I was thinking last night about all the different trends we had at school and how they are nothing compared to today's (iPhones pandora bracelets etc). To start off a few that I can remeber from my school days , naf co 54 coats ( nasty and cheap looking but cost a fortune) every other person in the school que had one.
Plastic dummies worn as necklaces (weird one that)
bleached fringes so ugly but we thought we looked great.
Light up trainers
all of which got banned after a while .

OP posts:
ChippyMinton · 14/02/2011 17:01

Mainly hairstyles:
Farrah Fawcett flicks
Purdey cuts
Perms
Then later those horrible rats tails. And coloured streaks - blue, red, purple.

Giving wedgies

And smoking dope

DrNortherner · 14/02/2011 17:02

I'm 35 this year mumbar, picked up my GCSE results in summer of '92.

Remember wearing crop tops instead of bras, must be able to see them through your school shirt to look cool....

DrNortherner · 14/02/2011 17:05

Also ski type jackets in horrendous bright colours as a winter coat and thick padded headband type things.

Those plastic jelly bags that came in various sizes and wearing pony tails with loads of scrunchies but pulling out two bits of hair either side and using the curling tongs on these bits.....

tulpe · 14/02/2011 17:16

OMG so funny to read about using mobiles at school. I left school in 1987!!

Loving the trip down memory lane :) We had:

jelly shoes & bags
lace fingerless gloves (v Madonna)
black plimsolls - the kind my DCs wear for PE now!
gladiator sandals
brogues worn with two pairs of socks - one thigh high pair in white and a second pair in navy pushed down to look like legwarmers.
shaggy perms (crusted with mousse and Hard Rock hairspray)
Impulse body spray
Batwing jumpers and coats
All items of clothing had to be either "electric blue" "jade" or "cerise"
Athena posters
Twilight Teaser (Boots 17) & Iron Maiden (Miss Selfridge) Lipstick
Watching Top of The Pops on a Thursday evening
Endless debates about who was the father of Michelle's baby Wink

FreeButtonBee · 14/02/2011 17:19

river island bags
levi jeans (had to be 501s)
levi semin shirt (worn with above jeans! Bleurgh)
DM boots
army surplus bags as school bags, you know those small hessian ones.
fruit of the loom sweatshirts - why?
cans and cans of bodyspray
friendship bracelets - I even learnt how to make them
rolled up school skirts
tin pencil cases which you scratched the pattern off with your compass.
Hair was always boring - Irish catholic grammer school rules

I remember girls wearing flesh coloured tights in PE under their sport uniform - but they were the easy girls who spent most of their time sneaking a fag and watching the boys play football.

FreeButtonBee · 14/02/2011 17:21

Mumbar - hair mascara! Yes! My best mate's mum was a hairdresser - we went wild for that stuff.

Also kickers shoes - they were shite. I still begged for them

ChippyMinton · 14/02/2011 17:21

We had to cover our exercise books with paper. Pages from Jackie magazine were v.popular.

And colouring your hair with the free Shaders & Toners that came with the mag.

tulpe · 14/02/2011 17:23

going out dressed like a middle aged woman (permed hair, explosion in a paint factory make up, shoulder pads in top/dress, cheapo £4.99 black stilettos from Jonathan James.........!!)

Pernod & black or martini & lemonade (obviously bought by the obligatory 2 years older than you boyfriend)

tulpe · 14/02/2011 17:24

Chippy - I loved Toners & SHaders. And colour mousse :o

Yes to covering school books with posters. Bizarrely I still remember my german book being covered in Spandau Ballet! And Paul Young featured on my maths book!

mumbar · 14/02/2011 17:25

DrNortherner I'm 31 this year and got results 1996, so yes would have been lower secondary as you were higher. I expect I was thinking I was cool trying out these 'trends' whilst you were feeling proud about setting them. Grin

Remember the ponytail with multiple scrunchies and the bits pulled out too.

onceamai · 14/02/2011 17:26

Clackers in primary
Purdy haircuts in the LV

ChippyMinton · 14/02/2011 17:29

tulpe - a girl in my class with lovely natural blonde hair used the red one by mistake and had pink hair for a month!

tulpe · 14/02/2011 17:33

LOL!

Reminds me of an incident where we were sat in biology labs doing a test. The bunsen burners were turned on to the safety flame. Despite this, the awful stench of burning hair started to fill the air - some girl with a right Phil Oakey hair cut had inadvertently leaned into the flame and set her fire alight.

Considering the copious amounts of hairspray and other chemicals on the average teen in the 80's, I am surprised it didn't happen more often!

tulpe · 14/02/2011 17:34

Religiously reading the problem pages of Jackie (Cathy & Claire) or Just Seventeen (was it Irma Kurtz? or was she writing for Cosmo then?)

izzybiz · 14/02/2011 17:36

DrNorthener You're the same age as me too, we had all the same trends at our school!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 14/02/2011 17:37

I remember all the girls started washing their hair with coconut shampoo and conditioner Hmm everywhere you went smelled of coconut.

and about 100 thin metal bangles up one arm. that was popular for a bit.

doing your tie so that only about an inch showed.

apart from that, I can't really remember. I'm sure there were loads but I never really took much notice.

ChippyMinton · 14/02/2011 17:40

Phil Oakey used to catch the same bus as me to 6th form. Well if it wasn't him it was his twin LOL.

SweetestThing · 14/02/2011 17:41

At school in the 1970s and remember:

covering your books in old wallpaper
pop-a-pens
clackers
David Cassidy/Donny Osmond fierce rivalry
Writing all over your schoolbag and pinning badges on them
Doing big puffed-up block capital writing (can't think of how else to describe it!)
Platform shoes
American Tan tights were the first shade anyone ever bought
Buying scraps of suede and making chokers and belts
Jackie magazine
Bringing a (forbidden) transistor radio to school and listening to the chart show on Radio 1 on Tuesday - think it was the Johnny Walker show.

mippy · 14/02/2011 17:46

Oh, forgot: Constance Carroll 'translucent' (orange) face powder.

There is a photo of me and my friend, who everyone fancied more. She is literally the colour of orange fondant, with the rest of her body pale (this was pre fake-tan but post-bronzer) and clad in a purple lycra tube top. She also had a sovereign for every finger.

crazycatlady · 14/02/2011 17:47

loving being called 'too young' by piprabbit. You have made my day!

(turning 32 this year and feeling deeply uncool)

sharbie · 14/02/2011 17:48

loafers with ankle socks
purdey cuts and then rats tails plaits
i used to wear a very lovely pair of knee length grey woolly socks with t bar beige suede sandals (so cool) Grin

Wishingonastar7 · 14/02/2011 17:53

Primary school

Leggings with feet straps
Velvet headbands with your name on written in glitter

Canvas shoes
Turkey twizzlers for school dinner

Don't remember as many from high school, ones I do though are:

Wallabies
Impulse/boots vanilla musk
Scented gel pens
Sunny Delight :o

tulpe · 14/02/2011 17:57

Body Shop Dewberry perfume
Constance Carroll cola flavoured lipgloss

gilbonzothesecretpsychoduck · 14/02/2011 17:58

propercrimbo and jellybeans I think we went to school together!

DrNortherner · 14/02/2011 18:19

Yes to Constance Carrol translucent face powder. IIRC it stank!
