to think my dd has no right to take it upon herself to do this

My dd (12) has been really moody and stroppy all day - something she does when she's over tired, so I ignored the strops and put it down to tiredness.

Then tonight she told me she had taken an anti-histamine this morning because when she went out to play her eyes were itching

Now, as she's my youngest and she's 12 I really don't feel the need to keep the medication locked up BUT I would never have dreamed that she would help herself to tablets without even asking. I am horrified.

When I told her in no uncertain terms that she was not allowed to take ANYTHING without checking with me first she said that she had asked me but I wasn't listening.

I think she's lying. I am sure that she didn't ask but even if she did ask and I wasn't listening that doesn't give her the right to go ahead and take one anyway does it?

slartybartfast · 27/03/2011 23:28

she should have made sure op was listening.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 27/03/2011 23:28

or Bluddy - she might have asked, the OP replied, but wasn't really listening so doesn't remember

AuntiePickleBottom · 27/03/2011 23:28

perhaps come up with a pill box, put it in the bathroom and then you can see she has taken her tablet.

what will you do if she wants to go on the contraception pill, or has bad period pains...will she have to ask your permission everytime.

", I thought you did have to be 16. The chemist in Morrisons wouldn't sell my 14 year old son a nasal decongestant spray last week."

Thats proabably because it's not liscensenced for 14 year olds. My DS was prescribed flixonase from the age of 10 for sinus problems although the box actually says 18+. Beconase is 18+ as well

He was self medicating himself with antihistamines from a lot younger than 12 for food allergies.

slartybartfast · 27/03/2011 23:30

how old do you have to be to go o n contraceptive pill.
and perhaps dd would like to disucss it with her mum or vice versa, why on earth not.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow · 27/03/2011 23:30

roses

dd said that she asked me but I wasn't listening.

That doesn't mean that she asked me and I wasn't listening

It means she said she asked and I wasn't listening.

So she might not have asked.

Is that any clearer? Not being sarky Grin genuinely trying to clarify where the accent should be, it doesn't come accross in writing like it does if you talk face to face.

OP posts:
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 27/03/2011 23:31

yes - it makes it clear that you don't believe that she asked you at all...........therefore her "saying" she asked you is a lie - ergo you are calling your daughter a liar.

pinksancerre · 27/03/2011 23:31

I have a 12 year old dd who says she asks and I didn't answer - normally to get herself out of a sticky spot! I would expect dd to self medicate regular meds if we had agreed, but wouldn't expect her to diagnose herself and go help herself to meds cabinet!

nickschick · 27/03/2011 23:34

A1980 I dont have a dd so I cant say ......but I know I have had to ring school and ask them to give ds a paracetamol.

roses42 · 27/03/2011 23:36

Fgs in over 100 replies why do you just pick mine out to personally reply to?

I have 2 teenagers, I know how their minds work, it seems that you do not listen to anyone, I am not stupid, my kids know what they can and connot do,

It seems that your child is behaving in a completly reasonably way and taking contro; because you do not listen. yet you are not happy, grow up,

tiggerandpoohtoo · 27/03/2011 23:40

My original degree is in pharmacology and a little knowledge makes you very wary. I wouldn't want my 12 year old taking any drug without asking me first.

I now work in a secondary school. Our pupils are not allowed to self medicate even painkillers. They have to go to the school nurse who will dispense paracetamol if it is on record that parents are ok with this.

So i don't think YABU

WassaAxolotl · 27/03/2011 23:44

Oh, my sainted Jessica! Are we arguing about the connotations of a word in a noun forn, as opposed to a verb form?
Right, NotSuch, you think your daughter could be claiming she did ask, when she actually didn't. Have I got this right?

So, what is your daughter learning from today's debacle? Make sure it's not "never tell any authority figure that I've taken medication, because I might get in trouble". That's a great way to end up on opposing medications.

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 27/03/2011 23:47

slarty not sure but I went on it at 12 to help with my period pains...

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 27/03/2011 23:49

tigger tbh (not your fault I know!) thats ridiculous! What about the sixth formers?

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 27/03/2011 23:49

OP what if you're not home and she has a reaction?

Although I'd bet you don't let her stay home on her own...

lesley33 · 27/03/2011 23:50

Notsuchamarriedsmugbow - the chemist probably wouldn't sell your son a nasal decongestant without you there because it is one of the over the counter drugs that can be abused to create a high.

tiggerandpoohtoo · 27/03/2011 23:51

Hi Allsquare, i should have made it clear - there are separate rules for the sixth form.

lookatthetime · 27/03/2011 23:52

So Tigger what are schools supposed to do with children who need medication during school time (asthma, diabetes etc) who do not have a school nurse to supervise?

Yes thats right they self medicate. Most primary schools do not have a school nurse.

AuntiePickleBottom · 27/03/2011 23:53

slartybartfast i was on the pill at 13 due to period issues, the gp didn't even ask if i had my mum permission ( my mum knew anyway, but on the day of the appoinment my brother was ill so went alone)

LessNarkyPuffin · 27/03/2011 23:55

'Our pupils are not allowed to self medicate even painkillers'

It wasn't allowed at my school either. I took paracetemol and nurofen for every day of every period I had as a teen. Most of the girls had paracetemol in their bags.

tiggerandpoohtoo · 27/03/2011 23:56

I don't know lookatthetime! I only know what we do.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 27/03/2011 23:58

Am going to swim against the tide here and say that YANBU.

I would still expect a 12yo to ask before taking tablets. Asking for advice from an adult before taking medication shows more maturity than helping yourself from the medicine cabinet imo.
