For fun which trends did you have at school

I was thinking last night about all the different trends we had at school and how they are nothing compared to today's (iPhones pandora bracelets etc). To start off a few that I can remeber from my school days , naf co 54 coats ( nasty and cheap looking but cost a fortune) every other person in the school que had one.
Plastic dummies worn as necklaces (weird one that)
bleached fringes so ugly but we thought we looked great.
Light up trainers
all of which got banned after a while .

Playing spit or shithead at lunchtime.
Got quite violent IIRC

Neighbours addictions

Wearing tiny little cropped-tops or vests over a huge white shirt

Not only people self-harming, but scratching their boyfriend's name into their arm with a compass! Shock

MrsDeidreIppy · 14/02/2011 12:42

Pogs
Yoyos
Ponchos (in 6th form)
Using a Jane Norman (or other fashionable plastic bag) instead of a school bag

Limara · 14/02/2011 12:44

LtEveDallas my 10/20 was Arle.

Shooter doesn't ring a bell?
People I knew were:
wheelbase
bingo board
crazy coyote
Zed
Pink Floyd
Speedy

The list is endless!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 14/02/2011 12:45

Belcher chains - the thicker the better
Keeper rings - as above
Russian wedding rings - three colour gold.
I am obviously a bit older than a lot of people, I can remember the green shield stamp shop becoming Argos and opening a whole world of Elizabeth Duke.
Before that, people would look longingly in the window of H. Samuel

greenlotus · 14/02/2011 12:48

Baggy everything: shirts, dungarees, jumpers. It was 1994 before I nervously bought a fitted T shirt.
If you wore glasses they were large, round, plastic and brightly coloured
Cobalt blue everything, even mascara
Drainpipe jeans, thank goodness for invention of stretch denim
Perms, mullets or a combination of both cf Henry from Neighbours
Jackie and Just Seventeen
Ties either too thin or too fat
Walkman (tape cassette)
Fishnet tights and kitten heel stilettos.

Eglu · 14/02/2011 12:49

Bottle caps on shoes (bros emoticon)

Head sports bags worn on the shoulder with one handle.

Reebok socks - 2 pairs to be really cool, slouched down.

When older in school:

Dr. Martens
Long skirts to the floor
army bags

we had a NAFF.CO 54 jacket backlash at our school, anyone daft enough to wear it would get

'nanny Annie fishy fanny, condoms only 54p'
chanted at them

OMG I so remember hearing this shouted around school every other minute!

Had forgotten about the Shellys/JD Sports type carrier bags.

We used to walk around and rub our chins, yelling "beard-os" when we thought someone was talking rubbish. Some of the boys had a strange obsession with "corn" Hmm

Yes to the Head bag, but only if blue, pink or purple for the girls.

French crop hair cuts for the boys (pmsl)

Going out on a Thursday night to a local nightclub, getting in and getting served, rolling out of there at 3am and getting up 3 hours later to get ready and go to school Grin

Yes to sovereign rings and t-bar chains and belcher chains.

Will try and think up some more!

SleepyCaz · 14/02/2011 13:17

Secret Slattern Did we go to the same school?!

Quilted bomber jackets
Black opaque tights with short denim shorts over the top
Bodysuits
Very skinny school ties.

SleepyCaz · 14/02/2011 13:18

Argos hologram eye pendants!

idobelieveinfairies · 14/02/2011 13:36

Jelly shoes and bags
fish net vests (or whatever they were called)
braces
Large silk bows in hair
illuminous socks
diidiboppers?? those headbands with springs and glitter balls/hearts/feathers and bells attatched to them

what else!!!!

SecretSlattern · 14/02/2011 13:39

Yes to bodysuits with the horrid little poppers! And the hologram pendant!

I went to SJR

SecretSlattern · 14/02/2011 13:40

Taz and Freddo chocolates when they were 10p

adamschic · 14/02/2011 13:57

I remember Clackers and Bay City Rollers Tartan trouser/shirts. Not that I wore one.

Harrington Jackets ring a bell, what were they like?

DrNortherner · 14/02/2011 14:07

And those cladaugh (sp?) earings with your ear pierced about 6 times......

Anniepops · 14/02/2011 14:09

Woo - this is scary stuff!
I am thinking:
Chelsea Girl
"Sportpax" P.E. bags ( drawstring pvc bags with a picture of a swimmer, footballer etc which were "customised" by having your name written on them in indelible pen)
"Babe" perfume
20/20 !
Disco 45 and Chart songwords magazines (and groups of girls sat in class singing along)
"Directions" multicoloured hair dye and "Sun In"
CB radio
Fancying boys who wore "Insignia" toiletry , products and not being able to get the song from the tv ad out of our heads!
Frilly collar shirts

PaisleyLeaf · 14/02/2011 14:19

Did any of you ever have a long sock with a tennis ball in it? You stand with you back against a wall and bounce it either side of you, between your legs, over your shoulder etc.

Fernie3 · 14/02/2011 14:24

Jelly shoes
Skipping things that you twirled around your legs and t count how many time you jumped it.(until they were banned)
Hula hoops
Yo-yos (until they were banned)
Anything take that.

Plonker · 14/02/2011 14:43

Love this thread!

DrNortherner - you must be the same age as me because I found myself nodding enthusiastically at your whole list Grin

PavlovtheCat · 14/02/2011 14:49

great thread, pretty much what has been said...

kickers
wallabies
Fila boots.
thoes t-shirts that went another colour when wet.
Backcombed fringes
Puffa jackets. Dont ever seem to have gone away!
souvereign rings

lospolloshermanos · 14/02/2011 14:52

OP I remember the dummy phase, so odd

over plucking eyebrows

pokerstraight hair

mippy · 14/02/2011 15:37

At my secondary school:

Sportswear, all the time.
Shag bands
Fringes that were kind of circular, made to stick out from the scalp with gel
Kickers (which our school banned)
Fancyign boys with 'curtains'
Eclipse clothing
'Rock The Dancefloor'/happy hardcore compilations
Going to the local nightclub and getting 'fingered' in the loos by older boys.

I did not indulge in any of this because I thought it was all a massive pile of wank.

Whatnamechange · 14/02/2011 16:05

mippy we also fancied boys with curtains , the lad next door to me had curtains and I fancied him sooo much that to impress him I spent my birthday money on happy hardcore compiltation tape and played it loud so he would think I was really cool , I hated every second of it since I was deeply into rock/alternative music and therefore labelled a goth/freak .

OP posts:
raspberryshake · 14/02/2011 16:42

Navy ribbed tights with short White ankle socks over
Swapping sequins/garbage pail kids
Long socks rolled down
Hair pulled back so tight it lifted your eyes
Fringes hairsprayed straight up
Carrying everything that wouldn't fit in your schoolbag in a River Island carrier bag, circa 1991!

Probably loads more, but I am getting old!

DrNortherner · 14/02/2011 16:49

Bork at getting 'fingered' in the loos by the older boys......

mumbar · 14/02/2011 16:54

DrNortherner think you must have been in school when I was Grin

Also remember:

tights with socks over the top
rolling down long socks - literally rolling!
Hair mascara
those hair things that twist the ponytail up and through itself
laces that were curly and you just pulled not tied.
