To expect Aptamil NOT to contain fish!

I'm not veggie (luckily!) but just noticed this on the carton. Do all infant formulas contain fish oil? Bizarre

I'm a vegetarian, not a vegan and as I said, I breastfed but if I hadn't been able to I would have been seriously gutted if there were no veggie alternatives.

TimeWasting · 11/02/2011 22:29

Dairy causes the death of cows.

NorthernComfort · 11/02/2011 22:34

what's your problem with vegetarians?

As regards soya, the Japanese consume what, 4 times more soya than we do and it seems to be doing them more good than harm.

Afaik, the majority of soya consumed in the east is fermented in one way or another. Western uses for soya don't include that.

My only problem with vegetarianism is that it doesn't appear to me to be logical as a moral argument. It's ok for something to die for your food as long as you don't eat it?

splashyy · 11/02/2011 22:42

Soya has both health benefits and negatives. It reduces cholestrol. It also can impair male fertility.

For babies giving soya formula reduces the risk of allergy.

timewasting are you vegan? If not then what is your problem?

Many people, like me, choose not to consume meat because of concerns over animal welfare (as well as other reasons) but find a vegan diet too restrictive. I tried being vegan but couldn't stay healthy. I do what I can.

Millie1206 · 11/02/2011 22:44

Im intrigued about dairy causing the death of cows but fear I will get shot down for my ignorance!

I don't have a problem with fish at all, in fact DS and zI have loads of fish, I think it's very healthy. I was just shocked to find out it was an ingredient of formula and even more shocked to find out it is and has been an ingredient in almost all formula milks for a long time.

I work in the food industry and am pretty well versed on allergens and what is acceptable or misleading to a consumer. As a consumer, I feel misled that I didn't know this was in the product I'd been using. I know it's on the label and my own fault for not reading it but if I was a veggie or I had a fish allergy I would have assumed that formula was ok/ safe to use.

Just seems immoral to me.

carriedababi · 11/02/2011 22:45

oh i know someone who is v annoying, who claims to be veggie but eats fish and chicken

so really she just doesn't eat red meat!

splashyy · 11/02/2011 22:46

What is more illogical timewasting is to object to consuming dairy because 'its not ok for something to die for your food' but still eat meat and dairy. Try being a vegan first before you judge others!

Coca · 11/02/2011 22:46

Why is it immoral when it is on the packaging? It is your resposability to check

MoonUnitAlpha · 11/02/2011 22:46

Millie - the dairy industry produces lots of surplus male calves who are killed.

PaisleyLeaf · 11/02/2011 22:48

Soy's had a lot of bad press for a few years now.
I think I read that New Zealand and Canada want it taken away from the shelves and just given on prescription if needed.
Splashy, it's funny you should be getting your soy formula sent over from Israel, as their health agency do not recommend soy in infant formula.

Coca · 11/02/2011 22:49

Splashy I think you may be misinterpreting what she is saying

carriedababi · 11/02/2011 22:50

plShock

TimeWasting · 11/02/2011 22:52

I have been a vegan splashyy as a matter of fact.

TrillianAstra · 11/02/2011 22:53

I would fully expect it to contain fish-derived products if they had a benefit to the baby/child drinking it.

I'm sure there would be a market for special vegetarian formula, but for all non-vegetarians who have to or choose to use formula the preference surely is to say yes to animal products if they make it better able to meet the baby's nutritional requirements.

NorthernComfort · 11/02/2011 22:54

Timewasting- how can you ask what the problem is with fish but be so bothered by dairy?

I have several reasons for being vegetarian, some moral, some spiritual. I'm always astonished by how threatened this makes some people feel; what's the problem if some of us choose not to consume something? Why the compulsion to try to question/reason someone out of their choices?

autodidact · 11/02/2011 22:55

12345 once I caught a fish alive
678910 then I threw it back again
Why did you let him go
Because he bit my finger so
so I grabbed him by the gill
And mushed him up for aptamil

Coca · 11/02/2011 22:55

Hurrah Trillian! Why couldn't I just man up and say that

PaisleyLeaf · 11/02/2011 22:56

Oh carrie, the prescription thing is for infant formula, not adults. I wrote that badly.

TimeWasting · 11/02/2011 22:58

I just don't differentiate between animal products.
The fish has probably lived a free and happy life, whereas the cow has most certainly not.

Socrates made me do it.

Altinkum, according to Gabrielle Palmer, soya isn't even advised for lactose intolerant babies, and that UK government scientists recommend a hydrolysed cows milk formula. Of course there might be babies for whom even that isn't suitable, which is why soya based formula should still be available on prescription of course.

I asked what the problem with fish oil was from a health perspective and no one has mentioned any.

NorthernComfort · 11/02/2011 23:05

but there is virtually no ethical way you can eat fish these days. Sure the fish is over the moon about being hunted to the point of near extinction. Hmm

PaisleyLeaf · 11/02/2011 23:07

I expect that some soya in our diets is fine.
But for a baby who's diet is solely the milk, it's a lot of soya isn't it?
