I'm not veggie (luckily!) but just noticed this on the carton. Do all infant formulas contain fish oil? Bizarre

Leoni its the way that you put your information across, it lacks empathy, understanding. There are some lovely bf experts that I have come accross on here that really do justice to support and promote bf, as well as having an understanding and empathy of the problems women face bf, and do not make women feel at all guilty if they have to resort to formula, that is the way to do it Leoni. Please tell me that you are not a bf counsellor or thinking of becoming one. If soya milk is the only milk a child is able to have than so be it. Its like medicine a means to an end.

Leoni not everything is black and white, there are shades of grey in between. I am sure that if you struggled with bf or had problems with it, that would would have more empathy and understanding. Donated milk is the ideal if a woman is not able to feed herself, but it has to be readily available on the same scale as formula and meet basic healthy and safety requirements. Its not easily accessible so for many women who are not able to bf formula is the only resort.

pigletmania · 15/02/2011 18:54

Well to become a bf counsellor you have to be empathetic and open minded really. I can see both sides where you and altinkum are coming from, fair dues to you Leoni you do have a hell of a lot on your plate. My dd 3.11 is seeing the paedritircian possible ASD, Dyspraxia and so its a bit tense at the moment.

FWIW when my DN was diagnosed with a cows milk protein allergy, the specialist said that it was best for him to have BM provided my SIL avoided all diary. (He also wanted her to avoid soya as a precaution). However he said that if she was not willing to do this then he would prescribe a special formula.

He said it was a very bad idea to give any child susceptible to allergies soya formula, because there was a high chance that they would develop a soya allergy as well. He said much better to have BM (or neocate etc) and then hopefully be able to tolerate soya later on when it wasn't the sole source of nutrition.

In the event SIL BF until 18 months so he didn't need to have formula - by then he could have oatley... but I know that this is not possible for everyone.

Because of this I don't really understand the point of soya formula - its widely recognised that it should only be used under medical supervision, yet in most cases, the specialists don't want to prescribe it. It strikes me that its cheaper than neocate for the NHS hence some doctors (mainly GPs worried about their budgets) trying that first and not worrying about whether the babies go on to develop allergies.

I'm not anti-formula at all - my son is currently drinking 3 bottles a day of the stuff (yes aptamil).

pigletmania · 15/02/2011 19:04

Well leoni have [buscuit] my point exactly! So then I would expect you Leoni to be more sympathetic, not exucses at all that is really horrible thing to say, and i really hope that a mums struggling to feed their baby or has struggled to feed and has to resort to formula does not read this, it might be the straw that breaks the camels back tbh. Feeding is only little bit of the whole of the childs life, no good bf is then you feed your child rubbish and the child then grows up to eat rubbish that counteracts all the goodness of breastfeeding.

No not everyone can and that is a very narrow way of thinking. For me i just had no milk to give. But then we can agree to disagree tbh. Sad at your situation, yes I am starting down that road, and we are trying to get dd statemented. I still have strong views on bf and do see all perspectives regarding that, but i think thats the best way to approach the subject.

Altinkum dont feel guilty please dont Smile, you do have to listen to the Drs as they are the medical experts and will know about your ds medical condition than anyone of us on here. If giving a soya formula is what he needs than so be it, I am sure that he will grow up to be as happy and thriving as your other DS

So Leonie it really is that black and white to you?
If a woman can't bf, she is failing her child?
Anything less is 'abhorrent'.
Words fail me.

Leonie you really do epitomise everything I dislike about these debates. Please keep your pseudo-science and crass opinions to yourself instead of peddling them as received wisdom.

Not everyone can bf for various reasons and formula is a decent substitute. If it contains fish oil and that benefits the baby's health then so be it.

Jeeez.
