I'm not veggie (luckily!) but just noticed this on the carton. Do all infant formulas contain fish oil? Bizarre

I could tell just by reading the headline what direction this thread would take Hmm

QuestionNumber · 11/02/2011 21:51

YABU

Coca · 11/02/2011 21:52

I don't think it has taken a particular direction

TimeWasting · 11/02/2011 21:52

Dairy industry causes the death of cows, so vegginess a moot point.

Soya is much worse than fish though.

Are the fish oils harmful?

twirlymum · 11/02/2011 21:55

Oops, cross posted with others. Seems back on track now!

Millie1206 · 11/02/2011 21:58

I purposefully didn't say I am only just stopping breastfeeding now DS is 1 and am using up my old stocks of aptamil follow on that he has in his porridge. Didn't want this to turn into a bf vs ff debate so please don't let it. Was just shocked that formula that claims to be closest to bm could contain this. They don't mention that on the ads do they?!

Fish oil is for the long chain polyunsaturates, its in most baby milks i imagine but back 10 yrs ago i chose to feed both my babies 'Farleys' as it had this in it and aids brain development. It was an issue for someone we knew who had a fish allergy and they couldn't come near the kids when being fed or afterwards.

NorthernComfort · 11/02/2011 22:01

seriously?! There isn't one formula that doesn't contain fish? I breastfed mine but I dunno what the hell I would've done if I couldn't...

TimeWasting · 11/02/2011 22:03

What's the problem with the fish?

Udderly · 11/02/2011 22:07

What's the problem with soya? (Genuine q)

carriedababi · 11/02/2011 22:07

don't they actually use fish eyes?

yuk

what wrong with soya?

TimeWasting · 11/02/2011 22:09

Soya screws up hormones, it's a xenoestrogen.

Coca · 11/02/2011 22:12

No problem with fish, people just recoil at the thought of fish with baby milk. It is used to benefit the milk it is not like they are adding it because it it cheap/a bulking agent whatever. They add it because there is huge competeition in the industry and they need to prove that thiers is somehow closer to breastmilk than the alternatives. A good thing surely if you can't feed?

carriedababi · 11/02/2011 22:15

really! i thought it was ment ot be really good for you

mil drinks about 10 cartoons a week

should i tell her?

soya milk that is

LadyThumb · 11/02/2011 22:16

My son was born lactose intolerant and HAD to have soya. It hasn't screwed up his hormones!!

NorthernComfort · 11/02/2011 22:18

the problem with fish is that I'm a vegetarian and have no intention of feeding animal products to my children until they are old enough to choose to consume them of their own free will.

MoonUnitAlpha · 11/02/2011 22:19

Cow milk is an animal product though surely?

splashyy · 11/02/2011 22:19

Yanbu

I am a veggie and I was horrified that when I started to combination feed my baby (due to her severe reflux - I would have loved to continue ebf but it wasn't viable) there was no veggie formula available.

Yes omega is extracted from fish but it can equally be extracted from algae - the only reason formula doesn't contain veggie omega is because its more expensive. Same with whey - which contains beef in formula - but can be veggie.

As previously mentioned SMA wysoy is the only vegetarian society approved milk, but SMA hungry baby and stage 2 formula are also veggie.

I give my dd formula imported from Israel as kosher formula is vegetarian but I do wish there was a UK veggie brand - after all there are a lot of veggies in the UK! We aren't that small a minority.

Coca · 11/02/2011 22:19

So why would you be using a cows' milk product in the first place?

TimeWasting · 11/02/2011 22:21

The dairy industry kills as many cows as the beef industry.

carriedababi · 11/02/2011 22:21

so it is actually fish eyes then?

Coca · 11/02/2011 22:21

x post with Moon, directed at Northern

Udderly · 11/02/2011 22:22

I never knew that and would have lumped soya into the healthfood category. My absolutely useless accupuncturist had me eating soya beans to treat recurrent miscarriage!!!

strawberrycake · 11/02/2011 22:22

Even Neocate/ Nutramigen (hypo-allergenic milks) contain LCP, so I really doubt there's an allergy risk. DS could paper Buckingham place with poo if fed fish but he's fine on Neocate LCP.

TimeWasting · 11/02/2011 22:26

Udderly, there may be benefits in taking it if you have low levels of oestrogen, same as using it to treat menopausal symptoms, but it's bad for babies.
