shoes.
Yeah, you're right MrsDV.
They all get a little batty.

I love west wood. I want a Sunday dress . But I am without décolletage. Just does not work

Newgolddream · 30/04/2011 11:31

"ILoveTIFFANY - teletubbies lequeen???
why so nasty??
since when were the teletubbies blue or beige?"

I think the reference is to the stupid reindeer antler hat that Bea wore, resembling the wee aerial things the Teletubbies have on their heads rather than anything else about their appearance.

Mamaz0n · 30/04/2011 11:32

I adore Westwood. she really is batshit crazy yet genius all rolled into one.

sadly i am far too tall and far too fat for any of it.

Morloth · 30/04/2011 11:35

I thought their dresses were fine, it was just the hat and teletubbie does sum it up nicely.

DS1 and I were playing 'which is the silliest hat', we had settled on the blue one that came down between the woman's eyes (not sure who she was, but it must have effected her vision), but I have to say the beige antlers trumped all the others we saw.

I thought the wedding cake, one of the women in the crowd had on was quite stylish though.

VW was good in her heyday - which was 30 years ago.
