And 'I was stood'. That's no better than it ought to be either. Numbskulls all of them. Seated or standing.

Numberfour · 13/04/2011 21:42

It's a case of mixing the passive and the active voice. Cannot for the life of me think of examples now other than if you say "I was sat in front" it means that someone plonked you down in the front (passive voice). If you say "I was sitting in front" it means that you went to the front of your own volition and sat down (active voice).

Honest question: is grammar taught in English schools? I went to school in another country, and have very little experience of schooling in England.

Islandgirllk · 13/04/2011 22:53

I'm amazed that no-one has mentioned 'COZ' yet!!!!!

Listen out for it on the television and radio, it's becoming more and more common - a certain Radio 2 presenter on from 12-2pm is one of the worst culprits!

It's BECAUSE......!!!!

claretandcheese · 13/04/2011 23:10

So, I should of thought you would of realised why we are sat here not mentioning that, Islandgirlk.

It's coz we have gotten preoccupied with all the other pedant-provoking phrase's etc.

There seem to be less of these to get worked up about on the weekend, somehow.

Now wheres that wretched apostrophe gone? Wink

CheerfulYank · 13/04/2011 23:24

The other day a teacher at the school where I work said "I haven't saw her yet..." I was a bit Shock.

Never heard "I was sat", guess it's not an American thing. :) We've got plenty of our own, believe me!

dayday · 13/04/2011 23:44

coz, soz, ta, worser, bro, innit. The list can go on forever. Kids of today have no clue because they are always texting, they dont know proper English anymore. If they do computer work at schools they have spelling and grammar checks.

Is there not other more important things to worry about in the world?

Yes you are correct but then the overuse of the f word also iritates me - most of the time there is a much less vulgar word to use which would much more eloquently get the point across.

I prefer a person who writes "sat" or "sitting" than someone who repeatedly uses the word FUCK. Correct your own language first.

glastocat · 15/04/2011 13:22

Leonie, swearing is used as punctuation in Ireland. Its great!
