A, but I always ask my parents freinds how they like to be addressed by my children, was the way I was brought up.

treas · 13/02/2011 10:59

A - christian name

I get to call the children by their christian name so why shouldn't they have the same privilege. Respect is not in what you are called but in how you are behaved towards.

Tortington · 13/02/2011 10:59

B

my kids friends laugh-teenagers - but i do insist on it

Tortington · 13/02/2011 11:00

i think it is a sign of respect and good manners.

bibbitybobbityhat · 13/02/2011 11:00

A.

Absolutely cannot stand adult cold callers and sales people using my christian name, though.

Itsjustafleshwound · 13/02/2011 11:01

A is the 'norm' these days, but I grew up using B (and prefer it!)

gapbear · 13/02/2011 11:03

Christian name at home, Mrs Bear at school Grin

But when I was little, parents's friends were addressed as 'Mrs'.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 13/02/2011 11:03

A

Although I make my children call other adults Mr/Mrs surname until they are told otherwise.

Itsjustafleshwound · 13/02/2011 11:03

They are your friends not your children's friends and so should be treated with some respect. If the adult said Call me X not Mrs B then I would, but I wouldn't decide what to call my parent's friends

Georgimama · 13/02/2011 11:03

As stated on other thread, I would infinitely prefer it if B was the normal state of affairs, but as it isn't in an effort not to be a freak show I tolerate A and inwardly shudder.

I am only talking about children though, our friends' 18 and 16 year old sons call me first name and I would think it odd if they didn't.

IWantAnotherBaby · 13/02/2011 11:05

A, through my own preference, but as I am also the GP for most of DS's friends and their families, they tend to call me Dr Iwantanotherbaby, or "DS's Mum". So I answer to anything really. When they get to know DS really well, and are coming round the whole time then I usually specifically invite them to call me by my Christian name.

albertcamus · 13/02/2011 11:05

B - I've worked in FE where the students called staff by their first names & we called each other by first name in front of them, which seemed fine ... but now I'm teaching in school I much prefer 'Miss' or 'Mrs' (either acceptable!), the students need to be reminded of that distance/authority thing which gives them more security than familiarity. It took me a couple of years to adapt, but I really find they prefer it. In a home context, my now grown DCs' friends called me by first name, which was fine, but just that tiny bit awkward, so would definitely go for B :)

BiscuitEmoticon · 13/02/2011 11:06

A, but I'm usually x's mum until they know me well enough. I don't like Mrs much, just sounds stale.
