AIBU to think that obese people should be extra careful on moving buses?

I had an obese mum land her entire body weight on my right knee yesterday as the bus we were travelling on jolted forwards - I was already sitting with ds, she had just got on with her husband and toddler. She apologised and even gave my knee a quick pat.

I woke up in pain today. There were plenty of handles to hold onto (it was a very modern bus) and def not overcrowded. I had intended to run many important errands today though I cannot do this anymore as it would be too painful. I am fuming.

Obese + clumsy = do not travel by bus ??

So should people with next to no body fat and sharp elbows

Olessaty · 28/03/2011 09:59

Yes. All obese people obviously should walk. It would be far better for them. Biscuit

'Important errands'! PMSL.

mycatoscar · 28/03/2011 10:00

yabu to aim that comment just at people who are obese - a well built man with a pointy briefcase could have done just as much harm

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 28/03/2011 10:00

Well, being a fat bastard meself i completely agree with you. I wouldn't want a heffalump sized me landing on my knee either....she should have been holding on tight at least.

Must have been bloody embarassing tho

Oh, no. Sorry. Don't have that biscuit. It might make you fat, and then how would you manage?

charitygirl · 28/03/2011 10:01

Oh, and stop moaning about the inconveniences of your pauper transport, and get a taxi next time.

Sweetpea215 · 28/03/2011 10:01

Ooops.....controversial! :)

I think the problem is more with the drivers being impatient....and starting the bus before people have been allowed to sit down! I've banged my head on more than one occasion and suffered a couple of bruises because of buses shooting off and literally throwing me into my seat!

(hateful post)

2littlegreenmonkeys · 28/03/2011 10:02

Sorry to hear you are hurt and in pain, but surely what happened to this lady (obese or not) could happen to anyone of any size and stature and would have still caused pain due to the jolt of the bus and the falling anyway Confused

YABU.

ForShizzle · 28/03/2011 10:04

This is GBH surely? Didn't you call the police?

Also, contact your local MP and suggest dedicated buses for the obese.

nenevomito · 28/03/2011 10:05

Poor you, have Brew and a Biscuit.

I suspect anyone landing on your knee would have caused you pain, but I am sure that you are right that only fat people should take care on buses. The rest of them can land on your knee whenever they want.

Your poor important errands.

MmeLindt · 28/03/2011 10:06

Oh, but I am sorry to hear that you are in pain.

You would have got more sympathy if you had written, "AIBU to think that this woman should have been more careful?".

Not quite sure that her weight was such a large (no pun intended) factor. Surely anyone landing on your lap could hurt you?

wahwahwah · 28/03/2011 10:06

Surely if they were fat, they'd be squishy. It's the sharp skinny people I'd watch out for.

SherlockMoans · 28/03/2011 10:08

Stupid people shouldnt breed or attempt to deal with the outside world - but they do Grin

I can understand you being upset but probably would have been better not to mention the obesity - its like waving a red rag to a bull.

figcake · 28/03/2011 10:09

Not meant to be hateful/spiteful/fattist. I have had other people falling on me in buses - they are usually children and there has been no damage done.

I don't use buses very often either - it was a treat for DS. Of course it is not just obese people who need to be more careful - but it is fair to say that heavier bodies cause the most damage in these instances. Secondary Physics, right?

MitchiestInge · 28/03/2011 10:12

maybe they should have a special bariatric bus for anyone with a BMI over 22, athletes excluded?

MmeLindt · 28/03/2011 10:15

Not necessarily. I would say it depends how the person falls, and where he/she lands.

So a person landing with their full weight on one of your knees would be painful no matter what weight she was - if she landed full on your lap then your knee would not be so sore.

What if it had been a rugby player sized guy? He could easily weigh as much as an obese woman. Should he not be allowed on buses?

ChaoticAngelofDenial · 28/03/2011 10:20

So if it had been a man who weighed say 16 stone but that weight was muscle rather than fat it would be okay would it? Hmm

Biscuit
figcake · 28/03/2011 10:21

Well, I suppose they should be MORE aware of the need to hold on tight in view of the likely damage they would be capable of inflicting upon a seated passenger. The way in which she fell is relevant, I agree. Her buttocks appeared to separate on either side of my knee (I saw this as she was wearing well-worn leggings) - It did feel soft and squishy at the time (although there was a brief twinge of pain almost immediately).

HipHopopotomus · 28/03/2011 10:23

well you are directing your fuming towards this woman as she was obese - when actually she could have been average adult size and you could still be in the same pain?

Why not direct your 'fuming' towards the bad/inconsiderate bus driving, or the person sitting who perhaps should have offered a mother with toddler a seat, or even at the "person" who was unfortunate enough to have been caught off balance as the bus she had just got on "jolted" forwards before she could take a seat - her size really doesn't have much to do with it - could have happened to anyone. It was an accident FFS not a direct attack by a fat person!!!

I've travelled by bus loads and loads and have never had anyone fall on me - yet you rarely travel by bus and yet have had other people fall on you too!! Coincidence? Or maybe you need to look at what you might be doing on buses to attract these fallers? Grin

FannyFifer · 28/03/2011 10:24

Going on the bus is " a treat" for your DS, do ye not get out much?

flimflammery · 28/03/2011 10:25

This is a wind-up, right?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 28/03/2011 10:25

Don't be a prat. Otherwise I shall call for a ban of size 10 businesswomen who also don't hold onto the railings and put their stiletto heel through my foot. I bet that was more painful than your knee.

People should hold onto something on a moving bus or train, no need to be a pillock about it.

Ormirian · 28/03/2011 10:25

Good thing I don't go by public transport. I am not obese, not even overweight, but I am tall so quite heavy.
