I'm not veggie (luckily!) but just noticed this on the carton. Do all infant formulas contain fish oil? Bizarre

First of all, Leonie I do think you cross the line. You are nasty and over the top and you are making breast feeders, particularly those who care about the subject look like fucking nutters. It's embarrassing. I wish I didn't have to be associated with you.
I used to think along similar, if less maniacal, lines when I first posted on MN and do you know what? I have listened to other people's stories and am learning to see this from their perspective. Consequently I am not entirely a naive zealot anymore.

I had to work pretty hard to get breastfeeding to be a success. My nipples peeled a lot, I didn't have good enough support and I had to cut out most dairy and all caffeine and chow down the oatcakes and fenugreek but I did it, and I am proud of that.

I feel bad when people say it doesn't matter what you feed them, cos that makes me look stupid, when I'm just proud that I managed to do what I could for my son, including a lot of sacrifices.

I know that other people did what they could, and as much as I don't think we should dismiss those who weren't able to bf (even those who didn't want to) I wish that some of them wouldn't dismiss me either.

Leonie, I think it's possible to be proud of what you've been able to achieve and to give facts about breastfeeding out without having to put ffers down.

Yes, you do have a lot of power, you are vocal on these threads, you are the breastfeeding nazi that everyone talks about and you are damaging breastfeeding support.

I think breastfeeding matters. But it isn't the only thing that matters.
You seem to take it out of all context, which just looks stupid.

Just as an aside, I have no idea how I was fed as a baby, it really doesn't matter to me.
I can guarantee most of your children won't give a flying fuck either.
They will remember cuddles, stories, holidays, playing in the park and all the other things that are important to children.
Stop stressing and arguing about something which they will have no memory of.

twirly, DS is getting on for 3 now, so likely to have some memory of it I'd have thought.

Leonie, trolls certainly do make people cry.

FFS, have you not heard the term 'breastfeeding nazi' before? Hmm

RubyBuckleberry · 16/02/2011 21:48

ZepherineDrouhin, there is also this study that it doesn't have any effect on visual ecuity, in fact it has better at some stage in development.

this is interesting too

and this one sums it up in a way

I am quite interested in the transparency issue. Just putting fish on a label is quite ambiguous, especially as the 'fish' might be algae apparently. And I know that fermented fungus is used to cultivate the oils too. I think that formula companies should have to more rigorously test their products and provide less biased details. Like they only need a GRAS certificate because of the way the product is categorised or something. I don't know, they just seem so dodgy to me!

Breastfeeding Bore would perhaps be more accurate.

TimeWasting · 16/02/2011 21:53

I'm not calling you a breastfeeding nazi. I'm saying that your posts are exactly the sort of thing they are referring to. Not just caring about breastfeeding, but making other people feel like shit when they couldn't.

RubyBuckleberry · 16/02/2011 21:59

the last post on this page - the mind boggles

pigletmania · 16/02/2011 22:01

TCOB I have not said anything nasty, and have tried to put my point across in open and non derogatory way.

hazeyjane · 16/02/2011 22:04

Of course it matters what we feed our children.

There is a big difference between feeling proud of what you have achieved, and having the attitude that those who haven't achieved what you have, just haven't tried hard enough/made excuses/not put in 110% etc etc. Most of my friends have breastfed their babies, some relatively easily and some after real battles, not one of them comes across in this way. Being proud doesn't make people feel guilty, but saying things like,

"..if i can do it, then there is no excuse for people throwing in the towel because it hurts a little bit or its a bit inconvenient." does.

Calling you a nazi is uncalled for, but then referring to soy formula as evil, and using phrases like, "i do indeed feel sorry for babies plugged into bottles of enterobacter sakazakii and cow's milk and fish eyes."
is also uncalled for.

"Their bodies will remember, though. Their health will remember."

Not necessarity Leoni, if they then in the future live unhealthy lifestyles and put crap in their bodies, would couteract all the benefts of breastfeeding dont you think!

Yes you can be proud of what you achieved and be happy about it in a humble and dignified manner, which is not what is going on here I am afraid. Making others look bad to put yourself up is not the way to do it.
