To wonder what everyone's reaction's are to OG NIKI and her proclamation?

Really interested to know what people think about this. There has been a lot of talk about how people would react if it was their daughter or family member.

For those who don't know the back story, this is about a 17 year old girl who MC's (raps) from Birmingham. She has been an instant internet hit in the last couple of day's but for all the wrong(?) reasons.

Niki has made a grime (grime is a genre which can probably be defined as an original British rap style) tune about having sex with 6 guys at once and cites that everyone has been 'in her' since she lost her virginity at 16.

She is actually skilled as an MC but there is raging debate about her lyrics and attitude toward sex.

Personally I have grown up as part of the urban generation that listen's to grime music and find that it has it's good points and bad points like all genre's. But, with a very recent video by a mainstream grime artist featuring actual sex scene's (actual pornographic material) and now this, I do feel it is taking a nosedive. But I am not here to ask about the genre (just sad that this is coming out of it), more interested in what people would feel if this was their daughter. She say's her mother knows and does not care!

There seems to be a divide in opinion with some saying she is just being honest and making her claim to fame which is effectively working, and others are saying saying this is no way to get fame and she is degrading herself immensely.

Is this really a reputable way to fame these days? Has music sunk to this level of 'sex sells'?

She needs to be removed from society, preferably into a convent.

Problem sorted.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 14/04/2011 15:38

'No decent bloke would want to be with a woman who has slept around to that extent, nor would a decent bloke have any respect for her.'

Judging by this and the comments underneath the YT clip you needn't worry. The puritanical attitude towards females expressing sexuality still firmly applies, despite the fact that male artists - in all genres of music- are free to sing/rap about sex and display semi naked gyrating women in their videos.

It's a shame because she's actually rather good, and she's brought down avalanche of shit upon herself.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 14/04/2011 15:39

And the word is fuck.

LDNmummy · 14/04/2011 15:40

I do think there is definitely a hypocritcal stance taking place in regards to female/ male sexual identity.

LDmummy, sorry, you're right. When I said hip hop I actually meant r n' b. All genres showing signs of misogyny, though, as you say.

LDNmummy · 14/04/2011 15:41

I know Puffin lol

Just being careful of the more sensitive types who may not appreciate me writing fuck every other word.

I could make an uncensored version just for you Grin

No problem Mary, besides I wasn't specifically pointing you out, just making a general point Smile

Geez i have just looked at her facebook page and there is random blokes posting a video of her exposing herself to them whilst they give the order on what to show.

If anyone is stupid enough to think she is empowering women then they need their bumps felt.

perfumedlife · 14/04/2011 15:44

I hate males that brag about sex too. No discrimination. It's vulgar and totally unconvincing.

not mad on the tune but it's ok I just don't like her voice, I think my disappointment was added to by the fact that I was hoping it would be a nikki minaj track when I saw the title.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 14/04/2011 22:29

You see, I think this idea that a woman couldn't possibly have loads of sex with different partners unless she is 'pandering to the patriarchy' insulting and antifeminist. It's buying into the myth that women don't like sex and are sexual gatekeepers, and if they seek out commitment-free sex and are open about how much they enjoy it they are lying/defective. In a really equal world, the choice to have group sex every night, to seek out One True Love or to avoid sex altogether because you have little or no interest in it would be seen as equally valid and valuable ways of leading your life, whether you're male or female. Plenty of men are more into sex than romance, plenty of men have low or non-existent libidos, and plenty of men like to have loads of commitment-free sex, and the same is true of women. The really damaging myth is that only the Love&Romance-linked sex is actually valid, and those who are at either end of the spectrum have something wrong with them that needs correcting.

Poor wee lassie Sad

jellykit · 15/04/2011 10:36

Morning SGB. I hear you. You stand outside the usual paradigm when it comes to sexuality. I'm always curious as to whether your politics are due to your profession or your profession is due to your politics. I'm not expecting you to answer that as i'm not convinced (with all due respect) that you would know. Same goes for that girl. Sometimes the prosex brand of 'feminism' is a neccessary part of mental survival. I don't believe there is any stand alone 'truth' BUT she and you are subject to the pull of the 'norm'. Her behaviour and your are outside of the norm. It's an exhilarating but also emotionally dangerous place to stand. You are older and therefore more capable of reflection and critical thought. She's young and less solid. I wouldn't be surprised if she broke in a few years time and found God or ended up killing herself.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 15/04/2011 11:32

Jellykit: Well I was TBH a lot, erm, cockier about my sexual choices in my younger days, probably to the point of being brash and boastful and annoying on occasions Wink. And yes, I got a lot of negative comments, some more well-intentioned than others. But I had some good friends, and I read a lot of stuff about independence and making your own sexual choices (some of which was more feminist than some of the rest of it) and didn't break.
ANd TBH I find your speculation that this kid will get religion or become a drug addict or slit her wrists rather depressing. I didn't break, why should she?

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 15/04/2011 11:49

Needs better production.

jellykit · 15/04/2011 11:55

SGB:-because you are an intelligent and educated woman who is more easily able to rationalise and defend your actions to yourself and others. By 'defend' I mean against the riptide of wider disapproval from those who hold other values (and sometimes don't reflect greatly on those values).

She's 17 and has put herself up for public vilification. When I was 17 I used to get anxious if I didn't have the right trainers and that was without the whole world commenting and ripping me to pieces.

I don't think it's going to end well really

alistron1 · 15/04/2011 12:02

I'd be devastated if my kids were into such shit music, regardless of the lyrics Grin

What the fuck has happened to the world? Where are all the bright, talented youngsters being properly creative? Where are the new Pink Floyds, Led Zepplins etc?? Accomplished, intelligent, artistic, erudite.

Anyway, I live in brum and I've never heard of her. She aint no UB40.

WassaAxolotlEgg · 15/04/2011 12:03

perfumedlife

I don't have a daughter, but if I did, and she liked and agreed with this crap, I would throw her out.

Lovely. Frigging lovely.

OliPolly · 15/04/2011 12:10

Pink Floyd and Led Zep are good because?

People have different tastes in music just as they have different tastes in everything else. Some rock music lyrics are shit too!

I am 31 and I listen any kind of music but love RnB and Hip Hop.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 15/04/2011 12:17

Well, she may suffer for what she has said, and she's getting shit already. But I see no need to add to it. I think she's brave and I admire her (even though I don't like hiphop music at all) and wish her lots of luck.
Feminists, after all, get loads of shit for their non-mainstream opinions, for having them and expressing them. Yet feminists can be young, badly-educated and brash, and still stand up to the pressures.
