To expect Aptamil NOT to contain fish!

I'm not veggie (luckily!) but just noticed this on the carton. Do all infant formulas contain fish oil? Bizarre

this is on the aptamil site "Babies need a diet high in beneficial fats, as these are their main source of energy. A baby?s brain, which is around 60% fat, uses nearly three quarters of total dietary energy for growth, whereas an adult's uses only a fifth. Once your baby is born, they?ll get a lot of essential fats from your breastmilk, which contains over 50% of its calories as fat." followed by "This group also includes LCPs - required for nervous system and brain development - which can be found in flaxseeds and fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring and sardines)." and then waheypresto, we've put them in our milk: "Aptamil First is nutritionally tailored with our unique blend of GOS/FOS prebiotics, special ingredients similar to those found in nature. It also contains nucleotides, antioxidants and long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPs). Since babies are unable to produce enough LCPs for their daily needs, we?ve included them in Aptamil First to ensure bottlefed babies aren?t missing out."

What they don't tell you is there is no evidence that their fatty acids do any good whatsoever...

aptamil is owned by numico who are mostly owned by danone. danone's only concern is making lots and lots of cash...

I don't think things are ever truly black and white.

Leonie, you are a nutty pop. Do be quiet. You antivax lot don't half spout some shite.

Anyway, someone said this:

"Its a shame that formula which is a lifeline for many is owned by these companies."

It's not a shame, it was inevitable. Formula was devised as a way to make money. If a baby couldn't be fed by its mother in the past, it would be wetnursed by a female relative or given some sort of other animal milk. Some survived, some didn't.

fwiw, I'd friggin' love to be a wetnurse. I have imagined the perfect set up, the night shift in a maternity ward, cake, tea, a nice magazine, my feet up, and every so often given a newborn to cuddle.

I am perhaps a little peculiar in that regard.

ZephirineDrouhin · 15/02/2011 22:00

There is evidence on this though.

I'd go for the fish personally.

No Leonie, I haven't seen any claims that it is better than breastfeeding. The point is that the outcomes seem to be better than with unsupplemented formula. And as we know, not everyone can breastfeed.

mrsgordonfreeman · 16/02/2011 10:16

You mentioned it. It seems relevant to you. And it means I cannot take anything else you say as valid.

morning I wish there was a 'like' button on here Grin

slowangels1 · 16/02/2011 13:23

Interesting. When I was at uni I was taught some baby milks had DHA in (an essential fatty acid that fish oils = good source) and others didn't, and that it was thought to be important for (I think) brain development so buying one with DHA in for babies was a good move.

Could be that now they've all moved over to using fish oils to give babies the DHA they need and fish is the best/easiest/cheapest source Hmm. Just a guess...

natto · 16/02/2011 13:38

Hipp formula was definitely vegetarian a few years ago, I chose it for this reason. Although I'd use a formula containing fish if there was no other option, I do think it's a shame that there isn't a vegetarian formula available now.

bessie26 · 16/02/2011 17:40

natto i had a message from the vegetarian society a couple of years ago saying it would no longer be veggie. Afraid I can't remember why.

pigletmania · 16/02/2011 17:48

Morning runner lol, or use it as loo paper. No seriously though politics of breastfeeding is very interesting and insightful, I have a copy, it can be used by others to put mums down. I agree altinkum totally

pommedeterre · 16/02/2011 17:52

'anything less is abhorrent to me'

TO ME Leonie Delt.

We are not all you and that's fine. It's not abhorrent to us. It doesn't have to be. We can ff if we want and you can't stop us ner ner ner bloody ner ner.

pigletmania · 16/02/2011 18:19

I think that leoni sounds very bitter at her situation, and who can blame her, but its very sad that she cannot feel sympathy or empathy for others, and it certainly comes out in her posting style. Not all people who have children with SN feel the way she does, I know a few in RL, but each person is different in the way in which they handle it. I should have thought that having children with SN, Leoni would understand Altinkums situation.

No I dont know you, and nor do I claim to know you Leoni, I am just judging on what you write.

POSTS may not have much sympathy or empathy in them - i dont suffer fools and i dont think much of excuses. My point exactly!

pigletmania · 16/02/2011 18:48

The reasons why some women cannot bf are quite vaid and its insulting to call them excuses, you cannot compare your situation to others, its not like for like, you are different, they are differnt, just because you battled through it, does not mean all women can do so, that thinking is very narrow indeed.
