AlOuise....I blame my sources (front page of the day's tabloid NOTW).

A google search found a far more modest quote of £40 grand...

Nothing to the Middletons who are indeed multi millionnaires who inherited rather a lot.

overthesea · 01/05/2011 18:58

My wedding cost over £50k 12 years ago - there is no way on earth that wedding did.

Also, I know someone who worked for the Middletons and they don't make anything like the figures bandied about in the papers. Around Reading it is not at all uncommon for houses to be worth over well over £1million (doesn't mean they were bought for that).

I heard from a good source that the family (and I mean the wider family) jointly used monies recently inherited from her grandfather.

diddl · 01/05/2011 19:04

So far, I have seen that the Middletons paid 250,000GBP, the dress 40,000GBP.

And that they bought the house for 778,000GBP.

oohlaalaa · 01/05/2011 19:06

overthesea - never been able to understand how the Middletons have so much money - for holidays in mustique, marlborough college, shooting weekends, haute couture, skiing.

overthesea · 01/05/2011 19:12

oohlaalaa I agree with you. But I can tell you it isn't from the business.

In fairness plenty of people from that generation (who live down there) do much the same. My mum and dad are always swanning about and have three substantial homes (inc one abroad) - yet they started out middle, middle class. All their friends are the same. They all laugh when the Middletons are described as rich.

They're just the middleclass babyboomers who made loads of money in property, had professional jobs. and inherited from parents.

SybilBeddows · 01/05/2011 19:20

I thought Marlborough was from the family educational trust.

I read something today (Sunday Times I think, or maybe Moneyweek) that said their business is now estimated to be worth £30 million, but that's because of the value added to the brand by their royal family links.

overthesea · 01/05/2011 19:23

Yeh I bet it is worth considerably more now because of the Royal Connections but £30million for a company that send out 99p favours - I don't think so. At the end of the day most people buy their stuff based on price and couldn't care less whether it is run by the Middletons.

My friend however, says that James has always been boasting about how rich he is going to be and how he is the next Richard Branson which makes them all snigger behind his back.

Ormirian · 01/05/2011 19:37

Not read the rest of the thread but yes, it was lovely. much better than than the overinflated meringue that Diana wore.

oohlaalaa · 01/05/2011 19:51

overthesea - has your friend ever seen Kate do any work for the business?

My parents are middle class, have a nice property, inherited some money, and have an income of about 100k a year.

They pay a lot of tax and could never afford for us to socialise with aristocracy, buy a flat in london, buy me a fancy car, have lavish holidays, expensive jewels and clothes etc.

overthesea · 01/05/2011 20:47

This was a year or so ago - she did a bit from what I understand (not on the website though as has been reported) but I was told she would drop everything the second William was free or needed her - so she wasn't there v often. This was v much encouraged by the family.

oohlaalaa · 01/05/2011 21:24

No surprises at Kate dropping everything. Just amazes me the money the Middletons seem to have. I bet James isnt cheap to keep.

rachie2011 · 01/05/2011 22:48

she looked stunning such a pretty lady! big congrats to will and kate xxx

southofthethames · 01/05/2011 23:12

diddl - impressed by all this info you have!

southofthethames · 01/05/2011 23:16

Marks for the dress - 9 out of 10. Beautiful, elegant, wonderfully made as befits the British needlework staff and the international artisans at the Alexander McQueen company. Just didn't give it 10 because I thought it was a bit too understated for a Royal wedding; then again, it is the bride's prerogative as to what she wants to wear. If she wanted a plain, undecorated dress from New Look that is her choice too! (wouldn't be popular but it would be her choice!)

southofthethames · 01/05/2011 23:21

Pippa Middleton's dress also designed by Sarah Burton. Since someone has mentioned men's outfits - er, I don't like the cap on Prince William even if it's the standard uniform from his job. (Kind of makes him look like the driver and not the groom, when he was in the carriage). Should have left it off, or put it on his lap.

vacant · 01/05/2011 23:34

5, Should have worn a see through one :)

I think the dress she had on the following day was nice..

mousymouse · 02/05/2011 07:26

3 for williams uniform.
I just don't get that the royals so often marry in their "work" uniform. That is just not right. Then I should have married in a chanel business suit...

HRHCaveMum · 02/05/2011 07:58

William did not marry in his "work uniform". He is in the RAF, he was wearing the No1s for the Irish Guards, for whom he is Colonel in Chief.

Many people in the RAF, DH included, are disappointed he did not marry in his RAF No1s, it is his job after all. There is a lot of rivalry between the Forces and he will get a lot of stick from his colleagues at work tomorrow!

exoticfruits · 02/05/2011 08:31

I am still laughing at the thought he could work in that elaborate dress uniform!!!

hf128219 · 02/05/2011 08:31

But the RAF uniform is dreadful - sorry!!!

exoticfruits · 02/05/2011 08:32

The one he had on made muchbetter photos than the RAF one.

mousymouse · 02/05/2011 08:40

I know it is the dress uniform, but from his work anyway.
it would be like myself in an expensive version of what I wear to the office everyday. which would be silly (IMO).
a wedding is a private (well in therory) occasion and all the military ranks don't really play into that.
I really wouldn't have married dh if he wore a chique lab coat on our wedding day :)

HRHCaveMum · 02/05/2011 08:41

I agree the RAF No1s are the least impressive of the lot, but DH looked perfectly scrummy in them in our wedding photos Grin

HRHCaveMum · 02/05/2011 08:43

Prince William does not work for the Irish Guards! He is in the RAF, therefore what he wore for his wedding was not from his job!
You'll get a lot of very upset military wives posting if you try to lump the Army, Navy and RAF together you know Wink

Sidge · 02/05/2011 09:05

My DH wore his No1s for our wedding and looked bloody gorgeous.

Formal military uniform is hardly 'workwear', I wouldn't have wanted him to wear his ovies for our wedding Wink
