I'm not veggie (luckily!) but just noticed this on the carton. Do all infant formulas contain fish oil? Bizarre

But don't the Asian women eat in the fermented form?

TimeWasting · 11/02/2011 23:33

NC, thank you. Smile

TheButterflyCollector · 11/02/2011 23:35

Ha, I'd read of that some age ago, altinkum, thank you for finding it and reminding me.

So it begs the question as to why we should be concerned about FF babies receiving soya milk based formula instead of cows milk and fish based formula, surely?

splashyy · 11/02/2011 23:37

paisleyleaf I get cows milk based formula from Israel, but the same company also produces soya formula, so yes soya based formula is definitely available in Israel.

timewaisting If you are vegan then surely we have common ground? :) As I said previously I would like to be vegan but cannot. I don't understand why vegans have such disdain for vegetarians.

And there are also claims that soy may encourage and accelerate the growth of breast tumours.

It'll be good when they make up their minds.

TimeWasting · 11/02/2011 23:41

I'm not currently a vegan splashyy, but I have been.

Butterfly, I don't think that does beg the question as it's a study of adult women, not babies being fed non-milk milk.

PaisleyLeaf · 11/02/2011 23:42

splashy, it is available. It's just the health authority have warned against it.

Granted, TimeWasting, but nonetheless I'd be interested to see comparative studies.

Taking another angle on the soya FF debate, there are many things which are not recommended or which are unconventional surrounding pegnant women and babies, from FF itself, eating soft cheese in pregnancy to raising a child as a vegetarian from day one. I managed all of these without issue. It makes me wonder how many other women have achieved one or more without a problem and exactly how great, or perhaps more to the point how small, the associated risks are.

TimeWasting · 11/02/2011 23:54

I've heard it put that you can't quantify the risk to any single individual, as it's not possible to take into account genetics etc. but when looked at on a population level it's possible to see what effect FF for instance has.

"the breastfeeding reduces cancer study, it may reduce cancer if cancer is already present in the family genes not reduce it for every single woman who breastfeeds."Shock

Interesting use of stats isn't it, altinkum, when you bear in mind that only about 5% or less breast cancers are genetic. The selective use of facts and figures by the powers that be is something which never fails to anger me.

TimeWasting · 12/02/2011 00:06

They presume we won't understand the difference.

I think that's thing, like in says in that vegetarian link - moderation.

TBC if you were interested in looking into it more someone called Kaayla Daniel phd has written 'The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food'.
www.naturalnews.com/022224.html

And this looks like something re warnings on the packaging of soy foods in France it says about increased breast cancer risk lower down: it's a pdf thingie

TimeWasting · 12/02/2011 00:09

It's not just genetic cancers.

PaisleyLeaf · 12/02/2011 00:11

It's big business though isn't it?
