To not know what to think of Mediums

DH comes from a family of mediums and I don't quite know what to make of it!

When I met DH and found out about it I was a bit Hmm but I fell in love with him anyway. We have since married and had a baby together. DH is pretty low key about the whole thing but his Father, Sister and Brother are all mediums too.

My thoughts on Mediums have always been that either they are lying, deluded or maybe, possibly telling the truth (but have never really believed IYKWIM).

I think DFIL is both deluded and a massive attention seeker so he fits into my previous thoughts on mediums. However I adore DH, have massive respect for DSIL and I know that my DBIL hates the whole scene but claims that "they" won't leave him alone and is desperate to make them go away!

My mind boggles about the whole thing and they are convinces that it is really happening to them. Is it? I don't know!!

AIBU to be a bit Hmm about this part of my DH's life?

Have they ever given you any messages from 'the other side'?

marmynags · 03/02/2011 16:00

ask for the lottery numbers

Skeptical · 03/02/2011 16:00

Yeah his Dad has given me a reading - some of it was spot on, a lot of it was just generic guessing I think. However DH often comes out with things that has been "given" to him and is usually accurate. I think he holds a lot back becasue he knows how sceptical I am.

Mediums are either lying or deluded.

The deluded ones at least have an excuse, but the ones who KNOW they're talking bollocks and yet STILL take money from bereaved people should be shot.

MrsBethel · 03/02/2011 16:38

"ask for the lottery numbers"

Grin Ha ha.

FabbyChic · 03/02/2011 16:39

Not only the bereaved go to Mediums, those with emotional, financially problems go to them too.

Some people live their lives by what a medium tells them.

aurorastargazer · 03/02/2011 16:39

fwiw i gave someone who used to be a good friend a rather long message, all of it was accurate to the extent she went white and now we no longer talk. like in all walks of life, there are some good mediums and some charlatans - and it's the charlatans who get the bad press and get the rest of us tarred with the same brush.

cestlavie · 03/02/2011 16:40

It's a little like religion really!

Arguably religious believers are lying or deluded but their partners seem to tolerate them...

[said only slightly tongue in cheek]

FlamingoBingo · 03/02/2011 16:40

Derren Brown's done quite a good job at showing what fakes mediums are.

aurorastargazer · 03/02/2011 16:42

it is through what i have experienced throughout life that i have my beliefs. however, i respect other people's opinions and have no wish at all to force my own upon others Smile

Lamorna · 03/02/2011 16:43

I think that some people have a 'sixth sense', however I should keep well away from that side, best not to delve. It will be interesting to see if your DC has a psychic side, if they really do have experiences that most people don't have then you may find DC has the same.

DooinMeCleanin · 03/02/2011 16:43

My sister says she is a medium. Like you I am not 100% sure what to think of this. But she is frighteningly accurate in what she says to people (when she passes messages on, she often keeps shut incase people think she has lost the plot)

I believe that she believe it, she has nothing to gain from lying to me. I know she knows she knows things she cannot possibly know, I don't understand how she knows these things.

valiumredhead · 03/02/2011 16:44

My feelings on mediums tend to be along the same lines as Derren Brown's!

CalamityKate · 03/02/2011 16:44

How odd that the charlatans are completely indistinguishable from the "genuine" ones Aurora

How odd that whenever they are tested properly, they ALL turn out to be charlatans!

Lamorna · 03/02/2011 16:45

If your DC starts telling you about things that she 'sees' when she is about 3/4yrs, you will know that they do have a psychic sense.

Malificence · 03/02/2011 16:45

My head would say that it's all rubbish, however, my sister saw one and she was so accurate it is hard to see how it was guesswork.
For example, she told my sister than our mother had 4 children but had only given birth to 3, I was adopted as a baby , my bio mum and adopted mum were sisters. That's a bit too random and detailed for my liking.
She also told her our dad was very, very sorry for what he'd done - he'd remarried to an awful woman a few years after our mum died.
She also knew that my sister has 3 china hedgehogs that were mums.

Now I don't know what to think tbh.

CalamityKate · 03/02/2011 16:46

If your DC starts telling you about things that she "sees" when she is about 3/4 years, then you will know that like most small children, she has a vivid imagination and often, genuinely, cannot distinguish imaginary things from real ones.

valiumredhead · 03/02/2011 16:47

OMG Calamity I was thinking about you when I typed out my post! I must be psychic! Grin

LetThereBeRock · 03/02/2011 16:48

It's utter nonsense. So called mediums/psychics are indeed either deluded or lying.

Skeptical · 03/02/2011 16:51

But I don't believe my DH is deluded or lying to me. This is the problem I am faced with! I don't believe in mediums but i do believe in my DH, it pickles my brain to think about it.

OP posts:
proton · 03/02/2011 16:52

i think it depends on who is doing the reading but i do believe that there are a few (rare) people out there with a gift, i have witnessed it.

DooinMeCleanin · 03/02/2011 16:54

I don't know. Some of the things my sister came out when she was young couldn't have been an overactive imagination. She knew things she couldn't possibly have known. She still does know things she cannot possibly know.

I know that much is true. Whether she is getting messages from the dead or not I don't know. She certainly thinks she is.

valiumredhead · 03/02/2011 16:54

I have no doubt that some mediums think they have a genuine gift, it doesn't mean they have though.

Who is the bloke that offered a million to anyone who can prove themselves a medium? ( Randall?)

TrillianAstra · 03/02/2011 16:54

Either lying or deluded.

LetThereBeRock · 03/02/2011 16:55

Sorry but it really is a load of bollocks. And people can delude themselves into believing that they truly have such powers.
