"To think people with mental health issues should be locked up?"

I don't get why they closed the asylums, now we have all these unstable lunatics wandering round the streets. There is one living near me so I can't even let the dc play out in case she kidnaps them and locks them in her cellar. I think they should start some kind of loony register to keep tabs on them and then they can notify residents when one moved into the area!

They are quite young curious.

I think because people know I've been in hospital they imagine I must have been dangerous or something. I don't get it tbh.

I use to work at the school as a TA, can you imagine their faces if i went back there to work, might do it just to annoy them!

Snap fish you poor bugger!, I'm hoping your getting the right support from your loved ones, their the ones that really matter.

I have had PTSD following ds's birth, my health visitor tried to say I was depressed and basically marched me down to the dr's for some 'happy pills' Hmm

My dr was great she said I wasn't depressed but had a awful ordeal (both nearly died, ds several times Sad) and put me intouch with some counciling which has been a god send, this has worked for me, (I still have my up and down days but I think I'm getting there.

I hope you will too Smile

WildSheepChase · 04/02/2011 11:20

I have the school gates gossip to come (DS is 2.5) but it really really saddens me that you had to be a victim to that kind of mentality SnapFish. I've also received treatment in the past, on numerous occasions, including immediately after DS's birth (it's amazing whhat a PPH and anemia can do to trigger a collapse) and at no point did any professional even slightly intimate I would be a shit or dangerous parent as a result. I've been on AD's for 15 years and they've helped me to get two degrees, hold down a job, have a stable relationship and be a good Mother.

The parents who hold these attitudes are the reason people don't seek treatment or help. What selfish, inconsiderate, ignorant people they are. Angry

boohoohoo · 04/02/2011 11:26

Snapfish what a horrible thing to happen, its horrific that people still think like that these days.

SnapFish · 04/02/2011 11:27

Do you know what I am going to do it!! I wonder if they'll complain to school.

I do have some wonderful people around me. The people who really matter have been fantastic.

My DH has been diagnosed as bipolar and has been manic or depressed for most of the last two years and in and out of hospital. So far we have been lucky enough not to face any prejudice at school, only support.

I am so sorry you have had to deal with this.

As the parent without serious MH problems I have been on a bit of a mission to explain the reality to other parents. Not really sure how it's going.... MH is such a taboo subject, but needs to be better understood.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 04/02/2011 11:37

snapfish, ignore those people. Hold your head up high.
I wasn't put in hospital as there wasn't the room, but I have been where you've been.
If you ever need a chat, inbox me.

Snapfish - if you ask MNHQ to reword your post, can I suggest that you have it put in quote marks and another line underneath it saying that you have had this said to you in RL? It's going to cause no end of confusion if you change the wording completely.

Am very sorry to hear that you have been exposed to such smallminded bigotry - nasty people who probably don't think twice about their own behaviour as parents but are all too happy to bitch about anyone else, especially anyone whose experience is outside of their understanding. Ignoring them is the best way forward - but I do think that getting your TA job back would be a fantastic way to "stick it to them", as it would show that the school think you are fine!

itsalarf · 04/02/2011 19:22

Mental health issues are the cruellest in many ways. Not only are people feeling as bad as it is possible to feel, but they often get no sympathy or understanding either. The good thing about your first post Snapfish is that you can see how very genuinely angry the posters all are, which restores some faith in parts of society.

pigletmania · 04/02/2011 19:23

Its a Friday night troll I am sure, not going to get sucked in.

pigletmania · 04/02/2011 19:25

Oh no Snapfish just read some of your posts sorry, just read your op and felt a bit Angry

pigletmania · 04/02/2011 19:29

I think that there is still a stigma surrounding mental health. I have had depression and PND and have been on AD in the past for it. I felt so bad about the way I felt towards my dd when she was a baby, one day something snapped and felt that i needed to go to my GP for help for my PND. It took me about 8 months to pluck up the courage, I admitted to him everything, he was very understanding. I seriously thought that he would call SS to take dd away and that is why I was scared. DD is now nearly 4 and everything is so much different in a better way.

Piglet read the full post.

Hi snapfish - another "mentalist" here, and married to a manic depressive too.

Wow to your schoolmate "friends" we are probably like the family from the Texas chainsaw massacre!

Infact we are both high income career people with a fantastic son who is thriving in international school. The most havoc I wreck is on a calculator!

Make my Wine glass one full to the brim with citalopram please and let's raise our glass to prejudiced fuck wits!
