I think the interesting thing about the (lovely) dress is the statement it was making.
It said she was restrained, modest, conservative, traditional, but had no objection to her role as a clothes horse.
It was a message to the Queen: 'Don't worry your Maj, I promise I will behave myself and not be a showy attention-seeker like your DILs.'

GitAwfMayLend · 30/04/2011 18:05

Why am I so opinionated about wedding attire? I have never even been married

DP is not going to be able to get away with marrying me in Cirencester register office now, oh no deary.

I want trumpets, choirboys, superman music at the end, and a great big frock

SybilBeddows · 30/04/2011 18:07

according to someone on another thread you will get choirboys and girls if you borrow the choir from Gloucester Cathedral.

SybilBeddows · 30/04/2011 18:08

ThomasBodley - aww, don't disappoint me! I was liking the image of Chelsy doing high-powered law-type things into the small hours then flinging on a few rags for this wedding thing she had to go to.

diddl · 30/04/2011 18:09

I agree that strapless wedding dresses are awful.

TBH I think that most strapless dresses are.

Surprised Kate went for strapless for the evening do.

nightcat · 30/04/2011 18:10

With you sausage & marm, the veil looked too flat and almost stretchy and almost looked off white? Does that mean the fashion has gone a full circle now with dresses tho - mine was v similar lace-wise at the top (diff skirt bit) in 80s.
As for veil and not only, nothing wrong with copying historic look but always nice to add a modern twist? Maybe if it didn't look off-white or stretchy the flatness wouldn't have been so noticeable.

GitAwfMayLend · 30/04/2011 18:10

Yes - that was me (on feminist thread). They were saying that why do choirs not have girls in, I said that Gloucester cathedral choir does have girls.

Now that I have sung their praises on mumsnet d'you reckon they will give me a free wedding?

Ryoko · 30/04/2011 18:13

In regards to the original question in........question my worthless opinion is that the over priced dress was horrible, I can't stand stupid lace sleeve things it looks like your wearing a pair of net curtains and the trail was WAY too long, -10/10 it looked like some grandmother hand me down thing.

Al0uiseG · 30/04/2011 18:13

Fellatio, go and get ready! I'm very tempted to wear a White lace dress, do you dare me :o

sausagesandmarmelade · 30/04/2011 18:18

Actually (sniffs) ones wedding dress was a strapless Ian Stewart number (last year) with fitted bodice...and I for one thought it was gorgeous (but then I am biased I suppose).

Was teamed with long silk opera gloves and a lace (yes lace) bolero jacket...to add a touch of modesty in the church.

diddl · 30/04/2011 18:18

"It said she was restrained, modest, conservative, traditional"

But what else would a Royal bride wear in Wesminster Abbey?

TBh, although Diana´s dress was horribly creased & does get slated I do think it was just right for her.

But something like that would have drowned Kate.

I think she had to have fitted sleeves, & then the skirt has to have some volume, so there´s no too much you can do.

Also the Grace Kelly "commoner to Princess" thing.

pranma · 30/04/2011 18:21

A 10 from me so beautifully unfussy and ,as one would expect, very classy-no ghastly meringue creation-perfect.

SybilBeddows · 30/04/2011 18:31

'But what else would a Royal bride wear in Wesminster Abbey?'

well that's sort of my point though Diddl, Diana's dress was more dramatic and attention-seeky; it was hugely romantic and no-one would ever have accused it of being boring. We don't yet know much about KM's personality but the dress goes with the sort of person she seems to be - quite restrained and calm.
She could easily have gone for something sexier without going outside protocol, but chose not to.

Having seen the whole thing replayed I want to give the dress 11/10. You can see it in all its glory as she walks down the aisle on the way out of the Abbey. The pleats worked perfectly.

diddl · 30/04/2011 18:46

I think I was misunderstanding a bitBlush

Diana´s dress was dramatic, but also I think approriate for her & the occasion.

She was tall & broad enough to carry it off.

It was fairytale/romantic, but the whole thing was at the time.

K & W have been together longer, she is older, more practical and yes understated.

WhiteBumOfTheMountain · 30/04/2011 18:46

I think the people who think the dress was boring, might ust have a penchant for jewel encrusted bodices and flouncy tulle skirts....Grin Kate's dress was gorgeous..the skirt showed her lovelyy waist off wonderfully....

noddyholder · 30/04/2011 18:46

I loved Dianas dress at the time it was just so right

diddl · 30/04/2011 18:47

I am liking K´s dress the more I see it & in any event she looked stunning.

BalloonSlayer · 30/04/2011 19:02

I like the dress more a day afterwards too.

Yet I still dislike lace over flesh, it reminds me of ballroom dancers/ice skaters. And for wedding dresses, very 80s/90s. But then, here we are again all in black leggings so hey . . .

I also feel bad about my comments earlier saying I thought Kate looked smug and uninterested in the church. I think I had only ever seen photos and footage of her smiling broadly and was surprised at seeing her looking solemn. But she should have looked solemn for the service.

diddl · 30/04/2011 19:06

Oh, well when I married-albeit not in Westminster Abbey-I´m sure I looked smug as I was marrying the man I loved & what´s more he loved me.

What´s not to be smug about?

thomasbodley · 30/04/2011 19:06

Whitebum But the evening dress was "jewel encrusted...and flouncy" and I thought that was boring too. Very designers at Debenhams, especially with the fluffy cardigan. Ick.

Sarah Burton has enormous talent and it would have been nice to see a dress that was a little more technically advanced. I do agree that Kate's very conservative and conformist number tells us a lot about her. She dresses like someone ten years older the rest of the time too Wink.

WhatWillSantaBring · 30/04/2011 19:08

Ah, but in chelsy's defence, she will (I think) be nearing the end of her city LPC at the mo, and it's pretty hardcore (my flatmate did it last year). Lots of exams and one fail and you're out, so pretty stressful.

I thought pippa's dress was stunning, and just right. However, she did look like she'd been dipped in tango. I don't see how she could have got away with any underwear in that dress though.

I did love kate's dress, but thought she could have got away with a longer train, tbh. However, stunning though she looked, in the photos today, she doesn't quite look like herself. She looks European, not English, IYSWIM. slightly too tanned, eyebrows to heavy. However, I'm being ultra picky because I'm [cenvy] [cgrin]!

Also, it's a shame she lost so much weight. She was a stunning size 10, but looked like she had a normal physique. At the size 6 (?) she is now, she is model thin, which doesn't set a good example IMHO. (it would be different if she was always that thin, but she wasn't.)

Didn't like the bouquet though. Far too small for the dress and the Abbey.

thomasbodley · 30/04/2011 19:09

I didn't like KM's make up either, much Sad. The awful hard-edged eyeliner was much in evidence and so was the blusher.

I think stress or excessive dieting has ruined her skin too - it was very dry and crepey, like smokers' skin. I saw her in the flesh once about a year ago and she had amazing skin then.

diddl · 30/04/2011 19:11

I actually thought that the bouquet was fine as it didn´t detract from the dress.
