I was thinking last night about all the different trends we had at school and how they are nothing compared to today's (iPhones pandora bracelets etc). To start off a few that I can remeber from my school days , naf co 54 coats ( nasty and cheap looking but cost a fortune) every other person in the school que had one.
Plastic dummies worn as necklaces (weird one that)
bleached fringes so ugly but we thought we looked great.
Light up trainers
all of which got banned after a while .

This thread is great! I have literally chuckled all the way through it!

I still have an old bottle of Exclamation perfume somewhere and as soon as I sniff it it brings back all the memories of early teen angst and waiting eagerly for my copy of Just 17 whilst wearing my jelly shoes and listening to my Stock Aitken & Waterman compilation tape

Can I just say DrNorthener I am v.jealous you went to see Big Fun and Sonia :)

SweetestThing · 15/02/2011 09:30

Just remembered another couple from primary school - collecting scraps (you used to buy sheets of them, small pictures with different themes, like animals, religious pictures etc ) and put them between the pages of a book and then swap with your friends.

Also something we called French knitting, with an old thread bobbin, four nails hammered into it and you wound wool round and 'knitted' a big long piece of...nothing, really!

(really showing my age now!) :)

kreecherlivesupstairs · 15/02/2011 09:39

Sweetest thing, DD has one of those, I actually bought it in a shop. She was bored as soon as it was out of the box Angry
A boy coming out of the toilets at our youth club and sticking his finger in a few drinks. A lovely kind offer to let everyone taste his girlfriend [vom]

Constance Carroll was a market stall brand, as Collection 2000 was then. I felt really cool when I actually started buying make0up from Boots...

although our town was about the size of Kingston, we never had Topshop or anythign like that, but people queue at 4am for the Next sales (I think they sold one item of clothing per month in between seasons...)

Kouros!! My friend and I used to go into town specially to spray ourselves with gallons of the stuff from the aftershave counter at Debenhams, and then hang around outside HMV in our ripped jeans, tie-dyed band t-shirts and denim jackets with band names and autographs all over them. Also those fake suede boots with tassles and feathers hanging off the sides.

What was the name of those t-shirts that changed colour as they warmed up?

spiderlight · 15/02/2011 11:51

Global Hypercolour!!

mippy · 15/02/2011 11:56

We didn't get a HMV until '99. I did lust after a Global Hypercolour T-shirt in C+A. I thought I was well cool when my mum bought me some cut off Levi shorts from there.

hmmSleep · 15/02/2011 12:20

Ha, those Global Hypercolour t-shirts just used to show up people's sweat patches!

tulpe · 15/02/2011 12:46

Pepe "Betty" jeans (think of the most unflattering tapered leg jeans possible......that's what we wore!)
Benetton rugby shirts
Benetton plastic duffel bag
Crinkle "silk" (ie polyester!) shirts with really long shirt tails, worn buttoned up to the collar with a gawjus diamante brooch!!

OMG, we really did have the best and worst fashions in the early 80s!

tulpe · 15/02/2011 12:49

Thinkofanumber - we wore duster coats as well. Particularly in 6th Form when they would be coupled with standard issue:

The Cure/The Smiths t-shirt
M&S grandad style cardi (now called "boyfriend" cardis)
Levis - rolled up at the ankle to show off Burlington socks and Doc Martens (boots or shoes......or if you were really cool then you wore the vegan version Hmm )

redpanda13 · 15/02/2011 12:58

Oooh tulpe I dressed like that. You have brought it all flooding back -
I had oxblood coloured Doc Marten shoes and black Doc Marten boots.
2nd hand blazers worn with rolled up levis and Burlington socks
Always had to read latest NME and ID magazine
Spent weekends hanging around indie record shops and a vintage clothes shop called Flip in Glasgow

DownyEmerald · 15/02/2011 13:24

Thanks Sixtyfootdoll I'd forgotten the army surplus bags. I think I do still have one somewhere.

Pixie boots

Pinafore dresses

Short school ties - so the long bit was in danger of showing beneath your skirt.

Some Hush Puppy shoes that had small holes all over them - came in grey and burgundy (the two on trend colours). I had grey. The shoe version of those mesh vests Kajagoogoo wore?

Hacking jackets - mine was navy - classy (and I did actually ride most people didn't)

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 15/02/2011 13:39

long skirts with a long, probably vintage, petticoat underneath, stripey tights (green and black so that they sort of were school uniform) and 8 hole Doc Martins.

fitflops · 15/02/2011 13:40

Harrington Jackets
skinny jeans with red or white piping up the side
Pixie boots
