You know the sort where you wonder who, just WHO are they employing to come up with these things, and you seethe because you could do SO much better AND you would be able to call yourself "a writer" at parties and people would be all impressed and that.

My nominees are.

Little Red Tractor video.

The TV breaks down. So two ADULTS decide that what they'll do instead is put on a show.

Yeah. Because when our TV breaks down, DH and I reject all of the following potential courses of action:

  • Getting out the one from the other room
  • Calling a repair man
  • Going to Tescos to get another one
  • Reading a book
  • Having a conversation
  • Having sex*

In favour of singing and dancing for each other, perhaps even juggling.

Please, has anyone ever in the history of history put on a show because their telly won't work?

  • Disclaimer. The children might have been wanting to watch telly in this episode so maybe sex is not a suitable option in this case

Nominee Two

Thomas the Tank Engine Book - Jeremy (the Jet Engine)

"The Children" - that amorphous mass who must never be disappointed on the Island of Sodor - are having a picnic. Oh NO - it starts to rain!! The picnic will be RUINED! Sad Shock Does anyone say "Oh it's nowt but a bit of rain, it won't kill you." ? Of course not. It's a disaster.

Thomas steams to the rescue. Good old Thomas! What does he do? Takes them to Jeremy's hangar and they have their picnic in there.

So on what planet is having a picnic in an aircraft hangar a) safe or b) pleasurable? Why can't they eat their sandwiches in the train?

I take my DCs on days out and pay good money for them to eat their lunch in the carriage of a steam train.

Further nominations welcome.

Oh Bullet! Yes! The poor sad cats! The evil thumb chopper was The Long Legged Scissor Man

WhipMeIndiana · 16/03/2011 22:24

yes - the percy the park keeper books are painful reading, lets face it when you feel an arse readin words to a 4yr old you know the words aint good..

on the other hand any kids age 2+ would love Mo Wliiem's Piggy and Elephant series. utterly hilarious to read and got dd reading words before any other book.

WhipMeIndiana · 16/03/2011 22:26

a really bonkers book is Maurice Maeterlinck's The Bluebird.
spooky, odd, even beyond the realms of magic really , as a plot device...

yet it was made into a film in the 70s with a child age patsy kensit as the girl lead role, Mytyl, and I saw the film as a child and thus it haunts me for the rest of my days,, not least because nobody else on the earth has seen it... Angry

Housewife2010 · 16/03/2011 22:30

I've seen The Bluebird. Has Liz Taylor & Ava Gardner in it. The book of Ballet Shoes has a big chunk of the play in it as Pauline & Petrova play the leads in a school production

UnquietDad · 16/03/2011 22:44

Has anyone else got those weird "Day Full Of Fun" etc. videos from the 90s, where Janet Ellis takes lots of kids out for the day? The first one actually doesn't feature Janet but a man who, I'm afraid, we came to refer to all the time as "Andrew The Paedo." They're a bit weird.

Oh, gawd, yes, Rainbow Bloody Fairies. So glad DD has moved on from those. I was longing for the day Rachel and Kirsty would acquire nose-studs, swig cider behind the bike-sheds and say, "Do you remember when we believed in all that fairy shit, babes?"

I hardly dare mention I have a children's book (for 10-14s) out next year. I wonder what you will all make of it? I have tried my best not to put anything shit, dull or patronising in.

BoattoBolivia · 16/03/2011 23:11

The mole book is brilliant- if you search really hard you can find a gift version in a box with a little cuddly mole with poo on his head! Grin

Refuse point blank to read any rainbow fairies/animal ark or similar tripe now dd can read then herself, and buy them too with her own blinking pocket money.

Told dd's nursery, who kindly encouraged the children to bring home a book to share every night, to NOT allow her to bring home any TV tie-in books as they are ALL crap.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 16/03/2011 23:16

BoattaBolivia Envy I want that mole now!

UnquietDad · 16/03/2011 23:22

(puts hand up nervously)

Not all TV tie-in books are crap. Some Doctor Who books are really good.

LaWeasel · 16/03/2011 23:27

It's true I can think of someother other geeky tie-in books that are genuinely good ideas and written well. But they're not really stuff I'd read to DD.

BoattoBolivia · 16/03/2011 23:29

Jooly- I know, bought it as a present and then kicked myself for not buying one for me dd Grin
UD: do they have a real live David Tennant is can take out and 'cuddle'? No? Then they are crap!! Smile

UnquietDad · 16/03/2011 23:32

I did ask if I could include the pop-out David option but it would have put the cover price up.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 16/03/2011 23:46

A pop-out David would be all vey well, but he doesn't have a poo on his head, does he?

RustyRainbow · 17/03/2011 07:54

I loved the film the Bluebird - the Liz Taylor version. The dead grandparents and the little sister yet to be born who's gift to her family is to die young Sad - that was some weird shit!

NeverPoohonaMole · 17/03/2011 08:00

Two words

Old Yeller

RustyRainbow · 17/03/2011 08:33

Also - The Yearling! Who thought that was a good idea for a kids film?? Hmm

Poor family, child adopts a baby dear, child befriends SN boy, SN boy dies, mum shoots fawn, child has to finish dying fawn off to put him out of his misery.

Laugh a minute that film....

BalloonSlayer · 17/03/2011 09:27

UQD you write some of the Dr Who books for kids dontcha? Are they ones from this series? Or the skinnier ones?

My DS1 and his mate love them.

Idontknowhowtohelpher · 17/03/2011 09:28

The mole book is available in a plop up version Grin www.amazon.co.uk/Story-Little-Mole-Plop-up/dp/1843650959

UnquietDad · 17/03/2011 10:15

BalloonSlayer - yes, for the bigger hardback series (first link). Books of about 200-300 pages. Aimed not just at kids but also teenagers and the adult fans too - a hard balancing act!

Rhian82 · 17/03/2011 10:58

Wow, impressed now! Haven't read many of the new ones, but grew up with Target books, then New and Missing Adventures, then the EDAs and PDAs?

(suspect this may be a foreign language to non-classic-Who fans)

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 17/03/2011 11:11

Rusty: " I HATE ya pa, I hope ya die"! Confused

Unquietdad We love Dr Who books, You are a GOD! Grin

RustyRainbow · 17/03/2011 11:21

Saggy - i was traumatised for ages...

Housemum · 17/03/2011 14:11

Brambly Sodding Hedge - DD1 got the bumper book as a present - it makes me hope the whole lot become dinner for a fox. Icky-sicky-faux-Victoriana-shite. Sorry, just saw the book when tidying up (DD2 found it before it hit the charity bag and adopted it) and had to let rip. Apologies if Jill Barklem (sp?) is an MNer but given the books have been around since the 80s I'm guessing not.

meliesmummy · 17/03/2011 15:29

I'm really surprised no one has mentioned maisy the mouse, who is odd for a number of reasons, off the top of my head:

  • she has a pet cat who is smaller than her
  • she appears to live alone, cook for herself, put herself to bed etc, yet she goes to nursery
Plus the storylines are non existent. And in most books there is a page with a picture of her on the toilet, and how many titles are about her going to bed/saying goodnight? They are all the same (and eddie looks like he's on something, have you seen his eyes?!
meliesmummy · 17/03/2011 15:36

I do like bear hunt though...

There's a book in our library called mum's late, the cover picture is of a little girl (5ish) looking really sad, ive never read it to dd because it just looks so depressing.

earthpixie · 17/03/2011 15:47

The Very Big Turnip or its incestuous partner The Very Big Pancake.

Saying all those names over and over again with one variation each time makes me want to vom.
