Just happened upon the last one and liked it, so ...

I don't think The King's Speech is that great a film; I think the directing was often unimaginative, cliched and banal and the script obvious. And Helena Bonham Carter wasn't that good.

Well, I think her bank account begs to differ. Why don't you give her some tips on being a "real" author?

Luz09 · 21/03/2011 16:27

Allsquare... not sure why i am fessing this here but is that worse than texting £1 to Chris Moyles' comic relief effort and then sitting back to enjoy the Friday night show safe in the knowledge I had contributed Hmm?

LadyOfTheManor · 21/03/2011 16:27

The Sun is the most read paper in the country. What does that tell you?

WalterFlipsticks · 21/03/2011 16:27

LOTM I also eat the skin off kiwis! much to every witness' disgust!

LadyOfTheManor · 21/03/2011 16:28

Yes, I thought it was normal until I started doing it in front of people. People genuinely run for the hills!

WalterFlipsticks · 21/03/2011 16:29

I rendered three people speechless on Friday doing exactly that!

jasminetom · 21/03/2011 16:30

I do not care a jot and drive a 5l Hummer. I do live in the deser thouh where petrol is 11p a litre,

usualsuspect · 21/03/2011 16:32

I love Jilly Copper books

LadyOfTheManor · 21/03/2011 16:33

I'm sure she appreciates it.

reelingintheyears · 21/03/2011 16:33

I love Jilly Cooper and Joanna Trollope.

bupcakesandcunting · 21/03/2011 16:33

It tells me that it is a popular newspaper. Not sure I understand your point...

GetOrfMoiLand · 21/03/2011 16:34

Jilly Cooper novels are indeed brilliant - they are excellent examples of their genre, like Nancy Mitford novels. Really brilliantly plotted and clever in their way.

penny Vincenzi is also a good author in the same genre.

People who look down on popular novels like this in comparison to 'classics' are being needlessly snobby. Jane Austen novels were the equivalent of these, fast forward 200 years and I expect Jilly Cooper novels will be studied at A level.

I also loved my MGF, despite it being regarded as a shit car. It was great fun to drive, really responsive. Shame the gasket blew up.

LadyOfTheManor · 21/03/2011 16:35

Just because it's popular and makes lots of money doesn't mean it's any good i.e. The Sun.

bupcakesandcunting · 21/03/2011 16:35

Should've added: literary snobs are inevitably boring, pompous and are the sort of people that when they walk into a room full of people, everyone tries to look busy or engrossed in conversation so that they don't have to deal with them.

My ex-BF is married to such a person. He has NO friends.

reelingintheyears · 21/03/2011 16:35

Ah Nancy Mitford..'The pursuit of love'.

ScramVonChubby · 21/03/2011 16:35

'The Sun is the most read paper in the country. What does that tell you?
that most papers are purchased by blokes who want to look at random tits?

usualsuspect · 21/03/2011 16:35

I hate book snobs

LadyOfTheManor · 21/03/2011 16:36

How unfortunate for him.

LadyOfTheManor · 21/03/2011 16:36

I hate trashy literature.

bupcakesandcunting · 21/03/2011 16:38

The Sun is different. It caters for a demographic. It's a lazy comparison.

What does it tell you that I and my two best university friends have firsts in English Lit', one of us has an MA in Russian Literature and we all love Jilly Cooper?

People who feel the need to be snobby about "low-brow" literature are try-hards. That pretty much sums it up, I think.

usualsuspect · 21/03/2011 16:38

I hate people who pretend to only read the classics to impress people

it doesn't

reelingintheyears · 21/03/2011 16:39

I love Enid Blyton.

GetOrfMoiLand · 21/03/2011 16:39

My Nancy Mitford novels are trashed from repeated re-reading.

I am the spritual reincarnation of Lady Mountdore (in my own head, that is Grin)

LadyOfTheManor · 21/03/2011 16:40

I have a 1st in Eng. lit and an MA and I don't like her at all.

Evidently it sums up nothing.

GetOrfMoiLand · 21/03/2011 16:41

I read the classics when I was a teenager. That is the only age you can be absorbed with the angst of Cathy/Jane/Tess without thinking 'oh go fuck yourselves' and slinging the book across the room.

I am no idiot, think popular novels have an equal place alongside more highbrow stuff.
