pack it in with the vicious sniping about beatrice and eugenie

they are 21/22, young girls, with the eyes of the world on them. I am horrified at the generally vicious comments about how they looked at the wedding. Leave them alone for goodness sake. Their mother is generally vilified and those girls have to live with that - not least at this wedding where she was notable by her lack of invitation, for whatever reason. How was your confidence when you were 21/22? Probably not that hot. HOw was your fashions sense at that age? Probably not that hot. Did you listen to any advice/advisors at that age? PROBABLY NOT.

fwiw I think they looked great - Eugenie's outfit was lovely and it suited her. Beatrice's coat didn't fit that well but the hat was fab and imo their outfits were a mature and respectful choice.

But I'm a fashion designer, so what would I know Biscuit

Now that would have been a much more acceptable solution for them to be edgy and leading the fashion world morloth, a good pair of sensible, sturdy and very comfortable docs Grin

Fuck that you've got to cripple yourself with pain wearing heels.

And they could have been colour coordinated to blend tasetefully with their dresses.

Sorry, expat , not just being polite. :) I don't like the hat necessarily, but I do think it's strangely fascinating. That was her intention, perhaps? :)

hairfullofsnakes · 30/04/2011 05:49

What annieonamapleleaf and scottishmummy said!

Animation · 30/04/2011 06:16

Springdaffs is right - comments have been getting way too personal and mean. I didn't particularly like Beatrice's hat myself but to be honest they don't strike me as girls who are very comforfortable with themselves. Those hats are like a compensation to me. The fact that their mum has been the long running scapegoat of the Royal Family won't help. As for Will and Harry Ferge was a good support to their mum in her time - and did Diana far more good than Camilla and most of the Royals,

aurynne · 30/04/2011 06:43

I am actually quite sure that the hat was their mum's idea as a way to still have a presence there... As in "I may very well not go, but by God they will be talking about something I was responsible for. And Bea, for fuck's sake, stop whining, if you just duck a bit, the hat won't stick into the car roof again."

Tee2072 · 30/04/2011 07:50

I think at 21/22 they are certainly old enough to know they looked ridiculous. And that's what that hat was. Ridiculous.

Forget ugly, ill fitting or whatever else you want to say.

If I had been there I would have burst out laughing in her face at how absolutely silly she looked. And probably said 'It's a joke, right? Your real hat got soiled at the last minute?'

Of course, I also think it was a protest to their mum not being invited. In some weird way. Making themselves stand out and look ugly in protest.

But the only person I am a sycophant to is Hecate. Wink

trumpton · 30/04/2011 08:03

My MIL (87) said the hat was probably a radio antenna broadcasting the service to the girls' Mother. But I think there was prably a mini-cam in there as well for full coverage.

Nothing against the girls but My eyes! my eyes !

Animation · 30/04/2011 08:09

If the hats were a protest to their mum not being invited then about time, because their dad was never going to step in on their behalf. They've had to attend a bunch of functions throughout their childhood without their mum - and there was NEVER any need for that. Andrew has never had another partner as such that could have made the situation awkward. Kids need their mums basically - and their mum has always been shunned - and it can't have done these girls' self esteem any good.

exoticfruits · 30/04/2011 08:09

They have the money and they must be able to have access to advice. If they insist on wearing 'pantomine' outfits in the public eye they have to take the flack.
It is easy to do something about it if they don't like it-get style advice!
Because they are so young they can easily turn it around.

Bloodymary · 30/04/2011 08:11

The beige hat was truly hideous, didnt even notice her sisters as I couldnt tear my eyes away from the beige 'creation'.

exoticfruits · 30/04/2011 08:13

You think that they would dress differently with their mother there Animation?! I would bet that she helped choose the outfits in the first place.Perhaps she was getting her own back!! However I doubt it as she seems a good mother in that her heart is in the right place.(not one to sacrifice them to the media in revenge!)

Deuce · 30/04/2011 08:17

Springdaffs, what do you do for a living? I don't believe you have mentioned it twice

Animation · 30/04/2011 08:19

Exoticfruits - I've no idea if they would have dressed any differently. Tee suggested the hats might be a protest - could well be - they might be annoyed that their mum doesn't get an invite.

I agree that she seems a good mother with her heart in the right place and I should imagine that her girls feel very protective of her.

Andrew and Fergie are supposed to be good friends still so why doesn't she get an invite?

WolfShapedBullet · 30/04/2011 08:23

I had a little bit of input on how my wedding dress looked, worked with the dressmaker on neckline, skirt ideas etc, and I've got an 'A' level in art.

Heavens! Does that make me a 'fashion designer' and leading authority in defending truly naff 'pieces' (see got my designer speak down to a pat) too?

Lack of confidence (in my opinion) does not lead you to wear such Look At Meeeee, stand out outfits. When I was younger and self conscious I would wear clothes that helped me to blend in, not pretzels and curtains.

P.s, Fashion designer does not automatically equate to good taste. Look at any catwalk.

exoticfruits · 30/04/2011 08:28

I don't think that I would want exes at my wedding-not unless they were still a great personal friend.
I really don't think the outfits were a protest-I imagine they thought they looked good and everyone was too polite to say differently.

If someone had bought the outfit, loved it and tried it to ask my opinion I would be stumped at how to respond. I'm not at all sure that I could be truthful, I think I would be so tactful they simply wouldn't get it! (except on MN of course when you can give the truth!)

exoticfruits · 30/04/2011 08:30

Very true WolfShapedBullet!

razzlebathbone · 30/04/2011 08:35

I think some credit should be given to Prince Philip for not trying to shoot the stag.

Tee2072 · 30/04/2011 08:38

I also would like to point out that I highly doubt either of them have self-esteem issues.

They have been told, from birth, how wonderful and special they are. How they are Princesses. How everyone else (except the Queen and their older cousins) are beneath them.

Lack of self confidence did not lead to those hates. Arrogance did.

MaryAnnSingleton · 30/04/2011 08:50

not criticising them physically, just their appalling dress sense -Eugenie's outfit was totally awful and wrong - I shudder to think what your designs are like op

Let's face it- even places such as bon marche and peacocks have 'fashion designers'.

sausagesandmarmelade · 30/04/2011 08:58

You're a fashion designer and you thought their outfits were fab?

Beatrice's hat was just AWFUL...and Eugenie's outfit did nothing for her...it looked frumpy and out-dated. Just terrible.
And they were designer outfits. They were very badly advised....someone should have told them.

We are allowed an opinion....they are in the public eye and should be able to take it.

Incidentally, on the internet they are labelled best and worst dressed...
