to question the sanity of those who worship Kurt Cobain/Nirvana?

I must be missing something.

But why is Kurt Cobain such an 'icon'? Why do people think Nirvana are brilliant?

To me, it sounds like depressing nonsense, and I cannot understand what anybody gets from it. And it appears that some people worship Kurt Cobain. What is there about him to worship? From what I can tell, he was a bit rubbish!

But maybe i just don't 'get' it. I have however just been spoken to very rudely by my aunty when I said that the best thing to come out of Nirvana was Dave Grohl forming the Foo Fighters.

Yep I'd rather she liked Rihanna than Kurt Cobain. I'd rather she liked somebody who sang songs about sex, than somebody who sang depressing songs about rape, alcohol and later killed themselves.

"Rihanna's music is upbeat and empowering. Would much rather my little girl was listening to that than the likes of Nirvana and Morrissey"

Shock

Really?

Nah, you're joking right?

No?

SHIT! Confused

Empowering, my arse Hmm.

I my DD ever tries to listen to Rihanna unironically I shall sit on her and forcefeed her the Cure, Nirvana, the Furs, the Smiths and similar meaty stuff until she knows better! So there!

PegsonaNewNose · 18/02/2011 15:15

Ormirian- Quite

lenak · 18/02/2011 15:16

I don't mind Rhianna - I think in her genre she is probably one of the most talented (certainly the most hardworking) but I can't bring myself to see her as a role model - the Eminem song put paid to any chance of that and I'm not a big RnB fan anyway. If you want a real female icon, try Gwen Stefani or even better go back to Nina Simone.

I adored Nirvana as a teenager. Nevermind and SLTS in particular were the anthem of the Why? Generation. I have fond memories of sitting on the hill at Sports Day and about 40 kids all singing their own rendition of SLTS.

I'd much rather my kids be into genres of music that involve real talent - musical instruments, writing their own (sometimes) challenging lyrics and pushing boundaries - not mainstream guff that people only listen to because it is on the Radio One or MTV Playlist 30 times a day.

DD1 (3.5) is off to a good start though - we had Mumford and Sons on in the car the other day and when the Cave came on she declared it was her favourite and started to sing along Grin. She was also having a great time dancing in the kitchen with DH to Arcade Fire.

ChutesTooNarrow · 18/02/2011 15:16

What's your stance on less than cheerful books and films then? Is Bambi out because it's depressing? Are hundreds of classic 'depressing' films disregarded in favour of watching Showgirls?

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 18/02/2011 15:19

Suicide is not a lifestyle choice you know. It is the culmination of serious mental health problems that the person is not in control of. So lay off the judging please. Angry Sad

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 15:19

Gwen Stefani - fab.

Guffaw at Showgirls!

My 8 and 5 year old singing that "whips and chains excite them" whilst gyrating like lapdancers? Call me a prude but that makes me a little uncomfortable.

StarlightPrincess · 18/02/2011 15:21

"Guffaw at Showgirls!"

Showgirls is a classic- it's so bad it's good! Grin

lenak · 18/02/2011 15:22

I'd rather she liked somebody who sang songs about sex than somebody who sang depressing songs about rape, alcohol

Rape Me wasn't actually about rape you know - it was about emotional rape and being taken advantage of in a way that was saying I don't like it.

However, Love the Way You Lie, was genuinely about justifying domestic violence and abuse.

Are you really saying you would much rather a child liked and sang music about enjoying being hit by her partner and asking for more?

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 18/02/2011 15:22

To be fair - showgirls is quite depressing.

If there was no art about rape and alcohol that would cut out quite a lot of stuff - most of the classics, Shakespeare, almost all of opera, jazz and blues, a large wedge of modern poetry and fiction not to mention the entire back story of Eastenders Grin

I personally admire Rhianna's commitment to advising young women of how to keep themselves dry in wet weather.

Bloodymary · 18/02/2011 15:23

I am raising my DGD (I am 56, she is 5)
She listens to (among many others) REM, Blondie, Nirvana, Smiths, Chilli peppers.
When she is older and talks about them at school her peers will not have a clue.
Ooodps, must introduce her to younger music Hmm

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 15:27

Nah, Bloodymary, I'm 35 and my kids listen to similar. Stereophonics and Kings of Leon are also favourites of theirs. She'll go through her "liking crap music" phase in her own time! (Oh how I loved New Kids on the Block Grin)

Bloodymary · 18/02/2011 15:29

Thanks MollysChambers Smile
Tho I have awful memories of New Kids on the Block from her Mother!!!

tethersend · 18/02/2011 15:31

Sorry Tondelayo, that was me- I was trying to illustrate why Cobain's/Curtis' suicide meant I could not see them as an icon but as a flawed human being, like the rest of us.

Phrased it badly, apologies for insensitivity.

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 15:31

Yes, in retrospect they weren't very good were they? I was a little obsessed. BlushGrin

mozette · 18/02/2011 15:32

I

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 15:35

It was Donnie for me!

Ormirian · 18/02/2011 15:35

I used to love 'miserable' music. My parents hated it! I bought myself a copy of 17 Seconds by the Cure and was playing it when dad came in - 'what's that?' he asked. I told him it was the Cure. He replied that it sounded more like The Symptoms.

The only musical joke my dad has ever made Grin

Funnily enough I am listening to on my IPhone atm having downloaded it to replace my ageing vinyl copy.

PigValentine · 18/02/2011 15:35

I didn't like NKOTB Grin at the time but I do now have quite a large crush on Donny Wahlberg...

mozette · 18/02/2011 15:35

arf at Ormirian's Dad!

PigValentine · 18/02/2011 15:36

Mollyschambers you can tell you were a fan...you spelled his name correctly!

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 18/02/2011 15:36

Hey not just you Tethersend - it's hard not to make judgments about suicide - the closer you are, the hardest it is as well. Sad

I wonder if the OP will let her kid do Hemingway or Sylvia Plath at school Smile

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 18/02/2011 15:36

Didn't mind SLTS.

Prefer MetallicA tho tbh

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 15:38

I don't like him at all now...

I had a scrapbook where I used to keep all my NKOTB/Donnie cuttings from Smash Hits. I think loved him.

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 15:38

I think I loved him.
