You're a complete arsehole.

OP posts:
EdwardorEricCantdecide · 19/03/2011 11:11

YABU

i did donate its the first year i've done so as i'm pregnant and the babies on TV had me in tears all night, i donated quite a bit more than i could afford and DH matched my donation. so i understand what your saying about how u can watch it and not donate?

but i do think u are in fact being an arsehole for being so judgey when you know nothing of others circumstance.

in any case i'm sure every1 donates in some way or other anyway either through their work cost me a tenner in raffles sponsorship or fancy dress to go to work yesterday. or through their kids school.

lusciousliz · 19/03/2011 11:16

if you can afford to and are slobbed out infront of the marathon programme and choose not to donate because its to much like getting up, then yes shame on you!

why? its not compulsory to donate, like others have said maybe they prefer to give money to other charities, maybe they dont. Their money, their choices.

NinkyNonker · 19/03/2011 11:22

How very unoriginal, I didn't donate or watch it, but I donate to 5 hand picked, close to my heart charities every month, I don't need some massive tv extravaganza to remind me there are others worse off.

Now who is the arsehole.

NinkyNonker · 19/03/2011 11:30

Oh, and I am a volunteer, I donate all of our unwanted books etc to our chosen charity shop, I offer my services for free to local charities and donate a percentage of everything I sell on eBay.

Then I get hacked off about the mawkish, self-congratulatory posts going up on Facebook all last night from people making their one off donation amounting to less than their standard beers after work, who will pat themselves on the back and think "job done"....for another year.

CakeandRoses · 19/03/2011 11:51

c'mon tsc she is a mnetter isn't she? (i mean as well as being your friend)

ChaoticAngelofAnarchy · 19/03/2011 12:17

YABU

I didn't watch or donate. I'll donate to charities I want to donate to and will not be emotionally blackmailed in to donating to others.

Portofino · 19/03/2011 12:19

I haven't donated anything to CR. On the other hand one of my dh's colleagues is actually going to Africa in a few weeks to do some work with a charity they support. They will be taking a not unsubstantial amount of stuff - clothes, toys, practical things from us with them. Plus I donate all my used books to a charity here, and then buy new ones at their sales. I buy A LOT of books.

gorionine · 19/03/2011 12:30

I tend to give money to charities that have lss mediatic coverage. They struugle more to get funds for causes that IMHO are at lest as valid as the ones supported by rednoseday.

I was actually quite annoyed when DD1' high school sent a txt message to me saying that "if she has not brought her contribution to school yet, she MUST bring it tomorrow!" nor "should you wish to doonate , tomorrow is the deadline to do so". DD told me that children with no contributon wouldbe given extra work (she gave me a name that I forgot that to me meant 'detention' but used a different word, I will ask again.

I have several problems with that, as

  1. you cannot punish a child because their parents won't/are not able to give to charity

2)charity as far as I know is not compulsary

3)this year I happen to have sponsored 3 children I work with for RND. I thought it was enough and I did not need to actually show that I gave for it by doing it through my own daughter as well.

YABU. Do you say that about all charities? There are hundreds of charities. This is just one of them. What an ignorant thing to say OP.

IlsaLund · 19/03/2011 12:50

YABU
I didn't watch or donate.
It doesn't mean I don't donate to charity - it just means I didn't choose to donate to this particular charity.

As far as I am aware that doesn't make me an arsehole.

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 19/03/2011 13:39

I watched CR but I sky+'d it so I could fast forward through the emotional blackmail.
That definitely makes me an arsehole.

Pft. I dont care. I have no money til I get paid, and I only get paid for the next two months before my stat mat pay ends. After that, I'm on zilch. And have nearly 10k of debt.

To anyone who spots the sky+ and feels the need to complain, it stops me being bothered about not going out.

CrapBag · 19/03/2011 13:41

YABU.

No one has to donate to anything.

There is a thing called free will.

Wanker.

jesieb · 19/03/2011 14:31

I didn't phone/text to donate last night.

However I did buy 6 noses, 2 car noses, 2 badges, an annoying laughing ball AND a grow your own nose (tomato plant seeds)

Am I still an arse hole?

But actually whilst watching last night it dawned on me.. where does all this money actually go??? £22 for food for x amount if time.£5 for a net...£40+ million was raised last time, so why is there no change in situations? At 10pm last night £46million had been raised... yet in 2 years time.... again nothing would of changed.

tattiemum · 19/03/2011 14:39

You're an arsehole if you think that giving money to a charity just because it's shoved in front of your face by celebs makes you high and mighty enough to sneer at other people whose charitable donations don't solely revolve around what's spoon-fed to you on TV.

MikeOxstiff · 19/03/2011 14:40

I dont and I am

KaraStarbuckThrace · 19/03/2011 14:42

So some anonymous poster decides I'm an arsehole because I didn't donate to Comic Relief.

You know what? I don't really give a fuck. What and to whom I donate is MY business and no-one elses.

Now off you trot LilatheBrave.

DramaInPyjamas · 19/03/2011 14:45

allsquareknickersnofurcoat
I sky+'d it too for exactly the same reason - to skip through all the shit and the emotional blackmail(and was left with not much to watch tbh)

I didn't donate directly, but I did buy two noses via school and gave the kids 50p each to wear something red for the day.

stillfeel18inside · 19/03/2011 14:45

YABVU - can't bear competitive charitable giving, it's totally up to the individual and nobody else's business.

DramaInPyjamas · 19/03/2011 14:49

Forgot - Also bought some Walkers crisps and Babybels. It all adds up you know!

RunAwayWife · 19/03/2011 14:50

Well as a result of being called an asrehole for not donating , I shall make sure I never donate again, I shall even take back the money I promised DS2 for his sponsored skip!!!!

iwasyoungonce · 19/03/2011 14:53

That's a bit of an odd reaction RunAwayWife. Are you serious? I don't think the OP is actually representing the charity in her views!

feeblephoebe · 19/03/2011 14:53

But actually whilst watching last night it dawned on me.. where does all this money actually go??? £22 for food for x amount if time.£5 for a net...£40+ million was raised last time, so why is there no change in situations? exactly, this has been going on since Live Aid and before so why has nothing whatsoever changed

except the African Govts getting fatter and happier

BabyDubsEverywhere · 19/03/2011 14:55

I watched it, well it was on, only really 'watched' the eastenders bit Blush

I only give to Animal charities, (and i give more than we can actually afford most months) so I'm happy with my charitable contributions, no slebs crying will change that.

And btw OP, those kids are suffering all the time, not just when its comic relief, if you really felt passionatly about those causes you'd have donated/got involved whatever before last night!
