the comment he made to that lad in Jamies Dream School,
was appalling,
(for people who didnt see)
there was no provocation the class was joking around about evolution, about animals are faster and this lad pointed to his muscle ..and Starkey said,

'you're so fat im surprised you can move!'
I felt for the lad, my blood was boiling
when will teachers learn humiliation does not work as a teaching technique!!!

sorry rant over,

oh I think teachers know it, but Starkey isn't a teacher! he's a writer/tv presenter- can't believe he has had much to do with students for a long time.

He has always been incredibly rude.

madamimadam · 03/03/2011 14:34

I think the production team were rubbing their hands with glee to be honest.

(And what Reality said.)

crazygracieuk · 03/03/2011 14:35

e) JO is the only person who would consider Starkey a dream teacher. There are much better candidates out there but they are on different channels like the History Channel so no good for Channel 4.

madamimadam · 03/03/2011 14:37

There are also qualified history teachers too. But who wants to watch them teach, eh? Sad

amiheartless · 03/03/2011 14:44

true, true

Fontsnob · 03/03/2011 14:47

Is anyone actually surprised that being an "expert" doesn't automatically mean being a good teacher. Anyone aside from Cleggaron that is.

amiheartless · 03/03/2011 15:01

wasnt just that hes like an actual evil human being,

picking on a child, for the sake of it, real hard man there (!)

love his little whine 'I will not teach'

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 03/03/2011 15:02

LOL. I have always detested him. Specially recently when he decided to slag off women's history.

I bet Mary Beard will manage it ok though.

bupcakesandcunting · 03/03/2011 15:23

Starkey is an old nobhead who got PWNED by a 15 year old. :)

amiheartless · 03/03/2011 15:26

bless that lads comeback

Chil1234 · 03/03/2011 15:28

Starkey is what's known in the trade as 'a vicious old queen'... Humiliation might not work in a teaching setting but it's his stock in trade and makes for great telly :)

sue52 · 03/03/2011 15:30

The boy he insulted was quick and articulate in his come back. I wonder why such an obviously intelligent young man messed up his own education.

IAmTheCookieMonster · 03/03/2011 15:38

what did he say back?

huntersmum · 03/03/2011 15:41

I went to an all girls grammar in the late sixties and to be honest that sort of comment would not have raised an eyebrow. Chalkboard rubbers, chalk and books would be thrown by certain teachers - that's the way it was and maybe Starkey is still in the sixties. However that's not to say he is right - I would be horrified if I thought throwing books and making personal comments was deemed acceptable in schools today.

talleyrand · 03/03/2011 15:46

on the other hand we do have a dangerous obesity epidemic: perhaps if we as a society were more willing to say to young people: "hey, fatty, lose some weight, why don't you" then perhaps we wouldn't have got to where we are, and perhaps more children could lead happier live encumbered by a layer of blubber.

As it is we seem to spend the first eighteen years of a childs life tiptoeing around them pretending that it's perfectly OK to be fat, which is like a mssive gotcha when they become adults and eventually realise that, hey, it's not so good after all and they wish they were three sizes smaller, and there's a good forum on Mumsnet, you know, they can help you..

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 03/03/2011 15:49

I don't believe teens are overweight because they haven't realised it's not good - they get bombarded with healthy eating info after all.

Chil1234 · 03/03/2011 15:50

"I wonder why such an obviously intelligent young man messed up his own education."

Maybe... because he hadn't been challenged in the past? Not met enough Starkey types telling him to pull his socks up? Motivation depends on the individual and sometimes it takes a crass remark to fire us up. Not everyone is spurred on to succeed with touchy-feely positive reinforcement.

amiheartless · 03/03/2011 15:52

Chil.

he deliberately humilated that boy, to reinforce his own ego the lad at the time was not causing any trouble

OP posts:
Ormirian · 03/03/2011 15:53

Don't know who he is. So tell me to sod off if you like but regardless of whether he thinks he's a teacher or not, that is just plain unkind and rude! i hope someone cooks and eat him whoever he is ...

amiheartless · 03/03/2011 15:54

Jamie Oliver can dish out the justice then lol

OP posts:
ajandjjmum · 03/03/2011 15:55

Didn't it just prove though that someone with great intelligence and knowledge of a subject, doesn't necessarily make a good teacher.
