At a certain point in grammar, common usage over-rides rules.

NotShortImHotCrossBunSized · 11/04/2011 19:47

Not quite the same but DP says toilIt instead of toilet and I want to inflict serious pain every time I hear him say it.

TaudrieTattoo · 11/04/2011 19:48

Actually, "I am seated" is correct. "Sitting" describes the act of sitting down.

FlaminGreatGallah · 11/04/2011 19:51

"and I turned and said, and then she turned and said, and I went...."

My sister does this. "Then I turnt round and sayed then she turnt round and sayed..."

I get an image of people pirouetting as they argue Confused

nulliusxinxverbax · 11/04/2011 19:59

Calm down.

FabbyChic · 11/04/2011 20:00

Ive never been up north, am a southerner born and bred and I say Im sat here waiting, rather than Im sitting here waiting.

Needanewname · 11/04/2011 20:00

and breathe......,.

Ginabraz · 11/04/2011 20:04

This is funny. I was discussing this very topic recently with great friend from Australia and we both wondered how and why the Brits even use such strange adaptions of the language.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 11/04/2011 20:04

I amn't at all sure what you'd be saying about some of the English spoken in Ireland then, if sat here rather than sitting here bothers you.

I'm Northern and I HATE it when people say sat instead of sitting.

mayorquimby · 11/04/2011 21:53

"I brought this" when they mean BOUGHT and "should of.." instead of should have are my two current most hated.

Leverkusen · 11/04/2011 21:57

It's not northen, it's wrong. I am northern and I know plenty of southern people, and they all make the same mistake.

Also, a lot is TWO WORDS, not one.

Another I have seen on MN everyday for the past week: it is she did, not she done.

FlaminGreatGallah · 11/04/2011 22:02

Is "everyday" one word in that context Leverkusen? I didn't know that.

By the way, I am ashamed to have expressed my irritation at people "sat crying" now that I have seen a thread title on this page saying exactly that.

Great timing OP Blush

Leverkusen · 11/04/2011 22:04

Sorry didn't mean 'everyday', I actually don't know! I meant the 'she did' 'she done' thing.

FlaminGreatGallah · 11/04/2011 22:06

Not to worry DH says it's two however it is one word if you're wanting it to mean ordinary. Now we know Smile (until superior pedants come along to correct DH)

Wallace · 11/04/2011 22:10

Thank you, you took the words right out of my head.

You even hear it on the BBC Shock

JenniL1977 · 11/04/2011 22:14

Every day.

My favourite bugbear at present: IndependENT, persistENT. Not with A-N-T at the end. Bejeesus.

I am aware of the fact that 'bejeesus' is not a proper word :)

mercibucket · 11/04/2011 22:22

can't some of you go and buy a basic intro book on linguistics and stop cluttering up the message boards with nonsense - you never know you might enjoy it Smile

Olifin · 11/04/2011 22:29

Oooh yes OP, I dislike 'I was sat/I am sat' too.

Another one I keep hearing: 'The dog/baby needs fed'....surely that should be 'feeding' or 'to be fed'? It seems to be a recent thing. Anyone know if it's regional? If so, where?

Tanith · 11/04/2011 23:17

"barf means baff"

So how do you sing Baa Baa Black Sheep, then?

sungirltan · 11/04/2011 23:24

i can deal with the satting. its the ignorance about lay/lie that kills me. as in the past and present tense. 'i'm going for a lay down' is effing wrong!!!

JockTamsonsBairns · 11/04/2011 23:34

My DH does the "I am sat" business and it irks the life out of me.

What's worse though is that he seems to think that inanimate objects have desires, eg "That soup wants stirring", "That sofa wants moving into the other room".

MaisyMooCow · 11/04/2011 23:36

Please don't get me started on this. Everyday I hear people say 'fink' instead of 'think'. I've heard lots of people refer to a chimney as a 'chimley'
say aksed instead of asked.

Aaargggh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fortyplus · 11/04/2011 23:42

What about people who say 'done' instead of 'did'?

My colleague says this - I ask her if she's done something and she replies 'Yes I done it yesterday' AGH!!

I love her though Smile
