I'm not veggie (luckily!) but just noticed this on the carton. Do all infant formulas contain fish oil? Bizarre

yep, i believe they do.
hipp organic used to be ok, but i have a funny feeling they put it in as well now

BuzzLiteBeer · 11/02/2011 20:19

S'for the omega oils or some shite. Isn't that standard now?

Coca · 11/02/2011 20:20

Its how they get the LCPs

onimolap · 11/02/2011 20:20

Isn't it one of the "build a better baby" add-ons, for the omega oils?

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 11/02/2011 20:21

Yeah they all do now. I don't think even the soya formulas are veggie anymore.

Millie1206 · 11/02/2011 20:25

Gosh seems it's just me didn't know that then?! Surely there must be some upset veggie mummies out there though because of this. It's follow on milk I saw it on, do the no 1 & 2 milks contain it, seems a bit naughty from an allergen pov

OP posts:
QueenOfFlamingEverything · 11/02/2011 20:30

Fairly sure all formula milks have it now - once one company adds an ingredient the rest usually follow.

Coca · 11/02/2011 20:34

By the time they have used it to create the LCPs it is not an allergen afaik

MoonUnitAlpha · 11/02/2011 20:36

It's pretty grim isn't it? I'm not sure there's even much proof for these things being beneficial for the baby.

SMA is the worst for smelling really fishy too.

MotherofHobbit · 11/02/2011 20:45

They've all got it now

I think the only veggie formula is SMA Wysoy. It's no longer possible to get a non-soya veggie formula.

SecretNutellaFix · 11/02/2011 20:46

I'm intrigued by this thread and have gone to Hipp and their baby milk page.

It looks like the ready to feed stuff is different to the powder formula.

here

Loshad · 11/02/2011 20:47

the solution is fairly simple though Hmm

Coca · 11/02/2011 20:49

I think most ready to feed formulas don't contain the fish oils.

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 11/02/2011 20:51

I'm vegetarian (have been for 20 odd years).

I also BF so this is a moot point really.

But if I were in a position where I had to use formula I would choose the fish over the soya every time.

Iggly · 11/02/2011 21:16

Well formula is pretty heavily processed so no surprise really.

Missedagain · 11/02/2011 21:21

agreee with you i was HORRIFIED and freecycled mine

gizzy1973 · 11/02/2011 21:25

cow and gate comfort either contains a lot less or none as we looked at ingredients when switching last year as lo was very sicky

StrikeUpTheBand · 11/02/2011 21:29

Loshad, I hope I am wrong, but what is your solution?

Loshad · 11/02/2011 21:34

breast feed - it's not rocket science but do people honestly think formula milk is all healthy and great [puzzled]

MoonUnitAlpha · 11/02/2011 21:35

I don't think formula is healthy and great, I think it's an adequate breastmilk substitute that could be better.

Coca · 11/02/2011 21:36

Please don't start this. It helps no one

MoonUnitAlpha · 11/02/2011 21:37

Plus, when breastmilk isn't available it's better than pap, carnation milk or starvation Hmm

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 11/02/2011 21:38

Loshad Biscuit

There's always one isn't there? fgs.

Formula is healthy compared to the old alternatives to breastmilk.

If breastmilk is not available then what do you suggest we feed our babies?

loubielou31 · 11/02/2011 21:44

I had noticed that Aptamil contained fish it has done for at least three years because I saw it on the pack when DD1 was a baby, had to tell a friend with a bad fish allergy to check the boxes very carefully before buying any formula. Now I don't know if that is likely to be a problem for the baby but it could have been for her i suppose.

Coca · 11/02/2011 21:49

They have to put conatins fish by law but it really is so far removed from fish that it shouldn't be a proplem for her. Always worth checking with the company in her situation though.
