For fun which trends did you have at school

I was thinking last night about all the different trends we had at school and how they are nothing compared to today's (iPhones pandora bracelets etc). To start off a few that I can remeber from my school days , naf co 54 coats ( nasty and cheap looking but cost a fortune) every other person in the school que had one.
Plastic dummies worn as necklaces (weird one that)
bleached fringes so ugly but we thought we looked great.
Light up trainers
all of which got banned after a while .

Oh yes, and my Hatful of Hollow T-shirt and blue 501s, with a cord or suede jacket

littlewish · 15/02/2011 13:51

Wham bars and cherry lips eaten at the bus stop.

Over the knee socks held up with elastic lace and a short skirt or a very long skirt.

Covering books with wrapping paper - flowers stars etc. Writing crap on the inside covers.

Fountain pens were cool for a while with the girls, the boys would get hold of them and flick ink everywhere!

Skinny ties

DesertOrchid · 15/02/2011 13:53

From primary school...

Weird jelly rats and spiders that stretched out and stuck to things - and eventually got covered in fluff and dirt and looked even more disgusting

'French' skipping, with great big bits of elastic round your ankles

Folding paper to make those open and shut finger choice game things

Choose your own adventure books, and the 'game' ones you played with dice.

From secondary school

Record bags
Red level canvas shoes
Big fat black sensible shoes
Telephone wire keyrings

RIZZ0 · 15/02/2011 14:01

Ahh, neon friendship bracelets takes me back!

For us it was an unfeaseably large quiff, preferably coupled with a bad perm.

CheerfulYank · 15/02/2011 16:05

When I was about 14 it was all about the grunge look...both boys and girls had shredded jeans and baggy flannel plaid shirts, which you wore over your Pearl Jam or Nirvana t-shirt, naturally. Ugh!

madwomanintheattic · 15/02/2011 16:09

doc marten boots with as many holes as you could... and for extra cool points, rainbow stitching.
i had a huge red jumper and black baggy trousers which i rolled up above my boots.
i wore a blardy black trilby as well.

roller disco.
global hypercolour
mismatched neon socks
rara skirts

and why did they have to mention cb ffs? i had successfully blanked all memory of that particular hobby only to have it all come flooding back with the mere mention of twigs, candles, eyeballs and bleeding 20s. gah.

dd1 is 11. i am now petrified she's going to turn into me.

madwomanintheattic · 15/02/2011 16:11

should add that i went to see iron maiden and anthrax. the chances of me being caught with grolsch tops on my shoes were minimal. Grin

(on that note, must be really old as after 11 pages i've just worked out that shag bands are actually bracelets, not, er, bands you listen to...) Blush

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 15/02/2011 16:11

Tartan Bay City Roller Socks. Platform shoes that looked like built up surgical boots (they seem to be back I think!)

IntergalacticHussy · 15/02/2011 16:23

this is interesting - you can tell how old we all are

i'm of the nafnaf coat/plastic dummy generation

also

benetton duffle bag (green)
folding your school skirt over 3 times at the top to allure the boys with curtain haircuts
pogs for the boys, and those stupid card things (how much power does your ork have?)
black platform school shoes (banned officially)
brown, glittery, lipstick
plastic flowery necklace to show i was an indie kid

at primary school it was global hypercolour, neon shellsuits and trainers with 4 sets of laces. (Fila, i think mine were)
oh, and slip on shoes and rolled down socks (which i'm amazed to see dd1 and her friends doing 20 years on)

madwomanintheattic · 15/02/2011 16:25

what are pogs btw?

thefirstMrsDeVere · 15/02/2011 16:25

Pleated knee length, bottle green full skirts.
Burgandy waffle jumpers.
Burgandy hair
Sleeves that came down over your fingers.
Horrible flat shoes with plastic jewels stuck on them.
Red Tartan shirts worn with black cords.

I could be a 13 year old describing these things. Alas I am 43. Even the most crappest trends eventually return.

GrannyMo · 15/02/2011 16:29

Late 60/70s
Rings with big fake stones that you wore over long silky gloves. Black kohl eye-shadow, white lipstick, white nail varnish. Bell on a chain and fringed belt worn as headband, cotton mini dresses that zipped up the front. Paper dresses. Crochet trouser suits. Jumpsuits, hotpants. In the winter, mini dresses - without benefit of todays skinny denims or leggings - worn under pavement skimming maxi coats.

SecretNutellaFix · 15/02/2011 16:32

Wearing white slouch socks over black tights. Even in summer.

NorthernGobshite · 15/02/2011 16:50

Sun in in hair Blush
Grolsch tops on shoes
short hair with a 'rats tail' (little pointless length of long hair at back)
Electric blue snood and cerise beret.....
how embarrassing!

As you can tell, I grew up in the 70's/80's

CheerfulYank · 15/02/2011 17:01

We did the dummy on a string too, and little girl's barettes in our hair (when we were teenagers, mind you.) I had a particularly fetching set featuring Snow White that I clipped in and thought was beyond cool.

MrsSatsuma · 15/02/2011 17:10

Primary:
Skippits (either the pricey version that counted the number of times you'd skipped, or a simple ball on a plastic rope)
Shag bands (although I didn't know what the name meant until much later)
Trolls
Doc Martins (we were a bit young but the older kids wore them)
White blouses with big frills around collar and cuffs (for parties)

Secondary:
Adidas jogging bottoms
Morgan shoulder bag for school
Kickers
Collection 2000 nail varnish
Boots 17 or Rimmel make up
White Musk or Dewberry from Body Shop
Impulse body sprays
Hair crimpers
Spice Girls CD

NowtWorthOwt · 15/02/2011 18:04

dolls that wet themselves and 'drank' milk
white musk perfume
nike air max trainers - again too poor to have these
thoes bags from famous army stores everyone decorated them with marker pens
iron brew bars and jolly ranchers

scottishmummy · 15/02/2011 18:08

lots of brands that we couldnt afford so i had the barrras knock off fakes

SweetestThing · 15/02/2011 18:14

Did anyone else have a puzzle ring? You had to put it together and wear it.

Also books with pictures of children from Africa, India etc for you to choose a child and sponsor them.

TooImmature2BMum · 15/02/2011 18:19

Impulse body spray circa 1995-7 - Vanilla Kisses, O2, Vanilla something else...
Charlie Red, Charlie White and Charlie Sunshine
Loafers
Wearing age 4 hot pink T-shirts under a massive plaid shirt - the smaller the T-shirt the better.

Clueless and associated looks (over-knee socks etc)
Wearing cycling shorts under your school skirt! I'd forgotten that one.

Name necklaces where you went and bought silver letters and threaded them on a black cord
Tamogotchis
Playing Snake on Nokia phones
Bootcut trousers/jeans that got lower and lower rise...coupled with teeny tiny handkerchief tops

lottiejenkins · 15/02/2011 18:22

This was late 70's early 80's......
Kickers boots and shoes (i was never allowed them only Clarks shoes (the shame Blush)
Rubix (sp?) Cube
Deely boppers (on the head)

mumsgotatum · 15/02/2011 18:22

Leg warmers
Flurescent (can't spell) socks
Smelly rubbers (erasers)
Those plastic bags...can't think of their name, but they were moulded plastic bags with cut out shapes. rather like them actually. Does anyone know the name?
Pixie boots
Those weird shoes that were made of felt, (very unflattering), looked like cornish pasties on your feet
