I'm not veggie (luckily!) but just noticed this on the carton. Do all infant formulas contain fish oil? Bizarre

Hmmm, there are some interesting links on this website about the general dodgyness of formula companies and the adding of DHA and AHAs to their infant milk...

formula companies still being a bit dodgy by making unsubstantiated claims

this in particular - naughty Heinz!

RubyBuckleberry · 17/02/2011 13:08

The 2010 study you linked to did not include breastfed infants - don't you think that is a bit rubbish, particularly given the marketing line 'closest/closer to breastmilk' being rolled out due to the inclusion of long chain fatty acids?

fracturedrainbow · 17/02/2011 13:22

I agree - I have a fish allergy, luckily my dd doesn't

@shinymoon - agree. Maybe we "failure mums" Hmm who don't or can't breastfeed should super early wean our children??? Oh. No. Wait, we'd get told we were wrong to do that also.

Apologies, didn't actually intend to go off on mini rant there, esp as I'm new to MN (Good way to make friends Blush) but I do get very passionate when it always comes down to breastfeeding or being the ultimate uber earth mum fgs! As long as your child is healthy, happy and loved it really doesn't matter if you - breast or bottle, buggy or sling, co-sleep or control cry. No one way suits all children, parent, lifestyle or circumstance. It is hard enough to be a parent without all the oneupmanship and smugness that goes on (and we all do it to greater or lesser extents)

:( ok, sorry, got on my soapbox.....I'll get my coat......

RubyBuckleberry · 17/02/2011 13:26

i did read somewhere that it is those fed formula that should be weaned earlier, as good food is better than the formula itself...

I haven't read the whole thread but in answer to a couple of the posts. The DHA and AHA are present in breast milk so the formula is just trying to duplicate the fat properties of human breast milk (it isn't in cow's milk). Some companies use long chain PUFAs from algae and these would be suitable for veggies.

fracturedrainbow · 17/02/2011 14:01

@Rubybuckleberry There's so much conficting info out there that we only really retain the bits that fit with our ideology, the most recent findings publishedd by the BMJ (Jan this year) advise breast fed babies to be weaned before 6 months as later weaning can increase the chance of food allergies an iron deficiencies. So none of us can win on this front Wink

fracturedrainbow · 17/02/2011 14:02

oooh, just noticed some terrible spelling in my last post - sorry!

fracturedrainbow - that was an opinion piece Hmm. the evidence tells us that iron deficiencies are rare in breastfed babies - if the mother has seriously low iron in pregnancy it may be an issue, and as for allergies, a European review i read did say that wheat before seven months to prevent gluten allergies and meat/protein is very important (not just mushed up carrot) at six months and onwards... (or somewhere around middle of the first year dependent on the child!)

rollittherecollette haha i didn't make it up but yes be skeptical as i can't remember where i read it...

altinkum you've been through so much with your ds, i could say chill out but you'd probably throw something virtual at me, so just have a Wine instead Grin

MissyKLo · 17/02/2011 19:14

Gosh altinkum you really do go through so much you brave lady!

Hi, I am new to this. I have seen your discussion on fish ingredient in baby milks and I think that SMA does not add fish ingredient (as cannot see it on SMA can). Hope this helps smile
